(the Cheap Drums guy) Todd Thomas
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ก.พ. 2010
I'm a regular guy, retired Military and picking up drums as a hobby. I will not amaze you or teach you to be a professional drummer, I am not capable enough to do so. I look at things a bit differently, see things others may have missed. How can I make the most of what I have? How can I add variety and spice to an otherwise cheap and forgotten set of drums? Never settle for anything. There is always room to improve- even the smallest of details. I'm trying to find my way around this instrument and while I'll do, hang around and listen to a story or even tell me one. I'm a beginner and hobbyist. Trying to stay relevant in this irrelevant world while avoiding the Wife and three needy dogs. People like us, we're the majority- cheap drums, blasé' cymbals, fulltime family, fulltime jobs. -My American dream
Converting an old 13" tom into a snare Pt.1
An old 13" Pulse tom tom becomes the next victim of mine when I convert it into a side snare. I may have to add some plys to the inside to thicken it up. With it being so thin, it may ring quite a bit.

Thanjs fir the reply Mr. Cheap Drum Guy. In reflecting on how I want to sound, once I start playing gigs out again, I decided I going to play much less hard. I purchased a little Jazz Drum kit that are micro sized. The cymbal sounds, that I loved the most and purchased, were much larger than usual... Ex, a used Istanbul 22" Ride Cymbal, a 17" Zildjian Crash. If I'm in a small ensemble, I use smaller movements & play ar a low to moderate volume. My crash cymbals are thin & open up quickly with even a slight but accurate glancing blow. So, I think that this cymbal setup will work out great. I can create a lot of interesting color with these cymbals while keeping my volume on the soft side but steady. Thanks!
Have a great day Dave and, Happy New Year
Thanks Todd. You have a natural sense of humor that just comes through. I found your Wuhan cymbal review really helpful & funny. Thanks again & keep up the great work. I just subscribed to your TH-cam channel & will checkout more drum videos. Happy Holidays, David-
Thank you David for the comment, I really appreciate it!
This video was entertaining too. Thanks.
Yes. These cymbals have a lot of sustain... very washy.
So, do you think that the Wuhan Linear Smash Crash cymbal would work well in light jazz music and Top 40 Music?
Top 40- probably but, as for jazz...... if it was struck lightly, it may..........
Thanks for this interesting video. I'm trying to confirm if a Wuhan Linear Smash Crash cymbal sounds bright and explosive or dark and smooth? I'm looking for a cymbal that blends well but gets in & out of the music quickly. Thanks Very Much!

Good day to you, Sarge. It is so good to have you back on another drum project. I can’t wait to see part 2, and I hope all is well for you and your misses.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
Who? Oh, whatsherface...... yeah, she was still moving last time I saw her.......
@ You, my friend had better watch what you are saying.🤪😜😵💫
@@gregwonhoff7161 I know I tease her a lot. When I was a boater, my best friend is from South Africa. He called his wife much worse! That in jest of course. I went to the Al Bundy school of husbandry.
@ I am guessing that you graduated at the top of the class. Well done.🤪😜🤣
@ I talk a lot of smack online, but I’m not that way in real life. I treat her pretty good. Hence the reason she’s still here.
Season's greetings! What a joy to see you back in the workshop. Those rim mounts for the Tom's are nice and stout catching 4 lugs. The Paiste's are, without a doubt a fantastic cymbal. I still use 900 hats, but the rest of my cymbals are AAX's, and their must be 12 different models of Sabian AAX line. I bought a gram scale to check cymbal weights. ( amazing results when all your cymbals are purchased used) I miss your theory on adding plies on the inside of the shell. IMO I do not think it will enhance the sound of the drum...but maybe it will. Seems like more work than what your finished product will give back to you. But being the " Cheap drum guy" is like a box of chocolate's....🤷♂️ We never know what we're going to get...EH'. I look forward to your next video and do not stress out if we don't hear from you until Valentines day, we're out here. ( picked up a pearl snare stand yesterday. The Griffin snare stand did it's job) Great news concerning your drum set that lucky kid acquired. Hope Michelle is well.
@@edwardkaminsky8142 hello my friend. I don’t know what is about the Sabians. When I put them away and put the others up for a few months, I liked the sound of them, but now I’m not a fan. So I don’t know what to do about that. I have a feeling I’ll probably sell the whole pack this spring, but like I said in the video, I’m keeping the high hats. If I sell them, I have my eyes on a 19 inch Paiste crash cymbal (Big boy), And probably a 16 inch or 18 inch China. I know I have never been a fan of those kinds, but mine is a 14 inch and China’s do not sound good until they are larger. Hope all went good for you this holiday season and happy new year to you buddy.
It's always a great day when I wake up to a new video from my favorite TH-camr! So yeah, 13 x 10, huh? Can't say I've ever played a snare of that size. I did have a marching snare once that may have been similar. I put a regular kit snare head on it, and it sounded quite unique. (This was in my early days; "unique" might have very well translated to "crap"). Still, I always love a good drum project. I dig your idea of adding a ply or plies to this one, but it sounds ambitious. Won't you then need to rework the bearing edges? That's one job I've never done. Of course, you're Todd the cheap drums guy (ungh!) so I bet you'll handle this with ease, skill, and grace. And you can bet that I'm here for it. Can't wait for more. Aloha! Oh, and don't let that Midwestern winter kill ya! If it makes you feel better, it has been a bit chilly here in the mornings lately. Yeah. Like low to mid 60s. It's rough, but we'll get through this. 😊
@@skfootit hey babe, it is great to hear from you again. As far as adding more layers to the inside of the snare, I would measure the distance between the bearing edges on the inside and cut the piece to fit so that would they would not even come close to touching. It definitely will need to be thickened up somehow or else it’ll just make noise and won’t sound like a snare. I’ve never done anything like this so I probably should at least try it once. Worse comes to worse I’ll be out 20 bucks. You never know, though, I could start a trend. Imagine that me doing something trendy…….. yeah right. The only reworking I will need to do other than glueing new layers in the shell would be to drill out the holes for the lugs as they’ll all be covered on the inside. It shouldn’t be too hard of a task. We’ll see, worse comes to worse I’ll just film another fuck up online.. I’m not afraid to show my mistakes. My whole life is built on them.! Hope you had a great Christmas and a better new year. God knows we could all use it.
So great to see you sharing the joy of drumming Todd, as well as a word of comfort and experience to a young soldier. ✊🏼 I finally got my brothers approval to buy my 3 and 5 year old nieces a drum set for Christmas. Needless to say I rushed right out and bought a little pink sparkle kiddy set and have been customizing it and tuning it ever since. 🔧🥁🎶👌🏼 I’m so excited to give it to them and start teaching them the basics!! Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas! 🎁🎄 🎅🏼
@@APdrums77 well done my friend with the purchase. Noisemakers are always good. What I suggest just before you leave is to get them hyped up on Red Bull and chocolate then, make your departure……. Yeah baby, that’s how memories are made.

@@CheapDrumsGuy hahah 😂 yeah their parents would love me. I was telling them the other day they must have been on the naughty list if their kids were getting a drum set. Cheers
@@CheapDrumsGuy also be sure to let us know how you like the G2s! They are my favorite personally, I go back and forth on clear vs coated depending, both excellent. I know you like a more thuddy controlled sound, so if they’re getting too wiley on you, just back off the reso head in very small increments until you get that concise thud you want. Just not too loose or the drum won’t be able to sing the note it was born to play. Good luck!
I just missed out on a full super olympic kit , affer agreeing with the seller they then decided not to ship ... bummed
@@scotttait2197 oh man, that sucks! Well, it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe there’s something better down the road!
Season's Greeting's Todd/ Michelle! So good to see you. You sound fantastic from the last few times we were able to share. It's hard to believe the snow is flying again. Great work with the Pearl kit. Sharing is caring, and YES, you do have too much equipmen, like you said, but passing it on to another individual to learn the art of Percussion is freaking huge. It is heartwarming to see individuals caring about the military, and your encounter will go a long way without a doubt. I was hoping to hear how your granddaughter is making out with the Percussion. ( Eva ?) Take care of yourself. Christmas was a time of having dinner with extended family and being thankful for what we have. Not necessarily what we need. Man made a mess of the theory and act of Christmas. The little drummer boy brought all he had...and that was a beat...music. Ra pa pum pum Happy holidays
@@edwardkaminsky8142 always a pleasure Mr. Ed. I love hearing from you sir. Thank you for all the kind words. I’m afraid Ava really hasn’t made much progress in regards to drums. I was hoping she will but right now she’s interested in doing some choir things at school so we’ll see how that plays out. Maybe it will lead back into the drums. So I go back to work tomorrow and my friend and his son has had two days to sit on those drums so we’ll see how everything is playing out with him. I have a feeling it’s really going to stick with him because he was really excited. Again, that’s great to hear from you Ed. Hope all goes well with you out there. Enjoy your time this holiday.
@CheapDrumsGuy 22nd will be one year in lessons. I am FORTUNATE. I wished I had a son to drum. Instead I have a daughter getting married next October...get this. @ pearl drums, and zildian cymbals? Bah! Well, at least he plays so that’s a good thing.. good for you and your lesson buddy looking back I should’ve done the same thing. I would be a lot farther along than I am now. Oh well should’ve would’ve could’ve.
Todd, happy holiday season from me to you, my friend. It is so nice to see you again, and I hope to be seeing more in the near future.❤️🙏🎄❤️🙏🎄❤️
@@gregwonhoff7161 Greg, my old buddy there you are. Well after dropping the drums off at his house the other day I found something here at the house that I left behind. It was that 13 inch Tom that I bought to go along with the pearl kit. If I took it over to him, they would have to spend more money to try to get a mount or other items to add it to the set so maybe it was better than it was here. Plus, it does not have a mounting bracket for a Tom arm anyways. What it does have sitting next to it is a spare snare throw off that I have. A pretty cheap one off an old Ludwig snare. I still have 13 inch snare batter heads from that old sound percussion lab one that got scrapped last year so if I convert this tom which I think is a 13 x 10 into a snare, it might be something pretty cool. So I think my next video will be building a simple snare out of a Tom.
@ Well, Sarge, that old green army set is my favorite. I just love the paint job you applied. Also, you are a very kind man for giving that young lad a quality set to begin his journey with.❤️🎄🙏❤️🎄🙏❤️
@@gregwonhoff7161 that one turned out pretty well I wish I would’ve done it to a better drum set though
🤘
Thats great that the Pearl kit went to a good home! 🎉 The G2s should be a lot beighter and probably slightly more open. BTW i tried out Attack ThinSkin 2 heads. Actually quite a nice sound!! The coating seems to chip off kind of easy. At least on my floor tom. Maybe I got a lemon because the rack tom is fine. Anyway, big difference from the Proflex. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Todd! You and yours. 🌲☃️🎅🏻
Spagz! Yeah, I don't know what's up with those Attack heads. The Red Dot snare head is number one in my book but the others are questionable. I had the same chipping issue but yes, they still sound good. You and yours have a great Holiday season as well buddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you using a SPL Lil Kicker 10 x 4" Snare Drum?…
No, that's the original 13x4 snare that came with the kit. (it has since been scrapped)
Poor mans recording custom
Premier drums are very underrated in my opinion, I think it’s brand thing and I am guilty of this myself. I’ve never really been drawn to the name or the red P. My first kit was a blue oyster Ludwig looking kit, with the aluminium 2000 snare snare drum. A fantastic kit in hindsight I didn’t appreciate what I had. On the subject of your APK, I very clearly remember speaking with Charlie Morgan at one of his clinics and he recommended the APK kit to me. I never got one, but it stuck in my mind and your video reminded me. I now have a Premier series in red sparkle lacquer, a remarkable looking and sounding kit that was designed I believe or at least he was involved by Steve White. My favourite drummer by the way is Rat Scabies and he’s a Premier player or at least was and I was always drawn to his drum sound I
@@jarrahdrum thank you for the comment. I appreciate it. One thing about that APK it is very loud and has a very distinctive sound. I really like that kit, and I would never think of getting rid of it.
How is it after 1 year? I read few bad reviews on Amazon.
It has held up fine. Like with most things, you can expect to tighten a nut every now and then. As long as you keep an eye on everything, it should last you. My slave developed a squeak of sorts but a drop of oil fixed it.
@CheapDrumsGuy thank you.
@@lafaina79 You're welcome and thank you for the comment
Hey I actually have another question, I was looking around the web and I stumbled in your pedals but before that I was going all in in a Tama basic model, the HP30. Same price but 1 chain and the frame look skinnier than yours. Now, should I trust the brand or try those? What's your take?
@ a lot of brands don’t even make their own gear these days. I could look up five different drum company’s and show you the same exact pedal. Only thing is they just change the foot plate now this has been true with Ludwig, pearl, and several others I have seen. Even the brand new premier pedals are made by whatever company that is. My double Griffin pedal looks to be made by the same people who made my D drum single pedal. It’s pretty decent quality, heavy duty and I think it would be a lot better product than the Tama pedal. Of course, you are going to pay more for the name Tama. Like with anything, you have to perform maintenance on everything. Every so often check all the screws. Check all the bolts check all the linkages. I’ve heard people complain about this pedal saying that it loosened up on them after they took it out of the box. When I took mine out of the box, I tightened everything and I have not had to re-tighten it yet. The nice thing about this double pedal. I don’t know if you remember from the video, but it gives you extra parts to convert the slave pedal into a regular pedal. That’s what I really liked about it because if my D drum pedal fails I have two Griffin pedals now to replace it with or for back ups
Excellent video❤

Hey Todd! Glad you're doing better man. Just my 2 cents... I'd leave the kit the way it is for now and see if she takes to it. If she ends up getting into playing drums seriously, then maybe you venture down the road of taking off the wrap and putting in the work of making it look nicer and all that. If not, then, you didn't waste any time or effort at least.
@@Jakers80 well you’re two cents makes a lot of sense actually. Even if it came apart easily and it was easy to get at the shells without having to remove all the glue residents It still is a lot of work. More than I wanna go through right now. I have enough gear to have two complete sets set up down there so maybe the next time she comes over we can have a little impromptu jazz session and go from there. Her dad is in construction, so who knows maybe he’ll want to work on it together with her as a little project one day.
@CheapDrumsGuy Ahh, that sounds like a plan. I'm sure the 2 of them would have a blast taking off the wrap and cleaning up the shells and blah, blah.. but, worth it in the end. I also think the black hardware and stained shells would look really good together.

Trying to find some new music to go over also as I’m getting tired of playing the same thing. I’m delving in some strange territory with some of this music. @CheapDrumsGuy Ooh, you've piqued my interest. Tell me more about this new musical territory you're exploring. I love to know what my friends are listening to/playing.
@ i’ve been listening to a lot of zydeco music lately. About 10 years ago we were up at a Creole restaurant called Pearls New Orleans kitchen up in Elk Rapids Mi. It was during fat Tuesday and they had a zydeco band in there and I thought that was just the funniest most entertaining evening I’ve had a long time. By playing along with the downstairs, I am using my brushes more and getting comfortable with those - a lot of fun.
@@CheapDrumsGuy Nice. I get a kick out of zydeco music, but I can't say I've ever played along. Hmm. 🤔 And my brush work is absolute garbage, if you ask me. I should work on that.
I commend you on the experiment. I might have misunderstood but I thought I heard you say you hammered the cymbal the day before making this video. I've read (and my experience has supported this) that about a week is needed for the metal to rest. When I've hammered cymbals they sound 'dead' for about a week. Also with cluster hammering I think the ballpeen would have been much better. And finally... it puzzles me that you'd mix bright sounding Paiste B8 cymbals with darker sounding B20.
I see now you have a newer vid on this cymbal. I'm going to go check it out
@@jmb92555 I searched and searched and searched for my ball peen hammer, but I could not find it at that time. It wasn’t till just today that I found it a lot of good that does me now . Ever since I first made that video I have found different things I should’ve done when I pounded that cymbal. I told my wife the other day that I was actually debating on whether or not to buy another one of that exact cymbal and re-create the video using the now learned techniques. What’s done is done though. It is one of the better sounding effect cymbals I have. And, as far as mixing the Paiste and the Sabians together, Sometimes it all depends on the list of songs I am playing that week. Each brand seems to go with different types of music a little better and by mixing the cymbals I can re-create more music without having to be constantly switching entire sets out. I really love my Paisties. I am so glad I initially bought those as they are just the absolute best sounding cymbals. I’m also quite happy with the Sabians. It’s nice to have the two complete sets to go back-and-forth and add so much to this hobby of mine.
