Great scene that illustrates Dan is more complex than he first appears. More than once the show references his high conviction rate. If he was as mercenary as is sometimes portrayed, he would not be working for the justice system, he'd be a defense attorney making top dollar working for rich guilty clients. Clearly Dan has ideals but he's coy about his altruism. He lets his cynicism take centre stage.
