The process of corruption following after the consumption of the apple was rather not a result of possession by I believe it was a result of Nightmare’s already heavy negativity combining with the apple’s negativity. In the original story, golden apples make the villagers feel happy because the apples contain positive feelings, alluding that the black apples are the same but with a different effect.
