Craftsman Chin: Building a Wooden Bicycle - Timelapse
Here is my latest wooden frame, Mark5 a commission from the company Ausfpa, who have asked me to design a wooden road racing bicycle using Australian timber, with the intent of showcasing the endless possibilities and applications of timber. The whole process took over two months, of which I have captured.
I hope you enjoy the video!

    Wood? Hardly organic. But I suppose finding a bike-shaped branch wouldn't be easy. Mostly glue and epoxy, but interesting just the same.

    His selling point is it's "sustainable" because it's wood? What about all those metal tools required to make it? 😆 Gotta match?

    I think it's a good idea to use wood instead of carbon fiber reinforced plastic which is much harder to recycle.

    Wood is not a good choice at all, and cost of trees is not good choice for them. It is like the CFLs energy saver bulbs, they claim they were greener but in reality they did more harm than the ok'd 100W bulb and then came LED true energy saver bulbs and it is the same for your wooden bike, how many trees will it cost and how safe would a wooden frame be when left in the back garden or shed.

    Hey ;) I got two points might consider while building your bike.. do as you like.. but: 1. The place where the cracks set is mounted is in high stress all the time especially if you are rocking up the hill.. If I can tip what brakes first on your construction it would be this place. 2. second the place you mount the upper part of rear fork makes it the weakest point of the tube and will most likely bend on heavy load. .. The seat post doesn't reach that point (I suppose) so the tube stays there alone. The upper part of the rear fork is constantly pushing on it from back side.. while the weight of the biker adds more energy to that in "ideal" angle stressing the tube even more there. If you take in to account that the lower base of the frame is severely interrupted by the crank set hub , meaning there is not much support from it the seat tube suffers even more. And so it will bend at that spot. ..and the frame will brake "again" where the crank set is mounted. As I said take it or leave it ;) it is up to you

    good concept this is the same reason skate boards are made out of laminated wood and no one questions why that hasn't transferred over to other things that need to be light and durable.

    Cutting down trees is sustainable if the forest is managed, and replanted.

    • @20alphabet
      @20alphabet 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steel is more durable and doesn't require deforestation.

  • @ReevansElectro
    @ReevansElectro 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    More sustainable? Cutting down our trees is sustainable? What is the true environmental impact of your machines to make the frame? Do those tools come from sources that have less impact on the environment? What impact does the glue manufacturing process have on the environment? Look at the big picture and learn about the real bottom line of your process compared to a regular bicycle.

    • @cheddar07
      @cheddar07 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly what I was thinking. As a neat project this is cool, but as a "replacement" unrealistic and potentially way more harmful to the environment.

    • @ReevansElectro
      @ReevansElectro 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right! Just because we all have something wooden in our homes means that we must cut down and use any and all wood we can for any purpose and claim that it is good for the environment. We must never reduce or eliminate our tree cutting practices.

      Robert Evans + you can use steel over and over again and a solid steel frame arguably lasts longer. 'sunstainable' these days doesnt mean anything

    • @leekazuya1305
      @leekazuya1305 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Evans i see where your coming from, and i respect your argument. however, if we compare embodied energy between wood and metal, metal production/recycle is much more energy consuming and the annual green house gas emission is off the chart due to the high energy requirement for industrial smelter (don't take my word for it do your own research). you may argue cutting down trees is a bad thing, however, the fact is that in many countries, trees are deliberately grown and regrown in plantations and natural environment. the consumption of raw wood can be recovered naturally in an acceptable time frame (a couple decades, usually 2 decades) with little to no green house gas emission (the little emission comes from harvesting vehicle and wood factory), while metal ore take millions of years to form naturally. bottom line is metal and wood manufacturer both has its environmental issues, but with greater demand of wood comes more tree plantations. even if the intention for growing these trees is to cut it down eventually, it still benefits the earth in some way, and i can not say the same for metal production industry. in terms of glue manufacturing process, i am not very knowledgeable on that field, so i really can't comment on that. hopefully you would consider my response as a valid argument. if your not convinced, like i said, research it and see if you have a change in perspective, have a good day sir :D

    it,s very beauty bike but i have two questions what kind of wood you are use, and what that material u but inside the wood, that black roll in the minute of 1:13 and for what? thanks very much for your replay

    • @zhengchin9287
      @zhengchin9287 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I used Arakaria, or hoop pine and blackwood, both are naturally grown in Australia. The black material is carbon fibre, I was exploring composite materials and decided I wanted to experiment with it. I used it to help increase the structural rigidity and lower the overall weight of the frame.

    Wow, so cool to see it take shape from sawn wooden planks into that beautiful work of art, lovely choice of wood colours too. Does the home cut beech wood ply fair better than the shop bought marine ply?

  • @petebarchetta2234
    @petebarchetta2234 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would love to get a copy of that A1 printout so I could build this, such a nice shape and so nice to see it take shape from pieces of ply-wood. How did you fix the drop-outs into the frame? As the ply will be horizontally laid, side clamping would have the issue of forcing the laminates apart.
