I meant to watch your videos earlier but I got so busy with college and graduation, but I just watched this one and your majoras mask video and they are both so professional and high quality. I hope you continue making videos, I know that it can be frustrating being a smaller TH-camr, but this content is genuinely great! I feel like every fandom has this loud minority that makes it toxic. I kind of try not to engage with fandom spaces anymore, as many have seem to have gotten way to bad. I was a huge Star Wars fan, but so many people I’ve interacted with in that community have been so hateful, but I think it’s good to remember that they are probably not the majority
"Trauma is a disorder of time." is such a profound statement.
Majora's Mask is such an Amazing game. And to think that it almost wasn't made as they were rushed and some of the things that make the game is magical and deep are because they were rushed during production. I wonder if Nintendo had full faith in the game and gave it a better budget, a decent timeline to work with, and put more effort in if it would have been better, OR, would it have just become a regular Zelda style game and would have been forgotten about. And to add some notes, I believe that Skull Kid is mad at everything in Termina because in the story the giants "leave him" to protect the people of Termina in the east, west, north and south. So he probably blames all of Termina for taking is friends away and they should pay. And the ending actually showed me something I misinterpreted every time I played the game When skull kid says "I thought they didn't want to be friends with me" and "they hadn't forgotten me" I thought he was reffering to that exact point in time. But he was referring to when they left him to protect Termina and which was the 'stresser' for why he became so angry and vengeful
That was very beautiful actually
This was an amazing breakdown that lead me to recognize a lot of my own trauma, and the fact that i've let it destroy me for so long. I still have a lot to do to move past, well the past but you gave me the tools to see what I'm doing wrong in my recovery period. This was also an amazing take on one of my favorite video games of all time
38:55 song?
Even by Nintendo standards, I don't think the Zelda fandom is really all that bad... The only real disconnect I've seen is the monolith of newer fans post BotW skewing the general consensus of the group with their sheer numbers.
This actually relates to me and my own trauma so accurately! I literally cried a bit because I see the truth of everything you're saying! In fact it seems like I understood my own trauma better with this as a relatable example from my childhood.
CHIMPINGA
Just yesterday I found myself crying and remembering how related I felt to Majoras… This video came just in time, thank you for sharing this master piece and helping me understand not only one of my all time favorite games, but understand myself.
Around 4.5% [This comment is for my own purposes of making a playlist, and is not a judgement of quality.]
Ff7r fans are worse. They swear a bloated padded game full of tower climbing and lame side quests is a masterpiece
Zelda is for kids
I'm a zelda fan and I'm toxic😡😡
Also, Link in Majora's Mask shares Stone Cold Steve Austin's mannerisms" Arrove, raise hell, leave. - In this sense, Link arrives, heals everyone, fights every enemy and leaves. He does actually save the world of Termina, but leaves before he can fully see everything healed.
Majora's Mask taught me how much I hate clocks, time and the fact that everything in this life is short lived. 🫠🙃
Found you by chance and instantly subscribed! I have been looking for a channel like yours for so long!
Revisiting this because its spooky season
Such a great video! Thank you so much for that. Since I was a child I loved this game and I still love it. Always consumed and looked up for content about it. But I never saw someone talking about how this game can be both depressing and beautiful at the same time, maybe not with such an incredible narrative as you did here. With that being said, I would like to share some thoughts/doubts: I always think about Majora's persona (maybe archetype?) in that history. Could it be a demon/deity that uses all those intense and strong energies/feelings like anger, trauma, and pain from people as fuel? Like an emotional parasite (that at the end of the game can survive alone and have no use for Skull Kid anymore). I always felt like we could see more of Majora's evilness, or understand better what is "behind the mask" (lol), even if we had philosophical answers - not a logical understanding (why, when, or who). It would be fun to see Majora's freed from the mask. But it was 2000, right? The game couldn't be that big... Anyway. Loved your video! Haha
Jeez. I had to watch this video twice. Im navigating PTSD currently and it felt like i started to understand things more.
I know you're not a psychologist, but this would be a good dissertation. I'm just saying.
Forgiveness also, is devine, but never pay a full price for a late pizza.
That was a Phenomenal video.
Only ones i hate are the ones that dislike the newer fans. They hate it if you enjoy BoTW more than OoT.
I'm not crying, you're crying! god iu'm not even finished yet
i'm now finished and crying like an idiot and also i can't believe tingle in the credits i'll never forgive this- oh no
This video is so super good, I hope it gets more views!!
Thank you!
You've made so many wonderful points in this video and I just want to thank you for putting it out into the world.
Great take and well argued. Thank you for the video.
This is a fantastic analysis of the game. Love this!!
I watched this video a year ago after escaping domestic violence, being homeless for years, and finally moving into my own space. I couldn’t understand why I was suddenly so angry because all the bad things I had endured were finally over. I felt ashamed for not being grateful for my circumstances and I felt guilt because of all the people I had seen suffer in circumstances alongside of me that I couldn’t help or save. I recognized I had been in a state of survival for so long that my body finally felt safe enough to start processing emotions. I’m getting my Master’s in psychology rn and I just want to say this is so beautifully made. You’re incredibly well spoken and have a great narrative voice. I love the care, thorough research, and sensitivity you put into the video. The Zelda series is so near and dear to my heart, this video not only assisted me with feeling less isolated, but helped me get back in touch with memories of safer, simpler, and happier times. I’ve never forgotten that you mentioned that this game involves making meaning out of connections, and that’s what helps Link to heal. That changed the way I began to deal with my trauma, it made a huge difference in my life. I have my BA in English and can also greatly appreciate the figurative nature of the symbolism that’s present in this title. Just through and through, thank you so much for making this! I’ve searched for a while to find it again and finally did today ☺️ Edit: Wanted to add one final piece to this long comment. Narrative therapy is a theoretical framework that focuses on the meaning a person makes of their lived experiences and their life as a whole. You mentioned that the initiative of the game changes when Link seeks to help others. I’d like to agree that this becomes his meaning, though he’s always been there to save Hyrule in extraordinary ways. This strategy is innate to his role, and offers a sense of normality to the psyche of his character. It is a psychological safeguard and a coping strategy. In my personal life, training to become a therapist is the meaning I’ve gained from experiencing trauma. The insight I’ve gained allows me to offer something back to others and subsequently make use of my hardships. Like Link, attempting to help others with what I’ve learned became my meaning too ☀️
❤
I was all good until the Aggression & Reconciliation section. Starting there, it made me look back on the last ~20 years of my life...and it really hit hard. I was...still kinda am...in Skull Kid's situation. It gave me some insight into what's been going on with myself. It hurts a lot, but it was something I needed to see. I nearly broke down as I listened to your explanation. Thank you...I really needed that insight. ❤
The Zelda fandom is actually a GARBAGE! (or rather, kinda SUCKS) Because the Zelda fandom doesn't know how to decide whether to criticize or love a game in the franchise. There are several games in the franchise that receive stupid and almost pointless hate. Examples: Zelda DS games, Zelda Skyward Sword, Zelda Botw, Zelda TotK and Zelda Wind Waker.
Add twilight princess and majoras mask to that list. MM hate stopped when WW came out. And TP hate stopped when SS came out. SS hate stopped when botw came out. And now it’s botw and totk turn to get hate. Annoying fan base.
21:06 probably the most love link has ever gotten in the entire series
Anyone that takes different opinions from their fandom as a personal attack is PATHETIC. I engage with fandoms because I want to discuss things I like with other people, not because I need a personal hugbox to validate my opinions all the time or because I NEED to make my interest take up my identity. It's stupid and pathetic.
In my opinion, I think skull kid is attempting to commit suicide. He has so much anger to the world that he has pushed himself away from, and tael, his last “friend” attempting to have link and tatl, go find his old friends stop him from this just enrages him. In the way we see link find purpose through healing everyone, skull kid is the exact opposite of that, and the opposite of health is death. Another reason I believe this is you can see the skull kid watching the moon as it creeps ever closer, knowing that at the end of the 3rd day he will be at the clock tower and it will crush him. This is excellent symbolism because often a lot of people who commit, contemplate it for a long time before they actually do it. In a way, link saves him from himself. I believe this to be the only real objective of the game, because every time you send time back everything you do is erased, and it is nearly impossible to make everyone happy in one 3 day cycle, but on that final cycle when you finally assemble everything you need, skull kid is the only character that is guaranteed to have been effected by link in some way, thus saving his life. If you or someone you know is dealing with mental illness and are contemplating hurting yourself or others, just know there is a way out of this mindset and that you are loved.
God I wish I could just forget all of my knowledge about majoras mask so I could play it blind again.
Same
The ending to MM is so beautifully vague, perhaps the giants might even be speaking to the player when they say "forgive your friend."
Never played a Link game, are they any good?
Majora's Mask >>> every other Zelda game
When I was younger, I always liked the Anju/Kafei story because I wanted to bury my face in Anju's bust. My first bust was to Anju. Those triangles do things for me, man. I love older women.
I always thought "Forgive your friend" was directed at Link. It made me think that Link may be angry at Navi for leaving him, that while she did something that hurt him, she did not do it specifically to hurt him. Forgiveness is something that takes courage and the heart of a hero to find, and it is one of the key differences between Link and Majora, who are so much alike; while Link eventually can let go of the grief and the power he has, Majora holds onto it and is filled with wrath until the very end.
The Zelda fanbase is legit making me dislike Zelda though and it used to be my favorite series. They're like a cult with not a single cell of criticism in their bodies, seing BotW and TotK like it was the 2nd coming of Christ.
There’s definitely a split in the fanbase vis-a-vis the “old vs new” Zelda argument. It’s a weird time to be a Zelda fan.
You are the cult member actually. I used to to like Zelda but people like you made me hate it. Hiding toxic hate behind “constructive criticism” You people trashed every single game for the last 24 years. I’m tired of you people.
@hass556 Nah, I alway saw the good in every last one of them and loved them all. Heck, 2 of my favorites are Wind Waker (since day 1) and Phantom Hourglass. There is just no excusing the piece of garbage that TotK is though. Echoes of Wisdom is infinitely better in every way. EoW was a Zelda game at least and a good one at that.
What an incredible video. The way you connected trauma to these models of grief drove home the point, and your own added thoughts and feelings had an empath like me crying. I have always played games at face value but adding a layer of reality for the protagonist and NPCs really plucks the heart strings. As someone that has navigated these roads as an adult human there are no truer words than, "Time starts to move again."
Thank you The Creepy & The Cozy, i will now use this as my therapy session
It’s free!
i love this game and oot so much...why do i always get a nostalgic feeling. want to play it then play for 10 min and turn it off cuz it feels like a chore....idk...maybe cuz ive 100% the game years ago?
This video is beautiful.
