    Do we think these attitudes are gone? Oh heck no! We have a political party today whose campaign for presidency involves bashing women who have not had children. This ties a woman's value to one thing, being a baby factory. Vote folks, vote!

    The women (and men) of the 20th century did all the work, even the rather backward USA it was all done before the 21st century. The current generation pretending to be in the same struggle or claiming their successes as theirs is not a testament to the strength of women, on the contrary. Children growing up without one the parents is not a success, abortions are also a failure to use the wide availabilty of birth control. I'm all in favour of equal rights but the practicality of it is the product of human innovation and technological progress. Before the 20th century running a household was a serious full time job for most women, while the men had a far harder job to do. Mining, harpooning whales in the freezing cold, not jobs women really wanted to do but weren't allowed to. But I'm sure those women would have done better than the spoiled whiners with their emotional and mental problems of Gen Z. At least in the late 20th century a family could still be raised on one income, and the wife working was a luxury of extra income. Women's liberation has resulted in the woman's part of the family income mostly ending up in the pockets of a very few rich men. So of course the corporatocracy is behind this divide and rule propaganda. Men and women should not let themselves be divided and fight them together, as equals.

    We couldn't wear pants in school in Iowa, USA. We had snow drifts up to my butt. You could wear pants under your dress to walk to school but you better go straight to the bathroom and take them off before anyone saw you. Even at 5 years old I knew that was insane behavior.

    One thing to keep in mind about drinking during this era; when men came home from World War II they had PTSD just like every other generation. Unfortunately they weren't allowed to address it. The war is over! Let's move on and enjoy our lives! They weren't allowed to acknowledge they were traumatized by war which is why they drank as much as they did. As Roger said about his generation and drinking, "We drink because we deserve it"

    • @Nostalgicleigh
      @Nostalgicleigh หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a really insightful point! It's heartbreaking how societal pressures influenced their coping mechanisms. Roger's quote really captures that complex mix of denial and justification. Thanks for sharing this perspective!

    I found one in a thrift store. My mom was a young woman in the 40s. These were a popular pot because all metals were used for the WWII efforts and this type of pot didn’t use much metal! She remembered they were very cheap at the time. Of course I bought it and we had a lot of coffee from it! The tube is super delicate and ours bit the dust when that got broken.

    • @Nostalgicleigh
      @Nostalgicleigh หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's amazing! I love hearing stories like this-it really brings history to life. I never knew that these pots were popular due to the metal shortages during WWII. It's so cool that you found one and used it just like they did back then. Thanks for sharing this piece of history with me!

    I am 44 years old, and my first job out of high school (in 1998) was as a directory assistance operator for USWest (now part of CenturyTel) in Waterloo Iowa. At that time I did directory assistance for 11 western states. The floor below us was the old "zero operator" floor, which had much fewer staff by that point. In 1998 and '99 when I worked there, the zero operators were already largely defunct. Most of the calls they got were people wanting to know the time, or occasionally you would still get old folks who actually would still dial zero and have the operator place calls for them (not kidding). I want to say that USWest finally closed their "zero" operations in or around the year 2000 (don't quote me on that). I know that after I quit working there they eventually closed the entire office. There are at least to my knowledge no operators left at that location. We also had sister offices in Colorado and Oregon which I imagine are also closed by this point. My mother as her first job out of high school (1968) was the type of zero operator discussed in this video. She worked for AT&T at what eventually got split into Southwestern Bell in Texas. Phones have certainly changed a lot over my lifetime!

      @Nostalgicleigh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow, that's such an interesting story! It must have been quite an experience working as a directory assistance operator back then. It's fascinating how the role of operators evolved and eventually phased out. Your mom's experience as a zero operator in the '60s must have been quite different too. Phones have indeed changed a lot! Thanks for sharing your memories and insights!

    This is a very well researched and put together video for someone who I assume is relatively new (I see you've been making videos for about a year on youtube at least) the only bit of constructive criticism I would give is to read shorter parts of the scripts and do multiple takes when needed. There are some parts where it seems like you're not quite able to keep reading at the speed you're talking at, it's something that is super minor but if you're in the video essay space many people will only be listening and that can make it more obvious. I think you have done a great job here and I hope that in another year or 2 I'll be sitting here going "I remember when she was at 583 subscribers, now here she is with 1 million!". Keep it up, I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!
