I feel the reason it has started to feel lacking is a shift in priority in the eyes of modders. They all focus on balance. Older versions of minecraft had *WILDLY* unbalanced mods, and it was up to pack devs to slot them it. Take for example Project Ozone 2. There was extremely op gear that you could get quite early on that would break normal progression, but there were also exceedingly powerful enemies to fight. The big mods like Avaritia aren't needed anymore because we don't have big enough threats to bring need to it. Our threats are not big enough, so it feels stale.

I've never trusted that creepy little boy in weight, I didn't think he's a good guy at all. Sure he might seem to be helping but wasn't he the one that led Boyed to that well where he got the worms? I would not call a lot of the mods I play with particularly Vanilla+ even in modern versions. Large tech modpacks are not very common anymore because a lot of those large tech mods just aren't being updated to modern versions anymore, and most people who get into modding new versions just aren't interested in making those mods. You will fine tons of non-vanilla friendly mods, Exploration and Combat mods are very popular right now - Alex's Caves is a pretty good example of that. Not to mention, a lot of users hold the mods they download up to VERY high standards. There might just be tech mods exactly how you like them, but you might not ever find them because they don't present themselves well enough to you. There is nothing wrong with the way mods are these days, IMO. These are just the mods people want to make, the ones people show interest in. I might just be different in this way, but I never really found the appeal in a lot of old school modpacks, personally. Very few of them ever appealed to what I like, namely combat.

Orespawn is starting to come back in 1.16.5 with the new mod Chaos Awakens, but it's still pretty early in development.

To preface, I don't make mods. But I can't imagine needing to remake mods every time a new major version of the game releases is any fun.

Mod developer here, older versions of Minecraft didn't have a lot that defined itself as "Minecraft", hence why Devs could do whatever they wanted. In modern mods, Devs feel compelled to stick with what feels "Minecraft", an example is the Pillagers, a lot of new mods opt to rework or expand upon the pillagers, whereas older mods would add a new faction with high quality models and 128x128 textures. Another reason is the rendering changes, in the hay day of modding, the renderer allowed for a lot more freedom with stuff such as auras, flames, and lasers. The new renderer is much more suited to handle block models and 16x16 textures. All of this is from my personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt

The reason is simple. Mojang incompetence. We've had several updates that completely broke modding and killed off waves of mods. You want the most passionate mods, go to 1.12. You want to use create and maybe two boring mods? Play current

Open blocks is not forgotten it's one of the most staple mods for modpacks.

As someone that doesn't have much time as i was younger i feel i can't really play big modpacks, when i was younger i couldn't play without industrialcraft and thaumcraft, chest upgrades etc... but nowadays the packs that are still alive with similar themes are so big and overwhelming and i don't really have the time and energy to read through books just to have a bit of automation. The best experience i had with modded minecraft was a server i made with friends that just had a couple of dungeon mods + better end. Easy to understand and not overwhelming with information.

I just want another mod, that gives me the same vibes as Taumcraft for newer Versions...

I miss Buildcraft, Industrialcraft, Thaumcraft, Tinker's Construct...

Terraria mods doesn't feel like this specially to anyone who plays Calamity or Thorium

We've got an anthology of tech mods that all roughly do the same thing. I miss the days of Orespawn devs snorting a 8th of crack-PCP and adding stuff that had no business in a balanced environment. Creeps And Weirdos devs adding an entire world of cartoon characters and a gem kingdom. Things that add ADVENTURE to minecraft instead of realism. Dimensional Doors is one of the only mystery mods of MC that still exist today

Out of the one's actually abandoned, I'm noticing a trend. Their too broad, and thus in the time they could have been updated, a few separate teams instead went ahead and focused on a key aspect, and ran with it. The reasoning they were abandoned is the lack of focus, and no more is that evident than your first example. If you wanted any of those features, like gliders, why would you not install a mod dedicated to it and other movement mechanics over the grab bag solution? You wouldn't.

I think PopularMMOs is probably a large part of why a lot of people still remember the Morph mod. He's certainly why I remember it, I was always excited to see what new mob he'd morph into

Agreed, there used to be so many war and gun mods, mixed with the npc mod and you could make ww2 re-enactments. I do also like vanilla+ mods kind of because they are less complex and can add a lot to a world if you want something more mincrafty, another thing is because a lot of those crazy mods could be somewhat complex, I tried galacticraft and I had no clue how to add oxygen to a base, and i had to watch a whole tutorial on how to use npcs. I do hate the dweller mods though, they are all just slop copies of each other.

Been doing a 1.7.10 hbms nuclear tech playthrough, and its still actively updated constantly, and they cant go more than 2 weeks without adding a bunch of new stuff. I really recommend it for people into tech mods, its a full fledged tech mod not just nukes and stuff.

Honestly I miss Extra Utilities and Thaumcraft the most. 1.7.10 Thaumcraft had some of the most engaging magical research out of any minecraft mod I've ever played.
