How to inspect Lower Ball Joints the correct way on a 3rd Gen 4Runner EP 20
Demonstrating how to check the LBJs, the only way, using the service manual.
The wrong way is using a shovel, pry bar, or other similar tool without a dial indicator.

I’ll just replace mine every 90k. It’s 6 bolts/side.
super cool they should be factory for ram 5.7/3.6 since the plug is right in front of the sway bar
lol dam
that garden pump was genius
originally bought my first garden sprayer to fill my front diff on my 4runner. And it worked so well. So bought another garden sprayer to fill my transmission fluid. I have 2 now. 1 for gear oil (yellow-ish oil) and one for transmission oil (red oil). th-cam.com/video/eX6K6tPX6oQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=husNrG6aWbUxBa8E&t=33
how did you get the manual did you get it from fords website ?
No. just looked online and found a good link and purchased.
Two things I think you got wrong. The service manual does not state to jack on the LCA. When you loaded up the bottle jack you are forcing the ball into its seat with an unknown preload. So lifting on the spindle via the hub is first counteracting the bottle jack preload. The strut/spring is already pushing the LCA downwards at full droop with about 1000 lbs force at the spring due to spring preload which is ~500lbs force at the wheel hub. The only force you’re counteracting is the weight of the spindle, disc, hub, UCA and partial weight of the CV. If your UCA bushings are intact and were torqued with the vehicle loaded they are helping to pull up that assembly (also why it springs up when you pop the UCA ball joint). I can’t tell you why Toyota engineers state 66 pounds for sure but my guess is that it’s close to the weight of that assembly of upper components so they want you to push hard enough that you’re causing it to lift if there’s slop in the LBJ. There isn’t really an upper limit because the total corner weight of the vehicle would be acting upwards on the hub when you’re driving. Second thing is that I think you mid-read the units. 66 lbf is pounds force. Note that elsewhere in the manual (like the next page where it provides torque values for the LBJ) torque specifications as ft.lb meaning foot pounds. The unit lbf is force, not torque. I don’t think you measured what you think you measured.
Thanks for sharing your comment. The service manual doesn't specify to support the lower control arm, but I did anyways so that I could record it without having too much movement or have to worry about the dial indicator magnetic base moving between one and another. I had checked the balljoints multiple times on different seasons of the year with and without supporting the lower control arm and it ultimately gives the same combined reading. Using the conversion chart 66 lbf = 66 ft lbs. It's the same output, different unit.
To your last point, I respectfully disagree. Usually I would leave this alone but as the LBJ is a matter of public safety it’s important to explain further. No one has to take my word for it so I provide links to Wikipedia to back it up. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_(force) The unit lbf is the engineering unit of pounds force. It is the force one slug of mass exerts when in earths gravity. Contrast with, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foot-pound_(energy) An engineering unit or energy or torque, which are equivalent since energy is force times distance.
@@PeterC-w3u it yields the same results. 1lbf = 4.44 N 66 x 4.44 = 294N Which is what is shown in 1:26.
Great video
Thank you.
Great video with technical details and explanation of why it the ball joint inspection was performed this way. Thanks TTR.
@@gregorypeterschmidt620 I appreciate your feedback!
Appreciate the mileage note. Always good to communicate that update.
😂 I love it! Let's do an experiment. I installed an OEM starter about 150,000 mi ago on my 5VZ-FE engine currently at about 400,000 mi. I'll bet you $100 that my starter outlasts yours.
Doesn't matter if I buy oem or non-oem. They both will last the same to me based on how I drive. No reason to spend big money on OEM when the starter in this video has better warranty than oem. So in theory, you'd be correct. Heres why i wont buy OEM starter. My OEM starter i had flooded with clay in this clip. th-cam.com/video/tsdJMA4Or4E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kfp64PfrroE8NNOm&t=147
Nothing surprises me anymore mate 😅🇦🇺
The bearing isn't dry it's flogged out or possibly got a heap of water in it and has rusted.
Does it have a smell to it
Smells a little dusty.
Gooks aint making em like they used to 😂
Bruh, you killing me with the aftermarket parts... Stop getting ripped off and just buy denso from Amazon or a local denso dealer. It's the same damn price.
You’re wrong in a lot of ways. Nothing wrong with local parts store products. Some are bad, but not the ones i use. On my VW I have a non oem starter , alternator and radiator since 2013. Stop drinking the OEM only kool aid.
Lol. Don't buy aftermarket. Denso is the OEM. Buy from them. It's about the same price as anything else.
The one is dry from driving though 24 inches Of water and water shaking up over the engine. The oem alternator would have suffered the same damage. And there’s nothing wrong with aftermarket parts
@@twinturboranch454 There are a few decent aftermarket store brands that are OK, but non of them will ever be as good as what Toyota produces through their subsidiaries, Denso, Aisin, Advics, AW, etc. The great thing is that you can buy the same dealer part from the subsidiary for half the price which is usually the same price as the aftermarket part. Toyota and its subsidiaries put a huge amount of effort into designing for part longevity so if you can get the originally designed part with the same good quality materials for the same price as anything else, why not?
@@jacobs2309 bought it locally. Not oem. And didn’t have to wait a week nor 48 hours. From the parts store to my vehicle. And didn’t pay the high price most parts are marked up to (some of them). The last part I bought that was OEM was my flex plate. Documented in one of my videos.
Where did you get your apim at? And what was roughly the cost. Just got told from ford mine went out completely and the quote they gave me was an insane amount.
online i dont remember. around 550 shipped. i dont remember it was a bit ago. I provided my VIN to the seller so they can program the appropriate features to it. example massage seats, ambient lighting etc. and i know what you mean about the dealer. it was incredibly and disgustingly overpriced.

Thanks. I don’t remember. I think around 550
hey bro how are you, if you leave me the link where to buy that jack to lower the Transmission
Bought it at garage sale (Facebook marketplace). You can buy it at HoboFreight. But I recommend the bigger transmission jack that’s colored gray. If you can flex the funds.
🔥🔥
Did you get the flex plate knock or was there no warning to the plate finally giving out?
Sounded like engine knock in cylinder 6 area (driver side rear). When it finally failed it sounded like grinding synchros in a manual.
Would it be safe to assume that the knocking went away around 1.5-2k rpm? Then after a few minutes of have a load went away? Then creeped back on idle?
@@Das_Teej you won’t be able to hear it at cruising rpm. The engine, fan, and environmental noise would be louder. I replaced my sparks plugs even though I didn’t need to and oil. And noise went away. That was when my mind started believing what I wanted prior to failure.
Drain and fill back
i just added more pag oil after i bolted to the engine.

@twinturboranch454 I'm looking at a 3rd Gen 4Runner and the guy said he pulled his buddy out of a ditch, and after that, it won't go back into 4x4 mode. Other than that, the frame is practically rust free.
@@sierra-legacyavila if it has an actuator it may have suffered physical damage, maybe. Mine was water intrusion. Some 4Runners don’t have actuator on transfer case if it’s has a manual shifter aka J-shift. Mine isn’t a j-shift, it’s an i-shift. Mine is electronic for 2/4hi and a combination of both electronic and manual for 4Lo. J-shift is 100% manual. Some exceptions apply to newer ones with multi-mode transfer case.
@@sierra-legacyavila I read your comment wrong. I thought the 4Runner fell on the ditch and now doesn’t work. If the 4Runner pulled someone out of the ditch there are too many variables that can cause failure. Most of them I would blame the driver.
@@twinturboranch454 Thanks, I was just about to buy it.

Actually yes lol 😂
The big question is....over the last 2 years did the Apim upgrade solve all your issues? Good video!
Yes it did. I’m in my truck right now from lunch break with the same APIM I installed in this video. I use it daily with Google maps and music. 👍🏼
Good to know!!! My truck is a 2020 and mine just started acting up... it started with the backup camera staying on when shifting out of reverse. Then the black screen, which I found how to reset... now it constantly changes the background to daytime even at night (which I prefer night settings all the time)... I bought the extended warranty but unsure if this is covered or just power train. I will how to call the dealer to see, but regardless, I'm so glad I found your video!!! And glad you haven't had any more issues. Thank you!
@@steph1226 np hopefully warranty covers. if not this repair isn't too complicated.
did you remove the brake lines?

Did you have to program it to your truck? Was it a new module or used?
Yes. Has to be programmed to my VIN. It’s from a newer truck. So yes it’s used.
The gearbox yeah
Beg for me!
Your winch looks very hidden diy or did you buy it?
Yes very hidden. If you have the fat lip oem bumper on your 4runner then it’s 100% hidden. HiddenWinch. Bought it online.
Where is this?
The link is posted in the description. its called Academi.
Hi great video, I am in the process of replacing the transfer case actuator. I bought a used transfer case with it. I see you were able to pull the gear off easily. the gear is jammed in and its hard to pry off. Any tricks to getting it off. I wanted to ask the question off line. But I hope you can give me some advise . Thanks Frank
Go to 1:50 and you’ll notice I rotated the actuator left and right gently and let the magnet do the pulling.
got it I have the bolts removed and when I twist it the gear moves on the shaft. It's about 50% out, something is binding. Since this case is outside the truck I have been trying a pick tool with not so much luck. But I will trying rocking it back and forth to see that the gears are not binding. @@twinturboranch454
I just grabbed mine for my ford explorer it didn't work rubbish
Did you order just the apim part number or did you order it based on your explorer VIN?
Very helpful thanks, 4wd engaging issues. The ending with tailgate guy…that is funny 😂.
Could you send a link for part and part number. Thank you
i think ebay. the part number is irrelevant for the most part. Its based on compatibility and annotated prior to paying. Programming is to your VIN is the key.
Do you have to drain the transmission fluid by truck has 348k on it not sure last time fluid been changed bought it around 300k now flexplate cracked any advice? Thank you
Yes, there are 2 fluid hardlines that connect to the transmission on the right side in front of the serial number plate 14:50. It will leak a little after draining from the hardline connection. I reused my fluid due to it being very clean. Like cranberry juice.
@@twinturboranch454 awesome thank you thats a good idea to re use the fluid thanks alot
@@twinturboranch454also did you use oem flexplate or could i buy aftermarket one?
@@jeffreymaupin4245 OEM and brand new flexplate. I recommend you do the same, regardless of price.
I have to do mine and although i own all of these tools and parts, this doesnt look fun. How long did it take you?
1 month. I took my time. If it was too hot, I didn’t work on it. And I was at a stopping point for about 16 days because I ordered the wrong parts initially due to return and reorder. If all parts are on hand, aren’t lazy like me, and you have a dedicated helper from start to finish, it’s possible in a weekend with lots of cold beverages and a burger burn 🔥 🍔
