Welcome to the official Shariah Program TH-cam channel!
I’m Yusuf Mullan, and I’ve been teaching classical Arabic and tafsir online since 2004, helping thousands of students around the globe.
In tafsir, I focus on uncovering the rational arguments embedded in the Qur’an, conveyed through its miraculous language. By highlighting these proofs, which astonished the pre-Islamic Arabs, we deepen our connection to the Qur’an and uncover what truly moved those who first heard its message. Without this focus, we risk missing the profound beauty and power that led even the Mushriks to prostrate upon hearing Surah an-Najm’s closing verses.
For Arabic learners, we offer a unique approach to mastering the language by understanding its structure and logic (combined with frequent reading) rather than wasting precious time memorizing endless vocabulary lists.
Engage with the material and share your thoughts in the comments. Your feedback helps us grow and refine our content, inshaAllah.

The Qur'anic Argument for God You Learned When You Were 2
Thank you shaikh Love this very logical and systematic explanation. Just one question. In surah Al-Fatihah ayah 7 following صرات is الذي . Is صرات maintained definite by it already being a mudhof in ayat 6?
You're most welcome. May Allah reward you for your support!
In surah Al-Fatiha it’s being used differently. Siraat is not mausuf. It’s mudhaf to the allatheena word. Path of those on whom…
MashaAllah incredibly detailed and motivating. I love how you mention that this is not for someone cold off the street, but that you teach this in week 4 of the main program. Week 4!! And students are completely ready to receive this content by then, Alhamdulilah. Many other programs are still doing very basic 2 word sentences at week 4 and don't even attempt these more detailed topics.
Absolutely!! I’ve been watching stuff from other TH-camrs that do go into detail as well. May Allah grant success to everyone who’s trying to make it easy to access the Arabic language. Since those audiences will generally be at a level comparable to an average week 4 Shariah Program (or could quickly get there through the free workshop), it lets me speak with confidence without having to water everything down which is so awkward. Future videos will be even more detailed. InshaAllah.
*FREE 3-hour workshop reveals the exact concepts I’ve used to help thousands begin reading Arabic with understanding in just 21 days:* arabic.lpages.co/leadbox/
Now how would you apply this in doing tarkeeb of ayaat of the Quran...for example ياسين والقران الحكيم انك لمن المرسلين على صراط مستقيم تنزيل العزيز الرحيم لتنذر قوما ما انظر ابائهم فهم غافلون It seems you can have huge a paragraph to break down rather than one simple sentence and then the individual sentences within that paragraph.
We’d ditch step #1 altogether as that’s for extreme beginners and we’d bring in a new step #1 which is figuring out where the sentence starts and ends, paying particular attention to parenthetical sentences and “nested structures”, prepositional phrases and the verbs/verb-like-entities that they connect to. Once the start and end point has been established, you’d proceed to distribute the words into “boxes” and keep zooming in until every word has been accounted for. The sequence of verses you quoted are fairly complex. The tanzeel al-Azeez al-Raheem part is actually a complete parenthetical sentence made up of an omitted verb, omitted faa’il and what the grammarians call a maf’ul mutlaq (3 major portions). So that would be dealt with first. Next, litundhira is associated to “being among the messengers” so it would be part of THAT sentence. There are other elements (like qasm and jawab al-qasam) also that would need to be accounted for, after which the parsing can be done. The point is the process can be applied to any sentence once you’ve figured out where it begins and where it ends. However, the amount of background grammar may be lacking depending on how complex the sentence is. This is why in the classes, when doing this, we never do it for every sentence. We pick and choose sentences that are just complex enough so they can reinforce already learned grammar and introduce one or two new elements so the whole exercise remains productive and not overwhelming. Hope that helps.
Thank you that's excellent. Something else came to mind... Modes of recitation... Tanzeel can be mansoob lafzan ... Would it relate to the harf ta'keed earlier in the sentence (inna) And then if you recite it tanzeelul in marfoo lafz... Connected to the word Qur'an earlier in the sentence possibly?
That's where looking into tafsir books like al-Baydhawi and its hawaashi would be helpful. They almost always talk about what you mentioned. The nasb qiraa'ah is maf'ul mutlaq for an omitted verb so it's unrelated to the inna. I don't know if there's a raf' qiraa'ah (I'm not a Qari), but if there is one, it would be khabr for an omitted mubtada.. either way, it's a parenthetical sentence (jumlah mu'taridha) The word Quran at the beginning is in jarr because of the waw of qasm that's attached to it.. so it can't have anything "connect" to it. Go through the 3-hour workshop linked to in the description even though you're fairly advanced. I think you'll find it valuable.
جزاكم الله خيرا كثيرا Thank you so much for the knowledge
Waiyyakum! You’re very welcome. Plan is to make *a lot* more inshaAllah over the coming days.
Thank you so much for this video!
You are so welcome!
For someone who's done nahw meer this is brilliant to understand how to apply it when going through sharh miatu aamil
Jazakallah khairan for commenting and offering your take. I would add to that, that this approach should be incorporated much earlier during Qasas classes which are generally taught alongside Nahw meer and not after. It all depends on not trying to do tarkeeb of every sentence and just selected ones. I’ll be making many more videos inshaAllah over the coming days applying the 4-step formula to increasingly complex sentences.
Outstanding. I’ve studied these in your online course but this is a good summary video. JZK
Waiyyakum! Thanks for chiming in and letting people know. I’m literally showing people and some are still skeptical on whether we’re for real or not.
JazakAllah khair! This video was intensely motivating and also fun to watch! MashaAllah its so exciting to have access to these classical sciences and classical scholars through your teaching. Its clear that this approach is not some random shortcut way of learning the language, but rather its grounded in a tradition that produced thousands of scholars of the Arabic language and Islamic sciences.

@shariahprogram Jazaakaallahu khairan katheera
Jazakullah Khairan, I really benefited from this.
Waiyyakum! Glad you found it helpful. Alhamdulillah.
May Allah reward you for your efforts. But I think this is very confusing way of teaching and not a good approach for beginners. Sometimes you need to know your audience and rather than speaking to someone on your level you need to speak to someone as though they know nothing.
To the contrary, it’s really the ONLY way to teach beginners successfully. But you have to go through the 3 hours of preparatory study linked to in the description first. I mentioned this within the first 90 seconds and then further down in the presentation. Were you able to watch it fully? Again, to someone truly cold off the street, you can’t speak this way! I would suggest following the link in the pinned comment and going through that material to really see for yourself the power of this approach.
You are correct. Sadly many darululoom graduates do not have any understanding of how to teach languages. They forget they have been drilling this day and night often without comprehension until the later years. This approach doesn’t work with people who have don’t want to join a darululoom due to commitments. The best method of learning is ‘immersion’ method.
I bear witness that this teacher method is the best as a former student I studied with him for six years and now l can read and understand most of the classics, quran and hadiths
@TheSaf7uk. Absolute nonsense. Give your head a shake. I’m literally PROVING to you right here and now that this is the approach for the masses. You’re posting as if you’re responding to promises and not actual teaching. See the response I gave to the earlier comment. You need to watch the 3 hours to appreciate the material in this video. Many are able to grasp the concepts even without the 3 hours. Seriously, though. At least watch the videos before giving your opinion.
@@shariahprogram unfortunately most linguists with disagree with you. They accept that students do not learn like this. It’s a poor and lazy method of teaching. If you had any research in language acquisition you would understand your methodology is actually counterintuitive.
This video is the perfect explanation of why learning vocabulary by itself can’t help you understand a sentence in Arabic. It’s a huge jump for anyone trying to get from memorizing simple words to understanding full sentences and paragraphs. Actually it’s almost shocking that this is even a free video - there is so much more value here than long playlists with random Arabic rules.
You’re absolutely right. People just don’t get it. This is why I’m just trying to show people straight up. More videos to come. InshaAllah.

Also this video on the three parts of speech would be really helpful for you IMO. It takes the parts of speech in Arabic and maps them onto the English ones and speaks more about prepositions in particular. Here’s the link: th-cam.com/video/scFspc44WGY/w-d-xo.html
Sura 2 173. Your allah said that pork blood carrion are haram but not when compelled by necessity. What does it mean?
It means if one is dying of starvation, and the only thing available is these items, one must eat and save their life. This is well known.
@shariahprogram if you are dying of starvation, what will you eat......pork or blood or carrion? Then what will your allah do? Will he increase your good deeds?
Whichever of these 3 is available, I’d eat the minimum amount that would prevent me from dying of starvation. And yes, I’d do it expecting to be rewarded. If all 3 are available, I’d eat the fattiest meat from the carrion or I’d assess the situation and use my best judgment. If I got it wrong and didn’t consume the most optimal option, Allah would forgive me. I also have evidence that the One True God - that I can prove separately exists and is not only my God but yours as well - has ordered me to do this and the reward is also real. None of this is taken on faith. I appreciate you’re coming here and engaging with me in the comments.
@@shariahprogram you will eat pork blood carrion etc in that situation... Then what is the problem to your allah if you eat them in normal situations?
If you're asking what need is He trying to remove from Himself by commanding me to not eat it in under normal situations, the answer is obvious. He doesn't have a need. It's impossible for Him to have a need. All I know is He exists based on clear incontrovertible evidence, and secondly he has commanded me and if I disobey, I make myself susceptible to being harmed. So the rational thing for me to do is adhere. Plus, He's promised me that I'll be rewarded when I obey. Pretty straight forward if you ask me. It also just so happens that these things are harmful for me (physically and spiritually). But even if they weren't I'd still obey and refrain from them.

I remember this being one of the key explanations that accelerated my ability to start reading and understanding an Arabic book. It was a like a light-bulb moment even. The distinction between words that indicate a meaning in themselves vs. in something else really clicked for me.
Jazakallah khairan for highlighting this. It would be the point made from around the 07:30 mark of the video. Indicating a meaning in itself vs in something else.

Atheist here. The very first step to have any conversation with Christians or Atheist is to first understand their claims. The Christians claims that their triune God is transcendent and not contingent.
Welcome 🤗 That’s false because Jesus was a material thing. Being material and transcendence/non-contingency is contradictory. You can’t say that! I mean, you can (people can say anything), but you can’t say it legitimately. I’d suggest rewatching the part within the video that contrasts between the 2 worldviews. Btw, the Christian worldview has more in common with the atheist one (not explicitly addressed in the video) than with the Islamic one. They both agree that the laws of nature are real. Muslims disagree and say, they’re merely regular associations that God upholds. Christians and Atheists differ in supernaturalism. The topic is complex but I think the video explains it well. At any rate, thanks for commenting and engaging.
@@shariahprogram Let me ask you this: "Where did you got the idea that Jesus was immaterial?' Did you ask any Christian about the material or immaterial aspect of Jesus? Most probably you hadn't asked them, instead got the idea from Muslims only. Cause any Christian worth the salt, would have point you to John chapter 1, verse 1 to 3: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. " This points to an immaterial, and timeless entity, that is not "material" at all
The Bible contains elements of original truth. So of course both Jews and Christians believed in exactly the same Necessary Being God that Muslims believe in. Jews still believe this so our issue with them wouldn’t be this. Now, saying “God became incarnate of the Virgin Mary” (which every Christian denomination adheres to), disqualifies them from appealing to the transcendent conception of God that’s there within their scriptures even though those scriptures have been corrupted and changed by the hands of men. So no. It’s not Muslims that say this. It’s in their creed. Also, it’s common knowledge that the biggest proof for the divinity of Christ they present is that he performed miracles. I addressed that in the video. Did you watch the video to properly understand our perspective. If not, maybe do that now.
@@shariahprogram Please read the Nicene Creed properly. It does NOT state: “God became incarnate of the Virgin Mary”. It actually states: .."and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary,". Do you think they are both the same? Also please take time to read the entire creed, which talks about Jesus being: ", of one substance with the Father". How can you miss that?
Reading it more carefully reveals MORE contingency. How can you miss that? A thing is contingent when it could have been some other way. Every contingent thing needs something else to make it the way that it is. Again, the specifics of their creed doesn’t remove contingency. It amplifies it through the roof. I mean, seriously, dude. If you want to debate the complete contingency argument that incontrovertibly proves that the God of the Quran exists, we can do that. Let me know and I’ll state the premises and we can have a discussion.
I agree with Nouman Ali. Christians handle conversations with atheists in a non confrontational way. I’ve seen many Muslim drop them just because they don’t understand. So Nouman Ali is correct.
From that perspective, I would agree as well. 99% of online Dawah people who debate Atheists are completely clueless. They don’t know the arguments I’m advocating for in this video so they resort to dogmatism themselves. It’s a mess. That’s not the topic of this video though. If he was encouraging people to speak with atheists calmly, that’s another matter. The issue is he doesn’t understand the worldview distinction I made in the video. From what I saw, he thinks since Christians also believe in God, Muslims should make use of Christian arguments when debating with atheists. This is better than studying and using “kalam proofs”.
You’re absolutely right, and it all comes down to one crucial factor: knowledge. When Muslims engage in discussions with atheists or others, the effectiveness of their approach is directly tied to how well they understand their own beliefs and how skilfully they communicate them. The issue isn’t that Christians inherently handle these conversations better-it’s that many Muslims who enter these discussions aren’t properly equipped. The majority of debates, particularly online, are carried out by well-meaning Muslims who simply don’t have the depth of knowledge or the training to address complex questions effectively. This often leads to weak arguments and missed opportunities to present the truth. For example, I once saw a Muslim respond to a challenging question with a simple statement: “Because that’s what we believe.” While this might be an internally valid answer for the believer, it’s meaningless to someone outside the faith. Such responses leave room for doubt and, worse, can even invite ridicule, not because Islam lacks answers but because the answers were poorly delivered. Now imagine a Muslim who is thoroughly grounded in their knowledge and understands how to communicate effectively. They wouldn’t rely on weak assertions or defensive arguments. Instead, they would approach the conversation with calm confidence, using logic, reason, and universal principles to engage the other person. This isn’t about proving someone wrong or winning an argument-it’s about presenting ideas in a way that resonates with the human mind and heart. Muslims have every tool they need to excel in these discussions. Islam’s principles and teachings align naturally with rational thinking and universal truths. When presented with clarity, they speak to something innate in every person. The key is preparation-studying not just the core beliefs of Islam but also understanding the perspective of those you’re speaking to. A skilled and knowledgeable Muslim can dismantle misconceptions, answer questions with wisdom, and inspire genuine curiosity about the faith. Ultimately, it’s not about who does better by default-it’s about who comes to the conversation prepared. A Christian may handle an exchange better because they’ve spent time learning how to communicate their ideas effectively, but a well-prepared Muslim has the advantage of presenting something that is inherently logical, grounded, and universal. The difference isn’t in the message itself-it’s in how well it’s delivered. And when Muslims rise to that challenge, they have the potential to excel in every conversation.
Subhan Allah . The presentation is quite helpful . Lots of information . Need to listen more than ones to understand it . Please do not speak too fast .
Alhamdulillah. Glad you found it helpful and beneficial.
I have absolutely no issues sharing these Arabic tutorials. In my opinion they are by far the best way to learn Qur'anic Arabic.
Thanks for sharing! Jazakallah khairan
The distinction you make between the Islamic concept of a necessary being and the contingent gods of other religions is so important. It's a solid reminder that we need to base our arguments on firm, consistent principles rather than relying on gaps or weaknesses in other beliefs. JazakAllah for another thought-provoking video.
You said it really well, MashaAllah. “Relying on gaps and weaknesses in other beliefs”. I’ll definitely be using that.
People like this nauman have never read the works of ibn asakir and at-tahawi, or maturidi and ashari. They buy a camera and a mic and cause more damage by using weak irrational proofs and cause firestorm of doubts in the younger generation in the west.
Dude is extremely talented and brings huge multitudes of people closer to the Qur'an. May Allah reward him for all of that.. so this clip here of mine isn't meant to dismiss all of his great work. It's just this particular blunder cannot be overlooked. I mean, he should study Shaykh Hamza Karamali's "Why Islam is true" course himself a few times like I have.. then he wouldn't give out dangerous advice like this. I'm sure, he'd even enjoy it. In that same clip, he recommended the "why Islam is true" curse, but then gave the bad advice I spoke of within the same reply.
Vipul Patel talking about Islam??? Amazing!!! 😂
@@shariahprogram an example of plate of rice with a single poisoned kernel comes to mind. If 100 lectures are good but 1 lecture is poison, why should it be served to people seeking knowledge? Mistakes on online platforms has exponential consequences because reachable audience is global.
I don’t think anyone with a correct understanding of these matters would fall into doubts by watching his stuff.
@@shariahprogramhe likened the implementation of sharia to an aggressive controlling father implementing hijab on his daughters a few months ago. He also recently conducted a lecture in Belgium where a sister was reciting Quran directly to a congregation of men, which apparently is nothing to be concerned about. Some of his Quran stuff is excellent, but we should wonder why the West is so happy for him to lecture around the world without their intervention and my theory is that he is unwittingly a an enormous help to them in pushing their liberal agenda
How many times have you asked yourself, “Why is learning Arabic so hard even though it’s supposed to be easy❓” 🙌 A few? A dozen❓ At least once❓ And how many times have you found an answer that actually gives you hope in your own ability to master it❓ Exactly. Because HERE is your answer. 🙌 If you’re looking to understand the Qur’an when you stand in prayers this upcoming Ramadan, you NEED to access this free online workshop. It’s free AND packed with more than an entire YEAR’S worth of university Arabic. 👌 Yes, because Arabic has a CORE and CENTRAL theme that can be taught in an incredibly short period of time. ⏳ Knowing this CORE puts you head and shoulders above other students who spend YEARS studying the language as a series of disconnected rules and long lists of words. 👍 Did you know that the majority of meanings in Arabic don’t even come from words. They come from: Vowels Patterns grammatical structures In this 100% free workshop, you will learn how to master the core of how Arabic ACTUALLY works by focusing on the MECHANISM that governs the conveyance of “Non-word meanings”. What in other languages requires separate words to communicate, Arabic does it through single vowels, entire configurations of vowels (what we call patterns) and grammatical structures. That is, the WAY in which words are combined together results in meaning ABOVE AND BEYOND the meanings you get from the individual words. I’ll share with you: ➡ How to END low motivation and eliminate confusion surrounding the language. ➡ The NEW way to master vocabulary without tedious memorization ➡ How to reduce the entire language into just two issues: “sequence not determining grammar” and the “lack of ‘is" issue. ➡ How the Arabic language RESOLVES these two issues through two VERY SIMPLE solutions that can be summarized in a sentence each. ➡ Plus a whole lot more It’s hard to keep your enthusiasm for learning high when you’re continuously taught the basics again and again. Told to memorize endless lists of vocabulary... And taught rules that you really don’t understand and have no earthly idea of why they’re even important... Or how they can ever lead to a better understanding of the Qur’an and Hadith... While one, two or more Ramadans come and go and you’re still stuck at the same level. Year after Year. That’s what this system is designed to help you avoid. Learn how to dive straight into the core of the language and focus on the aspects that matter the most. Bottom line? ➡ Be exposed to what TRULY makes Arabic superior and unique and become emotionally connected so you never give up ➡ Learn in a way that FEEDS your natural desire to learn and keeps you ENTHUSIASTIC ➡ Get a complete BIG PICTURE understanding of the entire language so new rules - instead of overwhelming you - actually excite you because you can see HOW they tie into the big picture. Very good explanation! Really liked the reference to Imam Alusi.
Alhamdulillah. Glad you found it beneficial.
❤❤❤
My sincere gratitude and respect for my Ustaj. Best wishes for him. Anwarul Kabir From Bangladesh
Jazakallah khairan for commenting. May Allah reward you for your encouragement and support.
Assalamu alaikum. I saw in your bio on your website you do on campus 6 month intensive Arabic courses; are these currently still available? If so how does one go about signing up? If not do you offer one to one online teaching?
Wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah. It’s been over 10 years since we did an on campus (which was just my home) intensive Arabic course. They were fun but really draining. Now that we do tafsir, most of my time goes towards preparing and teaching that. As for one to one online teaching, we’ve never offered that. Most of the teaching is orally driven and there’s no focus on developing conversational fluency.. so given that, why not consider the normal online program?
Salaamun alaykum Shaikh,it's been a long time since I've last heard ur beautiful Voice as student ,keep up the Good work ,Sir ,and remain ur student for life as ur Courses intended to be,For Life ,glad to have been ur student , Alhamdulillah
Wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah. Welcome back. Jazakallah khairan for dropping by and the encouraging words. May Allah reward you for your support!
Very important subject matter indeed !!
The best part of the video is from 05:15 how this applies to the Quranic example. Hopefully people have the patience to watch until that point. Or at least read this comment and click the link.
Hi brother, i need your help. I am not arabic speaker. Only i know arabic alphabets with its vowels and trying reading and writing a little . But, i need to know arabic language fluently. So, what could you recommended me the best MSA self-study book? Give me the book's title Please! Thanks a lot.
We don’t teach through books so unfortunately the advice I can give you is really limited. Besides. Our focus is on classical (Quranic) Arabic and we don’t care for much else. Having said that, go to learnarabiconline.com and read the tutorials on that website. They will probably help you more than any book could.
SubhanAllah, this was an eye-opener. Its so serious how the understanding of a verse completely changes with the mixing up of prepositions. Thank you for another critically important video Mufti Yusuf.
Alhamdulillah! Glad you enjoyed it.

its been a week since i got the lesson 1, but i didn't receive the later 3 videos
That doesn’t seem right. Check your spam folder. They might have ended up there. Also respond to the first email and Sr. Asma will look into why the rest of the emails didn’t go out to you. It’s possible you might have inadvertently unsubscribed yourself. I can’t think of any other reason.
@@shariahprogram no the option to unsubscribe button isn't enable so still subbed, and nothing inside spam either . i have replied to the 1st mail just now
I’m not checking the email personally. Asma (who handles the helpdesk) says she received and responded to your email. So please keep communicating with her. Jazakallah khairan.
Jazakallahu khairan for the beneficial knowledge. So the people of Quraysh understood the verses as the way you have explained it to us in this video and still they did not believe? Subhanallah. May I ask, how do you determine which meaning is fitting when we come across the same word (like the word رهقا) ? Can this only be attained by reading explanations of reliable predecessor scholars of Tafsir?
Waiyyakum! Yes. That’s right. This level of understanding requires reading their explanations. Particularly Imam Al-Aloosi and Al-Baydhawi. Or the recent scholar Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi who I draw from the most. Nowadays, it’s all I read. He in turn takes from those earlier books. His book is in Urdu but he’s done all the heavy lifting so I no longer have to scour through volumes and volumes to arrive at the clearest meanings. This entire lecture was based on what he wrote in Bayan Al-Quran with the exception of certain “why Islam is true” points I added myself as I saw they were relevant. Particularly, the vocabulary issues including the 2 meanings of that word, Maulana Thanwi mentioned that in the footnotes referencing the Qamoos. That’s where I got it from. Hope that helps.
@@shariahprogram Allah yubaarik feik Sheikh, Does that mean we can only truly appreciate the miracle of the Arabic languange in the Quran once we reach the level of Balagha in learning Arabic?
You don’t need to study a 550 page monstrosity like the Mukhtasar Al-ma’aani by Imam Taftazani because these tafsir scholars explain how the balagha principles apply. They’ll summarize the principle first before explaining its application. Grammar however needs to be mastered. All the authors assume you already know that well. If you’re a student of knowledge and can read Urdu, get your hands on this book that I use. If you don’t read Urdu, it’s more challenging. I don’t have too many recommendations in that case unfortunately.
Is the link expired I can’t seem to click on it
You mean in the description of this video or in the email you received after opting in?
@ fhe email
The only reason for that I can think of is you’re trying to click on it within the trash/spam folder. You need to move it into your inbox first. After that, it would be clickable. Reply to the email if you’re still having trouble.
