What Will You Say - Jeff Buckley Guitar Solo Lesson
Train your ear and learn to play the guitar solo for What Will You Say as performed by Jeff Buckley on the Mystery White Boy album (recording taken from a performance in Lyon, France 1995)
I recorded myself sitting down after listening to each section of the solo to demonstrate how to find what's being played. Experimentation is heartily encouraged as Jeff didn't play it the same each time he played it.
I hope you find this useful in figuring out the best way for you to play it. Get training those ears people!

Thanks for the tutorial! :)
No worries! Hope it's useful as a rough enough guide to get you rocking 🤘🏻let me know if there's any other maiden you'd like to learn!
Thank you so much for your Nirvana lessons!
No problem at all, they got me playing a thousands years ago and hold a special place in my heart! If you're looking for help on anything in particular give me a shout and I'll see what I can put together 🙂
❤❤❤
thanks Andy this is most helpful - excellent channel name too easy to remember
Cheers! Glad the video was useful!
Curious to know what tabs you used!!
I think this one is an Eli Gilbert tab. I joined his patreon at some point and downloaded the pdf from there 🙂
@ awesome thank you!
omg i love you andy played guitar why is played past tense does andy not play guitar anymore
When I started the channel I'd been in a parental wilderness for ten years not really playing much and the TH-cam channel felt like a good motivation to pick it up and play again 🙂 and most definitely does now play the guitar 😄
such beautiful chords and melody ❤ I love this song
It's stunning isn't it. He was a genius
Love how my man just gives the lesson like it’s nothin..love it, thank you so much 🙏❤️
Glad to be of some assistance! What else you learning at the moment?
We have the exact banjo model!!
Having played a bunch of other banjos in shops since I've been learning I can tell you we bagged ourselves a solid bargain getting this Epiphone. Absolute bargain of a banjo! 🪕
That voice is because of Vocal surgery, funny how you call yourself artist and make fun of other artists
I've never called myself an artist but thanks for commenting
@ lol
I'm.literally learning this now from Eli Gilbert... but only just adding the slide. I struggle with stopping my slide at the correct fret... I go too far. Lol
Awesome! I think he really nailed the pacing of his beginner lessons. You'll get the slide with practice, I've been playing maybe 18 months now, trying to get at least 20 mins a day in. It's exciting! It's still such an alien instrument to me, I was a fool to think it would be easy because I play guitar, they're very different beasts. And yet now I play more banjo than anything else. Great fun. Anyway, enough of my yapping! Keep going! Can recommend Bill Evans beginning banjo course on Peghead Nation when you're comfy with all the ElI Gilbert 30 days stuff, and Alison Brown on Artistworks is really good but too expensive for me. Good thing about Peghead Nation is the free trial too 🙂
@@AndyPlayedGuitar I find Eli's lessons extremely helpful. I started with jim pankey but he was simply moving to fast for me (got autiHD - so im a bit slower at learning stuff). I never played guitar.. tried as a child but my hands are small and dainty and I struggled to reach half the chords on the neck. Banjo is the first string instrument that Im really giving it a good go on... and i love it. Probably dedicate a good 20mins to half hour every few days or so. Always wanted to learn (I fancy myself as a louisianna hillfolk... just without all the racism and homophobia)and was massively inspired by Colton Crawford of The Dead South. If you haven't discovered the joy of colton crawfords banjo playing then you totally should... the man is a banjo beast and he streams on a regular basis on twitch playing banjo. Not assuming btw... but this video comes across as completely british to me 😅... I may be wrong tho. 😂
@josie50000 yeah I'm on the North West coast UK, so the songs they're teaching about the hills of west Virginia and so on is so far removed from my lived experience 😂😂 no cabins round here either! A lot of the lessons around start with "and you know this one from your parents singing it to you" and I laugh because, no sir, no I do not 😂 It's a tremendously fun instrument though. Keeping my brain occupied, bit obsessive about it to be honest! I have a friend who's learning clawhammer style which sounds lovely but looks too hard to me, I understand picking the strings even though it's taken a while to get used to wearing picks on my thumb and fingers. Thanks for the recommendation btw, I'll go check that out and have a listen 🙂
Great tutorial easy to understand and straight to the point I subscribed as well! Ignore bad comments, there are multiple versions for the song and you taught one of them 🙌 people will always find something to complain about…
Always a funny one putting stuff online, I just want to encourage people to play guitar cause for me, it's how I relax and it's an absolute joy! Thank you for your kind comment 🙂
Not the way ray davies plays it.
This song is such an underrated song
It is outrageously good isn't it. I'll never get over Chris Cornell's chord choices. Absolute magic
amazing didactic
wooow thanks for teaching and hey man really good voice.
Oh thank you! What else have you been learning lately?
need a full singing cover too, your voice is pure buckleyyyy
Very kind of you to say so! I'm not sure my skins thick enough to face the ire of the wider Buckley fanbase if I did that 😂
Great tutorial thank you so much for this!!!!!🤩
Ah thanks! Glad it's of some use! 🙂
Very good 😭😭🤧thank you so much
Best comment this week 😂
Great tutorial, keep it up 👍🏽
Thank you!
Could you upload a tutorial of all flowers in time
Sure I'll have a go at the weekend at recording something 🙂
Maaan, this is gold, thank you so much! Can’t wait to grab my guitar and get this in my veins 😁
Have fun and let me know how you get on!
Thank you! Very clear explanation 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Cool! Thanks for this!
This is great! Thank you, is it possible that you could also figure out that cool solo part that was played live before the last chorus? 😅
Had a couple of requests for that I'm going to try and get it recorded this weekend
@@AndyPlayedGuitar I had this one in mind: What Will You Say (Live at the Theatre de Fourvière, Lyon, France - July 1995) … this is the only one I found where he does it in that exciting rhythm, thank you anyways ❤️😃
@@this4455 oh okay, well I can still go have a listen and figure it out, maybe could cover both in one video to demonstrate variations and suchlike? 🤔
@@AndyPlayedGuitar yeah, that would be nice to play around with 🙂👍
Thanks couldn’t get that last part!
Hope it helped!
This good m8
Cheers! Still trucking away at it this afternoon!
Agreed
Could you please do a video on the ‘solo’ section please
Ah sorry, yes someone else asked about that and I'll try and do one this week!
@@AndyPlayedGuitar okay thank you!!
thank you so much andy i’m like so desperate to play this song i like need this
It's so damn good, let me know how you get on!
Just tuned my guitar I'm now ready to start thank you this a great tutorial 👍 🙌
Amazing! Let me know how you get on! 🎸🤘🏻
@@AndyPlayedGuitar absolutely 💯 🤘
I would recommend doing claw hammer on that banjo, or attach a resonator to it and then use finger picks.
I don't want to, clawhammer sounds beautiful but I'm learning bluegrass style. It's plenty loud enough without a resonator. I'm not playing on stages in the 1940s or with other people so I'm happy as it 😁
I also use open back I feel like it’s super loud still with the strings and bridge size I use but good pickin brother keep it up!
Thanks! I'm saving up for another banjo and I tried an open back with a tone ring a few months back and it was like a cannon compared with some of the closed back ones I tried. Plus I like the weight of the one backs too! Happy pickin'!
Thank you
Great video man, I love this song to bits! I think you may have made a few mistakes on the verse though. The biggest issue is that you want to be counting 8 beats, then 3, then 5 for the verse. It's counterintuitive right? It sounds like you're counting 8 then 4 then 4, which feels more natural but isn't quite right. And as a result the section that should be three beats long is misplayed. You can get a good listen to the guitar with the acoustic version on youtube. I found a guitar tab with, to my ears, accurate playing. Not sure if youtube is okay with links but it's the ultimate guitar "I Woke Up In A Strange Place Guitar Pro by Jeff Buckley" tab by the author happysad. Make sure you get the author right as there are other incorrect tabs on ultimate guitar. Also the tab doesn't mention it but when you're hitting that 79XXXX on the bottom two strings in the verse, slide up to it. Sounds awesome and it's surely what Buckley's doing. Happy playing all! Edit: also I like playing the 02020 without the low D, sounds cleaner to me personally. Not sure what Buckley's doing
Ah cheers! I'll go have a look at that, also had no idea there was an acoustic version kicking about out there so that's exciting. I've been in a musical/cultural/technological black hole for the past 11 years of parenthood and just emerging now 😂 my cd collection is...dated...to say the least. Thanks for commenting and the recommendation 🙂🎸🤘🏻
@@AndyPlayedGuitar Oh man, keeping up with guitar as a parent must be near impossible. Your singing voice is really good considering, way better than mine
@@_SmiIe_ yeah I kinda didn't play for a number of years and started this channel as an excuse/reason to pick it back up again when they got older and busier. I miss playing in my band though, those were the best of times ❤️🎸 just 3 like minded idiots making loud noises every week 😂
It's amazing to have the opportunity to learn Jeff Buckley's music thanks to you. 👍👍✨✨👌👌🥂🎸🎸🎸🎼🎼🎼😎. Saludos from Portugal 🇵🇹❤️🇨🇱. 🍀🥂✨
Thank you! I hope it helps, let me know how you get on! 😎🎸
Amazing version by Jeff but let’s not forget who wrote and performed this . The great band that is The Smiths ❤️❤️❤️
@@modmutha8608 I made sure it was in the title, but The Smiths, for a moment, were wonderful. Their respective post-Smiths output has sadly not worked for me! Clever guitarist Johnny Marr though, underrated!
Nice!
Спасибо мужик благодаря тебе я выучил эту песню спасибо тебе большое
aaaa yes i’m now working on his I know it’s over cover but i’ll definitely be picking up this one now!!
I started I Know It's Over a while back and should revisit it! Let me know how you get on!
you actually sing it really well
Oh thank you! I'd never dare do it out in public though! Just in my flat when the neighbours are out 😂
@@AndyPlayedGuitar yeah i get that🥲, i often get commended for my voice just to end up being quiet for the next few hours
@@clayscale I'm trying to get my confidence back and hitting open mic nights but Jeff B is off limits, I'll stay in my vocal safety zone (for everyone's sake 😂) do you write your own tunes at all? How long have you been playing?
@@AndyPlayedGuitar true, jeff is in his own league when it comes to the voice. i once bought a notebook and told myself "i'm gonna write great songs in here" it's been 4 months and the book is still empty. only been playing for about a year or two😅
@@clayscale Right, you have two weeks from today to write a song. Doesnt matter if it's crap, you'll have written a song, just write it demo it, then start your next one. your time starts... NOW!
Thank you for posting this I really love this song
It's one of the best songs ever for sure! ❤️🤘🏻🎸
hi! I really appreciate the video thank you so much for posting! is there any way you could post tabs for this with the diagrams that directly show where the fingers on the frets go? thank you
Hi! I'm afraid I've deleted the tab boxes I made on my phone but you could screenshot them from the video into a word doc? The tabs in the video are a rough guide, and you can roughly see which fingers I'm using in the video I think. So watch through and print screen or screen grab the different bits of tab? Sorry I've not got the tab to share in an easier format, I'll have a look at making something a bit clearer in future
Great, I never thought I would find someone who could also explain that great song by a great musician, Greetings from Portugal🇵🇹 from a guitar enthusiast who is Chilean 🇨🇱. 🤗👏😌🎸. When I heard the first chords I subscribed and gave a like 🙌🥳👍😃
Oh thank you! That's awesome! What else are you playing on guitar at the moment? 😃🎸🤘🏻
Milo Cyrus 😂
strumming patter?
I've just recorded a quick short on how I approached learning rhythm when I was starting out. I'll upload it later and hope it helps a little
