Hi! Yes I had bedside experience for 7 years. You don’t always have to have bedside experience to work in nursing informatics but it is preferred. You’re able to identify improvement in workflows that will benefit the nurses.

Hi! No, I’m not informatics certified but I do plan on getting certified. I first had to complete a certain amount of hours working in informatics. I do think it will make you more marketable. Also, I think CDI is a good transition as well because you are continuously in the EMR navigating through sections. Your experience will definitely help! We communicate with CDI often with the surgical documentation.

It depends on the institution. For nursing informatics, yes you need be a nurse. But, if you are in IT and want to transition into clinical IT I think that would be a smoother transition.

Hi! Hope all is well! The first thing you would need to do is get into a nursing program. Depending on where you live, you can go to your local community college. There are online nursing programs such as excelsior.edu and you can do your whole program online but would need to attend clinical sites that the school provides. Once you complete nursing school and pass your state boards, experience in acute care is preferred then you can start looking into nursing informatics. Most hospitals have a nursing informatics department.

The interview process was quick because I already worked at the hospital. Once I applied, HR reached out to schedule an interview. In the interview I got asked questions like, Why I would like to transition into informatics? How do I handle stressful situations and examples? What knowledge I have that will be beneficial to the position? 5 year goals? What experiences I’ve encountered that will aid in this new role?

Hmmm now that part I’m not sure of. But if you work at a hospital in UR they may reimburse you for your masters. I was a on a cardiac unit at my hospital when I obtained my masters and they gave tuition reimbursement.

Hi! Yes definitely! There are many online programs that allow you to work full time and attend school. Grand Canyon University was a good experience for me.

Hi! If your place of work doesn’t offer classes on your EMR system, you can look into obtaining your Masters degree in Nursing informatics. Or you can join the informatics committee if your job has one.

Hey! You don’t need a Masters but it does make you more marketable. Yes definitely experienced a pay increase from bedside to informatics.

I work 5 days a week. 3 office days and 2 work from home days. No weekends but if you’re on call day falls on the weekend or holiday then you’ll just have to be near your phone or computer to answer questions of the help desk can’t figure out the issue. Definitely good work and home life balance.

Congratulations on your MSN! Yes it’s a little difficult to get an informatics job. Have you ever looked on the American Nursing Informatics Association website? There are many jobs that pop up on there as well as LinkedIn. It’s good that you have gotten experience as a super user. Don’t give up, you’ll get there! 💕

It might be a little difficult but it’s not impossible! Look into Horizon insurance company. They are always hiring for utilization nurses.

Informatics nursing is the integration of technology and nursing. We work a lot on the EMR system by building, maintaining, and updating the application. A lot of time is spent on the computer but there are also opportunities to teach and educate healthcare staff members on new systems and products. I really enjoy it because it allows you to continuously use your critical thinking skills.

@@dopenursingish827 did you find it difficult to get an entry level position?

In my situation it helped because I transitioned from Utilization to Informatics in the same hospital. So I was already accustomed to the EMR system. Now, if you were to do Utilization and Informatics at 2 different institutions, it may not be as helpful. However, if you are in a Utilization role and wish to transfer to informatics, I think in the interview you’ll be able to use the advantage of being able to navigate different systems and quick learning. If you are fortunate enough to go straight into informatics that’s great!

Hey! 😊 I see a lot of health informatics jobs out there! I’ve only had a little experience with Epic but I hear that people love it. Cerner is good once you get familiar with it but some people find it difficult to navigate.

Nope not all. You don’t have to be a RN or LPN. You just need your degree in Health Informatics or HIM.
