    I really do hope you can make a Film about Archie Brennan, it would be a wonderful thing to achieve and document. My Dad a Scottish Rodier was part of the very first self Build Society in Scotland in 1958 and originally from Leith. A few years on from the build, we welcomed new neighbours the Brenan's and I became and still am good friends with Phil Brennan Robert's Son and brother of Archie. Phil after graduating from Uni went off to Los Angeles to work in special effects in the Hollywood Film Industry. My Grandmother lived in Restalrig in Leith and had a chat with Sean as he delivered milk and dairy produce around Leith, Gran got to know about Archie as Sean often stopped and talked about his best pal. It is indeed a small world that Archie's brother Robert became our neighbours in Barntongate a few years after Sean and Archie had traveled to London to cast for parts in theater and film. The rest is history, other than that I can say the whole Brennan family are all natural gifted artist. All the best with your future documentary.

    0:30 Huh... really? I'm seeing a whole bunch of rug makers on youtube that would beg to differ. And a whole bunch of commercial rug makers that would also beg to differ. And they likely all started by watching someone and thinking... huh, that looks easy I bet I can do that. But rather than having some pretentious artist snort... "ha...No you can't... I know you can't" they set to work and showed they could. This is the problem with artistic pretension... the idea that somehow you're so special and different, and can do somnething no one else can do. Rather than snorting and saying no you can't... how about... Yes, with some effort and practice you definitely can... it just takes a little time and work. Now, I will give the benefit of the doubt here. This is a 4 minute short piece and maybe if you sat down with them, they actually would be encouraging and give advice and pointers, but in the community I do see far too often the type that say "no... I am an artists, this is not something you can learn... I have a special gift and you can't do it." And 99.9% of the time, thats nonsese... the vast majority of creatives are a byproduct of hard work, not "talent". The 0.1% of people (probably more like 0.001%) that truly have talent, still require hard work to get them there, but that "talent' takes them above and beyond anyone else in their field. A better way to see it is in athletes, two people can train just as hard, one will go on to be a gold medalist, the other wont even qualify. Yet that person who didn't qualify will still be light years ahead of the rest of society who do not put in the work. Art is no different. I don't disagree talent is a thing, but talent just seperates hard workers, from the exceptional... And most art, especially commercial art, like this rug (no matter how nice it is) is just the by product of hard work... and encouragement from those whose work they admire. Seen far to many potential creatives squashed early on by pretensious creatives.

    • @macswanton9622
      @macswanton9622 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 'No, you can't' is the gauntlet, implying that, if you can, you will have truly accomplished something that few would fully appreciate in terms of labor. This artist defies you to excel. 'Problem with artistic pretension'. Do. Tell us all.

    • @neilgooge
      @neilgooge 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macswanton9622 Yeah, you hear that excuse a lot, I am being negative or dismisive to encourage you. Problem with that idea is that without context, its not a gauntlet, it's just what it is, negative or dismisive at best... at worst, it's a genuine belief that you can do something someone else couldn't do. No you can't... it's taken me twenty years of study, training and hard work to get here, if you think you can do it, show me what you've got. That would be a gauntlet defying you to achieve something. While also pointing out what it takes to reach a particular level within any discipline. While also helping others appreciate what it takes to get there, why people get paid the money they do for their successes, no matter how easy they make it look. Encouraging others to take those first steps, rather than shuting the door in their face. And I think defending the behaviour with such outdated cliches just adds to the problems of artistic pretention. But then some how I don't think I'd need to all. Maybe just those who need to hear it, or defend it, but more importantly those who might take such comments or outlooks seriously.
