Railroad Spring Frog Operations
มุมมอง 40K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Railroad operations are complex. It takes a lot to keep a train on the tracks. What does it take to move a train into a siding? Railroad buffs everywhere know train operations and know it takes engineers to make things happen. Here is an explanation of how a spring frog works. Southern Railway for many decades operated a frog shop at the Charlotte Roadway Shop. Spring frogs were built out of ma...

    It would have been good to find and show an example that is in service. You are right about how the flanges move through he spring frog point, but without the frog guard rail that is always installed opposite the spring frog to catch the backside of the opposite wheel that keeps the flange from 'picking' the spring frog point and causing a derailment..

    I used to work for Canadian National. The CN main line, through Northern Ontario, is single track, with periodic double track sections where trains can meet. Spring switches were used to send the trains onto the appropriate track and then they'd open the switch, against the spring, at the other end. I was almost 50 year ago when I work in Northern Ontario and became aware of these switches. And yes, I meant meet. Trains were scheduled to meet opposing trains at specific double track sections and were not allowed to proceed until the opposing train arrived. IIRC, those switches were marked with an "SS" sign beside the switch.

    Thank you for posting a video showing just how terrible a ported barrel G21 conversion is! Clearly .460 Rowland stopped selling them for a reason and as annoying as the muzak is, seeing the outrageous recoil of that thing confirms how little "compensation value" is added by the ported barrel versus a real muzzle brake. So FEW understand HOW a muzzle brake works and that ignorance is fed by a swam filled with know-nothing experts and metooers who chime in with idiot comments like, compensators work more by the added weight than anything else. This is also why people get snookered by the ported barrel option which does something, just not what a true brake does. A proper brake has baffles inside against which expanding muzzle gas impinges forcefully to push the barrel forward before being swirled around proper chambers to be ejected upward thus removing gas from the stream going forward, further reducing back-push, and of course "thrusting" the muzzle downward. "Kick" is reduced because more energy is "gone" from the system before the slide ever unlocks. But brakes work best with HIGH pressure cartridges which is why when attached to .45ACPs they do pretty much nothing BUT add weight. They require high pressure, from large charges of slower burning powders that extend the pressure cycle toward the muzzle, and of course this is ideal for magnum power cartridges but of little value to tiny, fast-burning pistol charges in most handgun ammo. That IS the basic "genius" of the .460 Rowland that goes unnoticed by all the spring-changers out there who are shooting oversprung conversions with other negative tweaks and wondering why the guns won't feed! A ported barrel has nothing more than the tiny thickness of the barrel to act as baffles which adds up to pretty much nothing. The first thing you need to do to that gun is get a threaded barrel with proper muzzle brake and that recoil impulse will go WAY down!

      Agreed! A good comp also needs only but a 13-15 pound recoil spring. The 460R conversions with extra power springs are not right and to no surprise are problematic. Still, comps are not very reliable and require precise loads. I have a setup that surprised me and it is very reliable. I am using a rifle style brake with only top ports instead of all around. It is not as effective as the comps but is more consistent. I can further fine tune it with a spring calibration but it is still very reliable with a very wide range of loads. A 15lbs spring barely cycles 45aarp and cycles 460R level loads well enough but stronger springs tame the recoil much better but at minimum need +P loads. All around the Glock is soft shooting. There is no hard push in the palm from late unlocking and although case ejection can still be a little long it is still much softer than the stock setting. Its a keeper.

    Thank you, for this excellent explanation!! I was just reading the Environmental Impact Statement that was written, back in 2011, in preparation for the Charlotte LYNX Blue Line Extension light rail project. In the noise mitigation strategies, the report suggested spring-frogs near two UNC Charlotte buildings that would be sensitive to noise and vibrations. I can see, from your explanation of the required machining and labor time, why this type of frog would be more expensive. But I can also understand, now, how this type of frog would reduce the wheel squeal noise. Thanks!

    Why are there springs involved if the switch points are moved back and forth by a Manuel switch lever?

    • @whiteknightcat
      @whiteknightcat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The spring frog has nothing to do with the points. The spring action simply keeps the wing rail of the diverging track snug against the point. This closes the frog gap for the running rail, resulting in smoother travel and less point wear.

      Spring Frogs on a mainline run were void of gaps, therefore, essentially no added bump at the switch. The only bumps were with tangent 39' pieces of rail... at each joint. The drawbacks of Spring Frogs were light rail equipment... since they were not heavy enough to move that "spring-rail" and had to be craned over. Hi-Railers were other rail vehicles that were not to go through them as well. John Kamloops, BC Canada
