Those Athearn's are really a mixed bag with what you get. Econami was the standard on RTR (now Athearn line), but now it looks like some have Tsunami2. Also, I noticed that the newest releases shown at Yankeedabbler have air piping on the trucks for the brakes.

Running trains is infinitely more enjoyable than making French fries, even if the pay is less😂 Love your video content and the patter that comes with it. Could watch for hours! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

As to weathering the new loco - don't! Looks fine just as it is. Seriously I'm not a fan of weathering at all. The dullcote takes care of what it needed to.

Going old school! Love the Espee. Watch out you may be adding on to your layout to haul sugar beets to Dyer(Costa Mesa)! 😊

I applaud your decision to do a split era! I’m a late 80’s SP modeler, but I will stray a bit into the early 90’s.

Rick: when you weather your new tunnel Motor may I suggest that you go. “lighter”, by that I mean put a couple of drops of white or light gray paint in some dull coat and try to replicate the sun faded look that so many SP locos had. Don’t go with another dark or black weathered unit…… mix it up a bit.

Nice choice on the new power Rick. The 40T-2 is a surprise I would have never guessed. I was thinking you might have looked at a Kodachrome GP9E to pair up with that first Geep 9. The Kodachromes (SPSF - Shouldn't Paint So Fast) started showing up in 1984 and several GP9's got that paint. The post Rio Grande acquisition of SP, thus the speed lettering as on the 38-2, began after 1988, give or take a few weeks. The UP or 'The Borg" as I think of them, absorbed the SP in 1996, on Sept 11 of that year. Seriously, I love the SP power showing up in your videos, it reminds me of the good old days railfanning the Santa Ana Branch. The old bloody nose paint is my favorite, even though I remember black widow as a kid, my primary focus as a fan started in the early 1970's and BW was mostly history by then. Lots of things. like kodachrome and speed lettering, I used to dislike, but they both have grown on me in my old age. Heck, if it's SP its okay by me.

Very nice addition. Now maybe a Western Pacific "pool" power unit pressed into temp service on occasion while the others are away for their routine maintenance.

Coincidentally I also randomly ordered an Athearn SP Tunnel motor- mine came yesterday- liking it so far and might switch from N to HO

Loving the new tunnel motor!! Do not disappoint and go sparingly on the weathering. To this midwesterner, the beloved SP was know for being dirty and grimy, particularly the tunnel motors. Fun fact; in the early to mid 90s, SP power would often runthrough Lansing Michigan on then Grand Trunk with an auto rack train in the evenings on Thursday’s. The variety of SP locomotives was never disappointing. What’s more, all of the new EMD power that came out of London Ontario passed through Lansing Michigan on CSX trackage. So we got to see a lot of the southern Pacific GP60s in the speed lettering scheme when they were shipping new. Usually 3 or 4 new builds behind CP Rail SD40’s or Alco’s.

A new SP loco? Looks and sounds great so far. Looks big enough to haul longer trains to Orange by itself.

You need to save your $$s for the C415 Alcos coming from Bowser. They lived at LosNuts and are the coolest locos. Period.

that's awesome Rick, the Southern Pacific lives on! well in HO scale. I recently bought a GP30 or GP40, weathered too at a train show in Garden City Idaho, looks great too. I'm interested to see what this new and beautiful locomotive can do in future vids, keep it going.

Anything coming after DCC is going to be even more complicated.

I would leave the faded out numbers alone on the other side of the cab.

The SP started the speed lettering in March of 1991

Rick I'm going through the soundtraxx tsunami2 decoder reference manual and they have some different cv numbers they use are different than what you have in the spreadsheet. Example: CV 29 is meant for the speed table which should be 0 if ur gonna use CV 2, 5 and 6

The layout always seems to amaze me because most the time, you do have enough room. Sometimes barely but it always seems to work. I know after all the years you've operated it your very familiar with what does and doesn't work so I don't think it was all preliminary planning int the original track plan. I'm starting to get more familiar with what your doing with the card system and therefore starting to 'warm' up to it. Great job as always and very enjoyable.

Please don’t change your videos. Everyone has their own opinion. My opinion is that I like the way you talk to us as you are filming. It adds to the videos and I like hearing your plans and updates as you are operating. Yours is my favorite channel. Thanks!!
