Philadelphia's Rasslin Radio on The Jerry Lawler Show w/Carmela Panfil & Joel Goodhart (1987-08-02)
The full episode can be viewed on KrisZ891979's channel here: th-cam.com/video/mkmNereGuGw/w-d-xo.html. I extracted and merged the Rasslin Radio segments so that this is easier to find for those looking for source material on Carmela Panfil, Paul Panfil and Joel Goodhart. Their segment is preceded by a brief interview with New Jersey's John Burzichelli of Independent Media Marketing, who was promoting his VHS tapes at the time and had a working relationship with Rasslin Radio.
Some history:
On July 5th 1985, a retail store focused on pro wrestling opened up just outside Philadelphia called The Squared Circle, occupying a stall in Levittown PA's I-95 Marketplace. Two thirds was owned by Carmela Panfil, a friend of the business all her life, and her husband Paul Panfil, a superfan with global tape trading connections. The rest was owned by their insurance agent, Joel Goodhart.
Paul contributed as a silent partner while Carmela and Joel managed the storefront. At some point within that first year, Carmela and Joel started a radio show together called Rasslin Revue on WTTM out of Trenton NJ. They discussed the latest wrestling news, had guests, took live callers, and ran contests. By September of 1986, WTTM had merged with WDTV in Philadelphia and Joel and Carmela's show was renamed Rasslin Radio. Joel later said that the name was meant to "distinguish from the bad wrestling down at the Spectrum." Carmela wrote the entire show, sometimes staying up "until 4 or 5am" on Saturday nights finishing it up.
The pair amassed a dedicated audience and established their own Squared Circle fan club. They'd hold local charity benefits, host guest wrestlers, and even organize fan trips to events around the country including Starrcade '87 in Chicago, Wrestlemania IV in Atlantic City, the Third Annual Crockett Cup in Greensboro, and the Memphis loops. Here they are as guests of The Jerry Lawler Show along with some members of their fan club on the morning of August 2nd 1987 during one of their organized excursions.
Carmela, Joel and the Squared Circle fan club were sometimes featured by Jim Crockett Promotions at the Civic Center for "Rasslin Radio Night" events in which members of their fan club would get ringside seats, Carmela would work as timekeeper, and Joel would guest as the ring announcer. So when WDTV signed off as a radio station on July 25th 1988, Joel was able to arrange for the show to be aired instead on Philadelphia's premiere sports radio station, 610 WIP. Rasslin Radio debuted there on September 3rd 1988, airing 8am-9am every Saturday morning. It became the third most popular Saturday morning radio show in Philadelphia, drawing 22,000 listeners per quarter hour according to Joel.
One of the most notable events during their time on WIP occurred on April 30th 1989 in the Philadelphia Civic Center's Plaza Ballroom, when Ric Flair attended their banquet to crown him Wrestler of the Decade as voted by Rasslin Radio listeners. To commemorate the event, Joel Goodhart commissioned a custom belt from Mike Vartanian that said "Rasslin Radios Wrestler Of The 80s" which was presented to Flair. There are a few photographs from the banquet floating around. I've heard that Joel actually commissioned two belts, with one on display at Carver Reed Jewelry & Loan at 10th & Sansom for a time.
It wasn't long after that Joel quit the insurance business, opening Ringmasters Wrestling School and running his own shows that would become the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance. One of the minor financiers was the owner of Carver Reed and listener of Rasslin Radio, Tod Gordon. They held events all through 1991, but by January of 1992 Joel had sold his slice to Tod who went on to form Eastern Championship Wrestling before selling it to Paul Heyman in 1996. This was the origin story of ECW.

I was talking to my wife maybe 15 minutes ago when, for the first time in maybe 15 years I used the word "induce" in casual conversation. Five minutes later, I said "induce" again. She looked at me like she was about to ask if I was having a stroke, which I wasn't (knock on wood). And five minutes after *that,* I was showing her this incontrovertibly apt Kids in the Hall sketch. (Was this sketch really and truly incontrovertibly apt? I dunno -- but I *do* know one thing: She sure as shit didn't controvert it!) Anyhow, blah blah blah, etc., etc., and now here I am, X number of minutes after all that horseshit, writing this horseshit to you incontrovertibly estimable folk. The moral of the story: I hope my wife puts out tonight -- I'm randy as a billy goat on parole.

This commercial brings me back to my youth. I was 13-14 when this commercial aired in 2002-2003. I had no idea who the band was at the time but loved the song and feel of the commercial. 1-2 years later Modest Mouse blew up and I bought their album Good News. After a few months of non stop listening I went with my dad on one of our weekly trips to Fry’s Electronics and saw The Moon and Antartica and Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks. I bought The M & A and was super happy and surprised when I got to track 2 and Gravity Rides Everything started. Fond memories..

Funny you mention Foetus. Good call. Yeah, Thirlwell was a fan. He hand-picked all the bands on his '92 Mesomorph Enduros comp, which included Barkmarket's debut of Johnny Shiv. The bands toured Germany together, too, in the late summer of '96 along with 7 Year Bitch and Otis.

I’ve wondered the same. Maybe it was used for early live shows? In an August 1987 issue of New York magazine, Barkmarket is on the bill at Performance Space 122. I can imagine this video being projected on the wall or something like that. We’d likely need D. Sardy for the real answer though.
