Why are Botafogo so good this season? (ft. Tiquinho Soares) What's happened to Palmeiras?
มุมมอง 295ปีที่แล้ว
This video is a clip taken from a discussion with a Flamengo fan in Rio and a Palmeiras fan. We discuss Brazilian football topics in English to promote the championship and also to help English learners. Tiquinho Soares has arguably been the best player in the Brasileirao this season and we discuss why Botafogo are top of the league.

3:25 just to add, Pelé said Vasco has the most beautiful story in football. To explain, the only way for them to get back into the league other than disposing the black players was by getting a stadium, which they couldnt finance, so the fans themselves helped finance AND build what was then the biggest stadium in south america, the "São Januário". Thus why Pelé named Vasco as the club with the most beautiful story in football.

If you like Brazil and want to produce football content from my country, have respect for my country and don't bring this political shit mixed with football. The history of Vasco da Gama is one of the most beautiful in Brazil. ❤ It fought against racism in football at a time when black people were not accepted, its stadium was built with the help of its fans and the club has the recognition of Portugal to change its name to Real Vasco da Gama if it wants.

Just a quick correction, the nickname of "Porco" (pig) of Palmeiras is due to an unfair play they did in 1967. During the dispute of Campeonato Paulista of 1967, two Corinthians players (Lidu and Eduardo) have died on a car crash. The rules of the championship didn't allowed any player to be substituted but an exception could be made if all other teams agreed. All the other 18 teams agreed to it right on time, but Palmeiras prefered to say no, because Corinthians always have been they biggest rivals. From that movement, supporters from all teams started to call them "Espírito de Porco", what can be translated to "pig-spirit", something that can be translated maybe as "wet blanket".

just confirmed it. Stadiums getting nicknamed after their neighborhood are not uncommon. Morumbi and Pacaembu in São Paulo being two famous examples. Real name of the Aflitos Stadium is Estádio Eládio de Barros Carvalho As for the Aflitos neighborhood in Recife, it got it's name from a Chapel built in 1762, Chapel of our Lady of the Afflicted. Our Lady of the Afflicted (Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos) is a Marian devotion that originated in Portugal and spread to Brazil. Unlike other Marian titles, it isn't tied to a specific apparition or miracle. Instead, it reflects people's faith in Mary as a source of comfort during times of suffering and hardship. Seen as a compassionate mother, believers turn to her for strength and peace when facing personal or communal challenges. This devotion grew in rural areas and fishing communities, becoming a symbol of hope and resilience. Even today, processions and prayers in her honor continue, especially among those seeking relief from difficult situations. In other words... if we want to be REALLY descriptive, it's the FOOTBALL BATTLE THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE STADIUM LOCATED AT THE RECIFE NEIGHBORHOOD NAMED AFTER THE CHAPEL DEVOTED TO ST MARY OF THE AFFLICTED.

Back in 2005, the Brazilian Serie B was not a league format. I think only 2 teams would be promoted and there was a kinda of playoff where they faced each other only once and the top two would be promoted. Even the Brazilian Serie A only became standard european league format in 2003. It had playoffs before that. With the size of Brazil, since it became standard league format, it really has priviledged the clubs playing in a more central area of Brazil with more teams around... meaning São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, since they must travel MUCH less.

So, about the clubs Cruzeiro and Atlético from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais (MG) the mascots were given during the 40s. One can easily overlook how the rivals mascots can be set in the Greek dichotomy of Intelect (Fox) vs Force (Rooster). Also, that is a preying fight there. I think you treated their part too fast, especially compared to the clubs of Rio and São Paulo, so here more info: 7:19 Cruzeiro was given the Fox (Raposa) as a mascot (and therefore its nickname) by the cartoonist because its president was at the time clever and cunning as a fox. Cruzeiro also has two nicknames, "Zêro", the way "Zeiro" sounds in Minas Gerais accent, and Cabuloso, that means something/someone that imposes fear and dread on people. In everyday life, Cruzeiro fans use Cruzeiro and Cabuloso to refer to the club, while Fox is the visual representation and "Zêro" is more lyrical, used in chants for example. 6:52 Alt-MG* has its nickname "rooster" (galo) given by the cartoonist in 1945 because its president at the time he had a very combative manner, like a fighting cock (cockfighting is not a completely legal practice in Brazil "the spirit of the club". One can for sure say that "Rooster" is the name most of its supporters use when they refer to their team in day to day talks but also visually/imagetically and lyrically (in chants).

Coritiba is a big club here in the south of the country, but in recent years it has been oscillating between the first and second division. The team is known as "coxa" which means thigh, this is due to the fact that the club came from Germany, and there were many white people in the club and the fans of the rival team "athetico paranaese" were responsible for maliciously nicknamed the players, however the club embraced it as a nickname and is currently the biggest champion of Paraná with 39 titles , 2 series B and 1 series A (and also 2 runners-up in the Copa do Brasil) not to mention the club's great tradition, which has the largest fan base in the state of Paraná, and the Olympic-shaped stadium, unlike many other trendy arenas. Even though it is in the second division of the Brazilian championship, Coritiba will host Brazilian national team games because of the high level of the "Couto Pereira" stadium. Since 1909, bringing strength, determination and tradition even though it is currently an average team, but with a lot of history. 🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬💚💚💚

As you can see, my top 23 is defined by "mass clubs" (clubes de massa, com torcidas de 1 milhão ou mais), which I think is fair enough to represent our demographic. 12 clubs from the Southeast, 4 from the South, 5 from the Northeast and 2 from the North. You could also add Goiás and Vila Nova and make it a Big25 list instead of 23, but the general parameter still remains. When we talk about the G12, we ignore the continental aspect of our country and focus solely on 4 states (RJ, SP, MG and RS) and nowhere else
