I've been driving for 20+ years but never driven outside the UK... I'm curious about trying mainland Europe, or USA, but nervous because of my lack of experience

A lot of us in the UK are used to switching sides of the road because of driving in Europe - i.e. France, Spain. Roundabouts are just sensible!

Driving on the "wrong side of the road" is easy enough - you're in a lane, and everyone drives in lanes - it's driving on the "wrong" (other) side of the vehicle that feels weird. Your spacial awareness and muscle memory means you just *know* the car extends away from you in the direction you're used to, so when that's reversed, you have to consider it, whereas normally your position within the car is a given. That takes some adjustment. Roundabouts though? A roundabout is not much more than a one-way street built on a curve. If you can steer, and yield to drivers who are already on the road you're waiting to join, you can use a roundabout.

I'm in the UK and basically most countries we visit we have to drive one the other side of the road, you get used to it, doesn't bother me at all, been driving for years on the right when abroad. I actually find driving in the U.S. the worst, signage seems poor and endless traffic lights which slows the traffic down every few blocks. The best roads I think are in mainland Europe, superior to ours which are falling apart.

Have driven in many countries and been driving on left and right. Two countries who I was told "they drive wherever there is a space". The young American wants to try driving in India and China, other countries can be as bad.

Stick your satnav slap bang in the middle of the screen, that'll not obstruct your view at all.

Being from England and driving in the USA, I found the American 4 way stops terrifying. People just take a chance and put their foot down hoping for the best 🤣 Roundabouts are much safer and traffic actually flows much faster than traffic lights and 4 ways stops. I remember 4 ways stops in the UK back in the 70s when I was a kid. They were accident hotspots and every single one I recall was replaced with a roundabout in the 80's

I found that I do not have any problem with driving on the "other" side of the road. But I have some with the cars. First, changing the gears with wrong hand. But that can be mitigated by renting an automatic. Second, I tend to veer towards the left of the lane when driving in a British car because I am used to sit on the left side of the lane. But generally, this is not a big deal.

I think you'll find we drive on the right side of the road. Which is the left. Why most countries incorrectly drive on the right side of the road which is wrong is beyond most right-thinking Brits. And anyway we invented the car, probably. We invented most other things. And if we drove on the right (wrong) side of the road all our road signs would read backwards and we'd end up in Aberdeen when we needed to go to Cornwall. Hope this is all clear.

It's just as strange when British drivers go to Europe and rent a left hand drive car. The first day or two i was driving way too close to the right kerb!

I never have much of a problem with hire cars in the States or Europe, my problem is when I take my motorbike abroad, a moments inattention and you can end up on the wrong side. I put a sticker with an arrow on my spedo...

Back roads in Devon, no centreline, 8 foot hedges or stone walls on either side, only wide enough for one car. If you meet someone coming the other way one of you has to back up until you come to a stretch of road wide enough to allow you to pass.
