Acura TL 2002 - Part 3 - Vinyl wrapping old car - KPMF white pearl "Aurora" and blue purple "Nebula"
มุมมอง 4023 ปีที่แล้ว
Another short slideshow overview how I wrapped my old Acura TL 2002 after some preparation work has been completed. The paint has been flaking and chipping after nearly 20 years and the body has been prepared previously by me for wrapping. The vinyl you see is KMPF white peral matt "Aurora" and blue purple gloss "Nebula". I chose KPMF as it is a bit thicker than the common vinyl wrap brands the...

    What temp should my heat gun be at to heat wrap?

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what works best for you + your surroundings. I have mine usually mid hot. If you have to heat a larger area you need it hotter, other wise it will cool down before you can heat up everything. For post heating you need to check the recommendations of the brand you use. They all have different temp. Avery i.e. is somewhere between 175-196°F.

  • @Monkey_D_Luffy56
    @Monkey_D_Luffy56 ปีที่แล้ว

    About heating, does the temperature from a steam on a boiling water would work?

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. To make it more pliable, yes. Usually you can use steam at the end to get the finish as perfect as possible. Or a heat gun, or torch (for the self healing effect). Some vinyls need a post heating which needs temperatures up to 200° C or more (post heating is recommended always). But just to help with stretch you can even use a hairdryer. Not as efficient as a heat gun but it will definitely help.

    Can i wrap surfaces that are textured? I want to wrap my Motorcycle meter but it has a textured finish on the plastic. Im wondering if that will diminish the life of the wrap and if it may start to peel over time.

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends. A lot of plastics are difficult to wrap because they tend to be to 'rough' in a sense of low surface energy. Like car body parts for example (those black plastic pieces like door moldings or interior trim pieces with this little texture to it etc). Some plastics 'gas out' over time (that's why they get brittle, they fade, black turns grayish, red turns pinkish). In those cases the vinyl would get air pockets and probably undo at one point. You need to try. I have wrapped fairing pieces on motorcycles and so far there have been no issues. If it sticks well from the beginning I would give it a try.

    Is this the kind of vinyl you use in a cricket cutter? or the type you use to wrap a car? Or are they both interchangeable? Just wondering because I've never seen someone wrap with a crafts vinyl. If it is, that's cool because I really wanna try this.

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      You can cut actually all vinyls with a cutter. I am using here specifically wrap vinyl but you have a point. ( another video idea :)) As for the differences of the vinyls itself: Wrap vinyl is designed for vehicles or anything that will also be exposed to the elements. It is thicker than regular vinyl (talking still microns though) and has air channels in the glue (makes it easier to avoid trapping air underneath). The thickness also allows for more stretch. It is more durable generally speaking and has a longer lifetime and less 'self shrink' over time. Now, lettering vinyl and craft vinyl can also be used to 'wrap' something. It is the same material BUT those are thinner. Hence stretch is limited before it discolors. And those have no air channels. This makes it difficult to wrap dry since it is very easy to trap air. (There are exceptions though. Oracal has lettering vinyl with air release.) Lettering vinyl is available for outdoors and indoors. Difference is lifetime. And how it was produced: Cast or calendared. Craft vinyl is usually calendared. It is meant for indoor usage and has a shorter lifetime (but we are still talking years). And biggest difference is the shrinkage. Calendared vinyl shrinks over time on its own much more than cast. But there are wrap vinyls that are calendared because they have a nicer finish... So baseline: You can wrap with any vinyl just need to know the limits. Without air release a wet application is better but this makes it difficult when heating to soften and stretch it. But the behavior is the same. When heated it gets soft and really stretchable and when re-heated it will always tend to go back to its original state.

      @@vinyl-witch Thank you for the information and going Into great detail, I really appreciate it. I looked forever for an answer. I honestly just wanted to know if I could wrap the cool looking vinyl sheets with all the holographic colors you see online. But I guess it's not made for that. I just want heat and wrap random small items of mine, just to give them more style like you did here with this mouse. So my best bet would be to go specifically shopping for "wrap" vinyl. Got it 👍. Thanks again

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@namelessvermillion8188 Oh, those holographic ones are very special. These are polyester based, they do not stretch at all and if they do (with heat out of hell) usually it breaks the holo-effect, they get wrinkled and don't shrink back or separate layers. They are good for flat surfaces or if you like to swear a lot ;) A nightmare literally. Unless you make a pattern with a cutter, by reducing the total surface to small pieces (if this makes sense).

      A good point to add to your techniques of breaking the memory you could also instead pre shrink the vinyl then stretch it this was your technically stretching the vinyl back to it's original state when stretching and this works because almost all vinyls will shrink from their memory state a little bit not a ton but it works and it's a nice little trick.

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, pre-shrinking is another way to do it. It works best with polymeric (calendared) vinyls though as cast doesn't shrink much from its "delivery" state. I will try to make another video on that technique, too. I just can't find the time.... but I will :D

    I used Vvivid on my first wrap project, my 370Z and it appears similar in handling to your vinyl. Was very thick and rigid and very difficult to cold stretch. It also loves to fold up and create those fingers or crows-feet fingers that you can never tell if they will squeegee nicely or crease up requiring removing from the panel and heat to remove. Pretty difficult to use and kind of wish I went with a more forgiving vinyl.

    • @vinyl-witch
      @vinyl-witch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vivid behaves indeed quite similar. The best way is to warm it up a bit, you will see that the tension will ease out and you will find it easier to squeege. I try to 'glass' vinyl out when laying it when possible. If you have to feed it into a deep recess you do that and then you warm it up and glass it for the rest again. Best is always to try with a small piece to see how it behaves. Less trouble afterwards when you are already on the project.

      @@vinyl-witch Yeah I 'finished' wrapping the whole car but want to re-do the bumpers, hood and probably the roof at some point. I have a lot of spare. Just redid the mirror caps - ended up removing them so I could tuck them cleanly but it was a lot harder having the caps loose and not able to stretch very easily to form it around the complex curves. I might have to use some scrap and find stuff to practice on. I don't have a garage so do it outside so have to wait for days where it's not windy and its not too cold or hot.

      I am happy you could manage it :) We are in the middle of moving but I will make more videos. As fort the mirrors the same concept applies, you just have to go really pretty hard on the vinyl since you need to go further around. But sometimes it is better to work with 2 pieces as it will guarantee a better durability. So if you have a body line to go with, do it. Another way would be to pre-stretch and then shrink back.

    KPMF is a VERY bad vinyl. It's really sad, because they have awesome colors, but their quality is really crap. I've seen high end cars (six figures) with the original paint that had to be resprayed after KPMF film destroyed the paint only after a few months. Not to mention the huge difference in color from roll to roll.

      I can't say anything to that so far. The new material I got was as expected in terms of "no hazing". I also worked with their regular cast material for decals and it was Ok. Next year I will probably re-wrap my car and then I will se what will happen. I actually doubt that the glue destroyes the paint in any way unless the paint job was low quality (the price of the car doesn't say anything about the quality of the paint job in my opinion). I know I will have lift off of clear on my Acura, it is a 2002 after all, and I did not sand it completely.

      @@vinyl-witch Unfortunately the glue destroyed the paint because it simply wouldn't come off. Polishing wasn't an option and nothing would dissolve the glue. I'm talking about a Ferrari here, so we can't question the paintjob.

      @@toshy I am really surprised and sorry for your experience. I am in this business since nearly 20 years now and never ever had issues with vinyl affecting the surface underneath. With no brand. The worst I ever had was 3M which was just so old that it litterally fell apart in tiny brittle pieces, seperating from the glue. And then yes, removing the glue from the car was a damn mess and took forever. Had to use tons of glue remover basically softening the glue to a glibberish mess, scraping it carefully to blotches and taking it of. And you can always question the paintjob, especially Ferrari, no offense. Ferraris are known for this. Sportscars in general have a very thin layer to reduce weight compared to "regular" cars.

    Sooo, after getting another 13 yards with the same issue (this time I tested with a smal sample beforehand) now I am waiting "patiently" for a new roll directly from KPMF USA with the clear glue backing. The mystery remains what the problem is, probably aging.... ...but next week will reveal if I am cursed or not. It is a bumpy start with KPMF but I have to say that the support of my supplier and the service from KPMF USA are great. :)

    They must've sent you the wrong material, the sample looks much better than what you got. The areas that weren't stretched look good, hopefully I can pick a good vinyl for my car

      I have on the front "Aurora matt" from KPMF. It is beautiful and covers even tiny stone chips perfectly. So I think I was just unlucky with the Nebula. But so far I like the material. It is thicker, therefore it will also "protect" a bit better. Also absolutely no glue lines and no glue pattern visibility, totally cool. And the price is really good. On my motorcycle I have Avery, it is beautiful but I can see the glue pattern and some bigger bugs damaged the vinyl already on two tiny spots. We will see how the new material looks like. Need to get this finished.
