Embracing Opportunities in the Philippines: Journey of Filipino Americans
Moving to a new country is a monumental decision, especially when it involves leaving a familiar environment and stepping into the unknown. For many Filipino Americans, the Philippines provides a new frontier, a land brimming with opportunities where they can carve out a niche and make significant contributions. In this blog, we delve into the experiences of Filipino Americans who have successfully transitioned to life in the Philippines and explore the reasons behind their move, the challenges they faced, and the changes they hope to inspire.
Evolution of Filipino American Identity
Growing up Filipino American often involves navigating a dual identity. For some, this means fostering a strong connection to Philippine culture while living abroad. Christy, a beauty queen and multimedia personality, shares her experience of growing up in a tight-knit Filipino community in Jersey City. Her journey underscores the deep sense of cultural pride and the supportive nature of Filipino communities overseas.
The Initial Transition
The decision to move back to the Philippines can stem from various personal and professional motivations. For Christy, it involved reaching a plateau in New York City and searching for a sense of direction. Her initial visit to compete in Binibining Pilipinas marked the beginning of her journey in rediscovering her roots and uncovering new opportunities in Manila. Similarly, Rilson Fernandez, originally from San Jose, California, moved to the Philippines seeking a gateway into Asia, eventually establishing a fruitful career in the media industry.
Opportunities and Advantages
Many Filipino Americans who have moved back emphasize the distinct opportunities available in the Philippines. The less saturated market, particularly in creative industries, provides a fertile ground for growth. Christy’s modeling career, for example, flourished in the Philippines despite initial reservations about her skin tone, highlighting the evolving beauty standards in the country. The increased visibility and unique positioning as Filipino Americans often open doors that might remain closed elsewhere.
Cultural Adaptations and Integration
Living in the Philippines involves adapting to local customs and integrating into the community. Being social media savvy and harnessing the creative potential of Filipinos plays a significant role in this process. The culture of helping each other, or the ‘Bayanihan spirit,’ fosters a welcoming environment for newcomers. However, navigating societal norms, such as the emphasis on lighter skin in beauty standards, requires sensitivity and adaptability.
Challenges and Resilience
Moving to a new country is not without its hurdles. Filipino Americans often confront bureaucratic challenges and cultural differences. Christy discusses the scrutiny she faced in the beauty pageant scene, where her upbringing in the U.S. sometimes led to her being judged as not "Filipino enough." Rilson shares his experience of adjusting to different professional expectations and societal norms. Despite these challenges, the supportive community and the wide range of opportunities help in overcoming initial difficulties.
Advocating for Change
Many Filipino Americans leverage their influential positions to advocate for notable causes. Christy and Rilson passionately discuss the need for better environmental practices and more substantial investments in education. Addressing sustainability and reducing plastic pollution are close to Christy’s heart, especially as a diver and surf enthusiast who has seen firsthand the impact of waste on the oceans.
The Impact of Financial Literacy
Another critical area for improvement in the Philippines is financial literacy. Enhancing financial education can empower individuals to make informed decisions, ultimately contributing to economic stability and growth. Teaching basic financial principles from a young age can help individuals avoid pitfalls such as debt and mismanagement of resources.
The Allure of the Philippines
The Philippines offers a compelling mix of professional opportunities, favorable living conditions, and a rich cultural experience. The cost of living, access to beautiful natural landscapes, and the entrepreneurial spirit make it an attractive destination for those looking to start anew. Christy highlights the difference in living standards, comparing her life in New York City to her comfortable lifestyle in Manila.

He just can't buy that stuff he said. Likewise everyone who said its overpriced. Compare it to your country that only offers a room and a parking lot, we offer a pool, gym, parking lot, park, reading room, a grocery store right within the building, a shopping mall 2nd floor, an arcade area , wifi area when you don't have it in your room plus the best people in the Hospitality industry for FREE. FREEEEEEE. Take that for your cheap price.

You can find a family selling an old.cocnut farm on decent flat land say q acre or 4000 am for $2000 or 110,000php. But it is rural province area. I think it's fair to compare Bangkok to Manila, but my point is it is possible to find very cheap land, you just have to be willing to stay away from BGC, Makati & all those jokingly overpriced areas. Some obviously prefer that otherwise prices wouldn't be where they are, but I wouldn't buy or even rent there even if it was 90% cheaper lol. Some people just live big congested cities so I'm lucky in I get the country quiet open vibe I want, while saving massive amounts of money.

Capital city is too high in cost like Manila. I agree on those terms even for a local tourist but if you know the place so much it can help reduce the high budget cost in the place you stay and the transportation. I tried travelling with trains and jeeps that can help me in my tour of the city. It is up to the tourist.

We left the Philippines in 1973. I am now in the process of moving back to Philippines. I see a big problem in the farming and agriculture industry in the country. Farmers are the hardest working people group but are most often taken advance by reseller, distributor and neglected by the government. So, I've purchased a farm in hopes to model, influence other farms to do things differently.

The thing is. Philippines have changed soooo much in the last 20 years. Filipinos have also changed so much. The old bad stereotypes about Filipinos ain't even accurate anymore. Just 20 years ago, Filipinos were the "ghetto asians" in the US. We were considered the "poor asians"... But look at us now. Filipinos ranks 3rd with the highest house hold salary in all of the ethnic groups in the U.S. Jewish and Indians ranked highest. Imagine that... Out of all the 150+ ethnic groups in the U.S. We managed to climb up the 3rd spot in just 20 years..... Philippines will be the same. But it will take time.
