The Best of British Steam Trains 2024
2024 and what a year it's been! Certainly one of my most travelled years capturing mainline and heritage steam across the country, from the Cumbrian Hills to Devon and from Kent to Yorkshire here is my Best of British Steam Trains 2024 edition, featuring 96 shots over 77 minutes of non-stop steam supreme from the mainline and heritage railways including the East Lancs, Mid Hants, Swanage & Bluebell, with a few unuploaded shots included!
This year has been notable for a number of reasons, on the heritage scene new build projects have entered service and several railway successfully pulled off from spectacular galas, some were indeed record breaking and once in a lifetime
The mainline scene has been very different, a contrast to previous years has seen nearly all of West Coast Railway's fleet locked up whilst the ongoing Central Door Locking saga with the ORR continues, managing WCR's steam operations this year has been down to 34067 'Tangmere' and a trio of Black 5's mainly 44871 roaming the network, a scene that looks to be more prominent in 2025
Locomotive Services Group on the other hand have dominated the mainline steam scene with a wide variety of locomotives and routes covered its no surprise that the majority of mainline steam feature LSL motive power as the company grows from strength to strength
Vintage Trains & DB Cargo also remain as valiant steam operators with a small collection of certified locomotives at hand for their operations
It has become widely accepted that nearly all mainline steam operations include a diesel at the rear, usually for insurance, assisting at destinations and assisting the steam engines at the front, whilst it’s very far and few inbetween a small minority of steam hauled trains have been unassisted and have made for some sought after sightings
This year has seen the return to steam of 35028 'Clan Line', 60163 'Tornado', 34059 'Sir Archibald Sinclair' and most notably 60532 'Blue Peter' but sadly the year waved goodbye to 46100 'Royal Scot' 45690 'Leander' and 45231 'Sherwood Forester' for the foreseeable future
Next year looks to be hopeful with the mainline return of 34028 'Eddystone' as well as 71000 'Duke of Gloucester', 5029 'Nunney Castle' and potentially 6024 'King Edward I'
Highlights of the year for me personally include 5043 and its unassisted run both ways over Shap, 60007 at speed on the ECML, 70000 and its return to the Great Eastern Mainline as well as a stint on the "Golden Arrow", the extravaganza of 8 Bulleid Pacifcs at the Swanage Railway, the weekends spent on both the East Lancs Railway & Bluebell Railway, the return of 60532 and of course the jaw dropping performance of 35028 devouring Upton Scudamore on an unassisted Pullman train
A lot of this compilation wouldn't have been possible without the continued support from Jack Pallister & Thomas @themodster for both their kind offerings and assistances for making these chase days/weekends away possible, as well as the usual gang with Edward (EH Steam Videos) & Sam (Flyin9 Scotsman), cheers a plenty lads!

Great set of catches. Good to see home too. I grew up at Bentley Heath, it was our playground. I remeber steam, four track main line, two goods loops and a siding, looking south. Northward (ie brick bridge) there was also to crossovers from up relief to main, and down main to relief, and semaphore signals, all controlled from a wooden signal box nestled inside the foit bridge agains the up main. Happy days 👍👍👍👍

A great achievement to put this locomotive onto the mainline, it’s former stamping ground so to speak, but you can’t get away from the almost..’space age’..environment it’s in, welded rail, even the station lighting is modern in comparison to the sixties for instance, surrounded by modern materials etc, the system is so called..‘rationalised’..now as well with the absence of yards and pointwork as well, but the sound of the pressurised steam at work is still very stimulating and was the norm back in the day, evey half hour or so almost 24 hours a day!!!!

Absolutely & amazing video of 70000 Britannia in action on the Great Eastern 👍👍 I was wondering what was on Britannia as it looked like it was a bit of wire from the overhead was on the top. Good thing there wasn’t any damage to the loco on that part of the tour. Oh, do you know that Britannia is visiting Robertbridge this coming weekend for the K&ESR 50th anniversary event? I can’t wait to see the loco there this weekend.
I was just too late for steam on Stratford as by the early 60's it had gone fully dieselised, however, I once did see a Britainia at Liverpool Street in immaculate condition of course!
The irony is that the 'modern traction' , at the back, the Brush 4, is little more than a decade younger than the Brit.
Another magnificent presentation of this wonderful and precious. Locomotive. Many thanks for your sterling efforts in bringing this to us on YT.

I note Sir Nigel seems to be handling this load at speed almost in mid-gear! Had it been on the Fast through Hatfield, that would have almost exactly matched my last sight of an A4 in BR service. Almost ... that A4 was filthy, well after the official end of KX steam, probably early 1964, and I was sat in the back of a Cravens unit, having for some reason been let out of school early that day.
