We decided to take a half-day trip down the main Thames River downstream of London, Ontario - rain or shine. It rained for most of the excursion but there was no lightning, and it was warm. It’s such a picturesque section of the river as it flows through Carolinian forest, however it was uncharacteristically ho-hum fishing on this day.

This canoe trip took place in the Kawartha Highlands in Ontario, Canada. Over the course of 3 days and 2 nights, we paddled 5 lakes and negotiated 5 portages up and the same 5 on the way back. We enjoyed two different backcountry campsites. The weather was OK as we did have to deal with quite a lot of rain. We were pleasantly surprised by the low numbers of mosquitoes. Here’s a little vignette of last night’s TRAA Fishing Evening. Urban angling in a beauty spot near the University of Western Ontario.

The Rio Ñireguao is an intimate stream with a depth that averages below your knees. It also has large brown trout, in numbers, that love to eat a well-presented hopper pattern! On this day, the challenge (especially for righties) was throwing a decent cast in the 80km wind. However, if you can get it done, you’re rewarded by 20”-plus behemoth!

My buddy Stan wanted me to put this up on my channel so that it would be publicly available for all to view. He and 9 of his closest friends took a bush plane into Esnagami Lodge in northern Ontario to fish for trophy brook trout and northern pike, as well as walleye and the odd whitefish. Looks like they had a lot of fun… and fish!

Normally I just buy my rod bags. They’re usually so inexpensive, it’s not worth my time to make one. However, the latest rod that I built is an uncommon size, so a proper bag was unavailable for purchase. I also came by a sewing machine when my aunt died so this project gave me an excuse to teach myself how to use it!

This is the last video of those to support the rod building course that I’m teaching. It’s a super-beginner course so many don’t want to invest in expensive equipment. Enter the DIY Rod Dryer. This is more of a template for you to change a you want. Think of it as a recipe that you can change ingredients and preparation to suit your needs and resources.

This is another quick video to support the TRAA rod building course with which I’m involved. Some of the participants were having difficulty anchoring the smaller guides to the skinnier sections of the blanks in preparation for the thread wraps. Hopefully this video helps. It might help to pause and take screen shots for reference if you want to give these methods a try.

I’m doing a free rod building course for the TRAA and did up a quick and dirty video of a couple of ways to both start and finish a basic thread wrap. There’s also bonus demo’s of a couple single trim wraps - one edge banding and the other inlaid. It’s pretty basic stuff but it’s what beginners need to practice before they can start trying all the other fancy crap on TH-cam, lol!

The Bowfest has been happening annually for over 30 years. While the numbers of guys has dwindled since the “covidian epoch”, those that still participate have a great time! Big shout out to Stan and his strap-on GoPro video footage!

Yup, another egg pattern. But this one has been designed for those days when the water is high and dirty, which happens a lot during steelhead season. This is not just for fly fishing, centre-pin anglers will also find this effective under a float. It’s big, it’s bright and it gets down in heavy current.

Tip-top replacement is the most common of all fishing rod repairs, and the step involving the removal of the tip-tip is usually where it all goes wrong! In this video, I share a simple, damage-free and almost foolproof method for removing the tip-top from a fishing rod.

My buddy Rick and I dreamt up a solution for the mucky conditions inside my hunting blind. What we came up with was cheap and portable, will keep my stuff somewhat clean and should stop the chair from sinking in the mud!
