How did this gentle old man inspire such SHOCKING films?
This was originally going to be one of my extremely long videos, probably 2 hours or so in length, but I decided I needed to tone it down a bit. No idea if this video will find an audience, if it does, I'd love to dig into this topic further. Ideally, I'd love to do a video about the true crime and serial killer movies, and then I'd love to do one on the se* comedies/movies (yes, I've had to censor a few things here, trying not to get the video de-monetized and thus receiving no views).
One thing I think I would have liked to include in the section about Run Run Shaw was his consistency in wanting to give his viewers whatever they wanted. As Godfrey Ho says in the video, "this was the selling point of the movies, this is what the audiences wanted." when referring to the cinematic violence. There's a great story in a book called Ask For the Moon by Meredith Lewis (I found it after writing the script/recording the audio for this video) where it describes how the Shaw Bros. put on a play in their earliest days and when one of the leads came on the stage, the physical stage broke underneath him and he fell below. The audience laughed so much, thinking it was part of the show, that the next night the Shaws made sure that the actor fell through the floor again. His idea was to give the viewer what they wanted, and if that meant buckets of blood... so be it.
Also, one little correction (sort of)... When I say in the video "recertified for video" in reference to Triads: The Inside Story, I mean it probably had a cinematic (meaning shown in theaters) recertification BEFORE it hit video. The video market uses a different rating system than Cat 1, 2a, 2b, and 3. While what I said wasn't inherently wrong, I could have worded it better and I only thought about it upon 4th rewatch!
A brief synpopsis:
This video focuses on what the Category III rating actually is, the history and landscape before it, and it also takes a look at the first local Hong Kong film to receive the rating, the first Western/foreign film, and the first from mainland China. Hope you all enjoy it!

Your editing is absolutely insane man. Some of the best I've ever seen in a video essay. What do you use to edit?
The best film channel by a country mile out there! Cannibal Holocaust is my favourite.
Thank you so much for the kind words! And indeed, Cannibal Holocaust is at the top of the list. Hope to return to some Italian horror before too long!
Absolutely brilliant video and work! 🙂
Thank you so much! It is greatly appreciated! This video started off to a slow start, but over time it has gradually found an audience. I hope to make more Italian horror videos in the future at some point
I would sooooo absolutely LOVE to see a series of Category 3 films as you've suggested. I've been watching Hong Kong films since 1998 and two of the very first I ever came across were The Untold Story and Naked Killer. HK cinema overall is fantastic, but some of the best titles I've ever seen are Cat 3 films like Portland Street Blues, Sex and Zen 2, A Day Without Policemen, Crime Story (debatable), Intruder, Election, Exiled, and The Underground Banker.
Right now I’m working on the next video, one focusing on kung fu actor Jimmy Wang Yu (who has one of the craziest stories out there), but after that I’ll be heading back to the world of CAT III. Probably a video about the violent movies that exist in the genre and one focusing on the sex comedies and similar films.
Bruce le also played a villain in an Indian Bollywood movie th-cam.com/video/nraYntn_JBc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kdLH15Amd1TpEqCU
Absolutely unreal! This is my first time seeing this. It looks like Bruce Le had to have done the fight choreography as well.
Supermen villain is none other than ‘Betty’ from kung pao enter the fist 😂
Indeed it is! The incredible Lung Fei, a true Superman of the acting world :)
It's in a strange little bunch of movies where you have a great first film, a so-so second. And then something very interesting for the third. Like this one, Exorcist (though I kind of love the insanity of the second one in the series), Halloween, Jaws (I mean, Jaws 3D was a spectacle :D) Not many movie series goes that route. But it is fun when it happens and sequels surprise us.
Although I think the first film is probably the best solely as a pure work of art, I absolutely have revisited part 3 more than probably any horror sequel I can think of
Will DEFINITELY be looking forward to that Laura Gemser video - she to me is THE Emmanuelle!!!
She is an absolute legend and I hope to one day getting around to that video, it’ll be one hell of a deep dive!
Unbelievably underrated channel. I got sucked in by the Ti Lung/David Chaing piece, and now I'm binging every every video.
Wow, thank you so much. It takes a while to get these videos out there, as you may see from the release dates, but they’re done with a lot of research, a lot of editing, and the hope that people enjoy them. Thanks so much for watching! Working on the script for the next one currently :)
I first saw the Untold Story back in the year 2000, that movie left me totally speechless and it was based on a real life story.
For my eventual video on the “case file” movies, the disturbing cat 3 shockers based on true events, I have written blurbs for several of the real life cases- including Untold story. Hope to go into the real life events when discussing these movies!
But what if cannibalism is a metaphor for human exploitation, so when he asks who the real cannibals are maybe it’s the western audience using their money, earned through an economic system that ruthlessly exploits the resources and man power of the global south, to create demand for this genre. The real cannibals is you the viewer… and the Academy Award goes to Ruggero Deodato 😂
Who knew, maybe cannibalism was the friends we made along the way? :D
Guangzhou is pronounced Guang "Joe"
Hey, thank you for the pronunciation! As a Southern American, I’m still not sure if I speak the English language correctly at this point, but I do my best! :) Will keep this in the back of my head the next time I see anything that ends with “zhou,” will at least google to find out if my pronunciation is way off base or not.
Hung Yan Yan doubled for Jet Li in the Once Upon a Time in China movies.
I did not know that! Clubfoot rules! Man, I need to revisit the Once Upon a Time… series.
Ti Lung and David Chiang have appeared in two Wong Fei Hung-related movies. Ti Lung played Wong Fei Hung’s dad in Drunken Master 2, the sequel to the famed Drunken Master movie featuring Jackie Chan. As for David Chiang, he played Lu Haodong, a colleague of Sun Yat Sen who’s played by Zhang Tielin (he would be also famous for his role as the Tianlong Emperor in My Fair Princess) in Once Upon a Time in China 2 which has Jet Li portray Wong Fei Hung.
That is an awesome little factoid. Like six degrees of Wong Fei Hung :) thank you so much for watching and thank you again for the little connective piece of trivia!
I remember Sex and Zen lololol.
Peak cinema! :)
I imagine a parallel universe where you released the long form video titled "I Watched Every Hong Kong Category III Movie" similar to the Italian Cannibal movie. Love the video as always!
That was originally the plan! I was going to do another two hour video, but honestly, when I released that Italian Cannibal video it took a long time to find an audience. It hurt too much seeing something that I worked so hard on get little to no views. Most of my audience has found me via the Bruceploitation video and other Asian cinema interests, so I just don’t think they were as interested in the Italian cannibal stuff. Thankfully, over time, it has picked up a little steam and has been seen by a decent audience, but both it and my Exorcist 3 video kind of made me re-evaluate things. I decided I needed to focus in on my subjects, not take as broad of an approach. I also wanted to deliver more story focused videos that have a bit more of a human element. I was actually worried that this video might not have an audience, considering it’s not really kung fu related or anything. But thankfully I’ve got a great reception to the video and I hope that it will carry over into the next ones as well. Right now, I’ve already started work on a Jimmy Wang Yu project, so that will be first thing, but soon after I’ll return to the CAT III world and explore more of the deep cuts.
@weirdcinemashow As a fan of weird/genre films, I look forward to it! I stumbled on your channel a while ago when I was looking for a video on the Godmonster of Indian Flats, and I'm glad I found your channel! I feel like it covers a wide variety of genre films rather than just a copy/paste generic horror channel that I see so often. I really like this look into broad subjects, but also deeper cuts into Asian cinema! The story focused videos rule man, I look forward to the Jimmy Wang Yu video, and whatever ventures you take in the future! Cat 3 or not!
Friend, you got it wrong the 1st part. They move from Zhejiang to Shanghai to Nanyang aka Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Then, they produce cinema here. P Ramlee is their most famous series. They produced a lot of famous Malay movies. Shaw had 2 amusement parks here then, Great World and Gay World. Later, then they moved to HK.
And Lim Chok Tong's Genting amusement park might be inspired by Great World and Gay World, with the addition of casino..
I’m actually reading a very good book called Ask For the Moon that gives a detailed view of the Shaws. I want to think it covers the move to Shanghai and the area you refer to as Nanyang. I just sort of skipped over some of that stuff to get us into Hong Kong. Indeed, I agree, I could have given more detail on those early days of the Shaws Bros. In fact, a lot of that is important to the mindset of the Shaws Brothers studio - in particular, how they focused so heavily on giving the audience what they want. For the sake of this video, that mindset is important to talk about because it points out that if bloodshed was what the audience wanted - he delivered it! At some point, I think I want to tackle a video specifically on them, but that covers a LOT of ground as I’m sure you know. Thank you for all of this information. The amusement parks and their work outside of cinema is usually glanced over here in the west. I’ve BRIEFLY heard about them, but never knew the names of any of them. Great information!
@@weirdcinemashow Thanks for your reply. Coz Leon Lai and Nadia Chan actually Chindo. Lot of HK stars actually M'sia or Chindos actually. Lots of HK porn stars actually M'sia or Chindo bro.
The Shaw Brothers were those people you knew about. They really put the action in cinema. I need to get my hands on their bluray sets.
The Shawscope releases from Arrow have been amazing! I also really like the Shout Factory “Shaw Bros Classics,” they have all been quality. I am so thankful to see all of these movies getting such high quality releases!
The Shaw brothers had been only a hint to me until this video. I'd like to learn more. Thanks
Awesome, thank you for watching! In my last video, the one on David Chiang and Ti Lung, I went into a deep dive on the Shaw system. My next video should have a lot of interesting Shaw-related information as well!
This was an awesome and well-made documentary! Thanks for all the great info contained here! I have about 2/3 of these films, but you've introduced me to several I need to track down. Time to re-watch and make a list! A documentary about Bruce's final 24 hours would be incredible to see, too!
Thank you so much for watching! Yes, I plan to make a video about Bruce’s final day! Working on a few things, because I think I need to have more 3D skills for that. I want to cover it with all of the new things I’ve read about Bruce and his life. Also want to kind of go over the things that I got wrong in this video and sort of issue a correction on those. For this video, the Bruce Clones were my sole focus and where I was doing my research, but if I had researched Bruce Lee a little more I would have had an even stronger delivery.
@@weirdcinemashow I don't know why I didn't think of this, but a late entry into the American Brucesploitation category would be 1985's "No Retreat, No Surrender" where the young hero actually trains with Bruce Lee's ghost! I was lucky enough to see a live MST3K riffing of this one!
Steve McQueen and Bruce Lee had similar beef. Like Ti Lung said, it's a business. Directors go the way of the money. I was surprised to see Ti Lung in A Better Tomorrow. I thought his career was gone forever. Ti Lung is a one trick pony, while David Chiang is a more diverse actor.
After reading Bruce Lee: A Life by Matthew Polly, it was interesting how Bruce and McQueen had this weird competitive relationship. So much that McQueen, who was his close friend, basically refused to help him in his career because he didn’t want to help anyone become more successful than him. Can’t imagine that sort of competitive spirit when your buddy is just trying to get a leg forward.
Of course Run Run Shaw didn't produce movies when he was 106. He did it when he considerably younger. But never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
Reiko ike❤
She’s the queen!
Thanks for the suggestions. I've been meaning to watch more Japanese movies. When it comes to Japanese cinema, I have mostly only seen some Chombara films from the 50s and 60s, sleazy exploitation films from the 70s and 80s (mostly starring Sonny Chiba and/or Meiko Kaji) and J-horror during its boom. I don't have much experience with crime films from the 90s and 2000s.
Thank you for watching the video! I kind of came into my own with Asian cinema right around 2000, and in Japan, crime films were all the rage. The crazier they were, the more we paid attention. Unfortunately, the game has changed so much in recent years that I feel like a lot of these movies are overlooked now. I’d love to revisit this topic again, because it’s something I could talk about for hours on end. Right now I’m sort of growing the channel, but if and when the audience is open to it, I’m definitely going to brainstorm ways to talk more about all of this. I’d love to do a bio on the Japanese filmmaker Sabu, for instance, or Takeshi Kitano for sure. That’s a given. One of these days!
Well done. Subbed & notification bell activated.
Thank you so much! I am trying my best to get the videos out as frequently as I can, but you can imagine how much work these tend to be as a one-person operation. Thank you for ringing the notification bell, because I drop these videos basically as soon as I’ve done all of my quality checks on them. I get impatient right at the end, lol!
Human meat BBQ pork bun is the legend.
Hopefully will cover all of the Untold Story movies and their associated ripoffs in an upcoming video :)
I’d love to see a future series on Cat III stuff.
It is in the works! I know I have at least two more videos in me that will expand and explain lots of historical stuff. I definitely could do more if I’m just covering the movies and such. My very next video is going to be about Jimmy Wang Yu, but soon after we will dive right back into the world of CAT III
I'm not really a fan of 70s kung fu movies (I'm more into the 80s and 90s ones) but I love John Woo's 80s gangster movies. So I associate Ti Lung with A Better Tomorrow (and Jackie Chan's dad in Legend of Drunken Master)
That's how I first associated him as well. Big fan of those movies too. It wasn't until later that I started to dig deeper into the Shaw Bros. catalog and found this whole other phase of his career.
Please do a series on Cat 3. These movies deserve the spotlight they never ever get in the west.
So, my next video is probably going to be about the oldschool kung fu legend Jimmy Wang Yu, but afterward I think I'll be making a video about the world of True Crime and brutally violent CAT III films. I have another project brewing in the background, but either my big project will come after or I'll move directly into the CAT III sex films right after that. So, at least two more CAT III videos to come. Thank you so much for watching and sounding off in the comments. I was afraid this video wouldn't do well and there would be no interest, but I'm definitely going to deliver now that I've seen people are interested!
@@weirdcinemashowI love to see it!!
Sex and Zen was quite highly regarded in the 90s here in Australia in art cinema circles, and in the 90s art and international cinema was as close to mainstream as it ever had been. It wasnt quite "the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover" or even "tie me up, tie me down" but it was mentioned in the same breath.
That’s pretty amazing. When I think of Sex and Zen, I think of it as a broad sort of comedy. However, there’s no doubt, it’s a beautifully shot film and one of the best CAT III rated films I can think of.
Some of these titles are crazy lmao, like...."raped by an angel" wut???🤣
It gets crazier, there’s a fourth movie in that series: Raped by an Angel 4 - The Rapists Union And indeed… they do form a union
I'm not a fan of Category III films, but I've seen a few of them. I will say, the ones I watched were well made. You would expect these movies to be very low budget with terrible acting, but no it was all good. I'm surprised you didn't mention the infamous Red To Kill! That is one messed up movie! Great video, btw!
Red to Kill will be featured in one of the follow-ups to this video, for sure :) I’ll probably do one on the more shockingly violent films, then one on the crazy sex movies. So, Red to Kill will definitely get its due, it’s one of my favorites. Messed up indeed.
@@weirdcinemashow Cool! I will definitely keep an eye out for these videos! 👍👍👍
Why ever would you use that photo in the thumbnail? Jared King sez hello!
Lol! Gotta put the Yip-tease up front and center! But in reality my first thumbnail featured the woman from Men Behind the Sun having frozen water dumped on her hands, but I thought it looked too grotesque. So, I moved from putting something violent to instead putting Amy Yip doing her thing :) And hail to the King, baby!
"Raped by an Angel" is one of the funniest movie titles I've ever heard of. And it sounds like it would have gotten the Type III rating just with its title and (presumed) theme of the plot, even if the movie itself contained no graphic depictions at all. Someone should make a sequel called "Sodomized by Satan" or "Fingered by God" or something.
Even better, there are multiple sequels, but the 4th movie has the best title: Raped By Angel 4 : The Rapist's Union. What a world, what a world, lol.
@weirdcinemashow I don't know which is the funnier concept behind the #4 movie: The fact that there are multiple angels who go around performing this particular crime, or they were all so oppressed by their employer (presumably God or Satan) that they decided to unionise.
17:19 what? Nana noo
Lol, Godfrey Ho sure loved splicing his 30 minutes of Richard Harrison footage into as many movies as he could. Harrison didn’t seem to like it as much.
Yeah i dunno if i believe the cat story as well, there was a lot of movies in that era coming out of china that seemed to disregard animal cruelty/safety. Like a kung-fu movie I watched decades ago, the special effects were meh, but the scene where the protagonist accidentally kills his german shepard dog trying to hide him. The body looked suspiciously very real for movie filled with very apparent fake effects. Then he ate the dog as kinda a "funny" ending to the sad incident. Him eating the dog... lets just say i've seen the photos of dogs being eaten in the area and that cooked dog looked VERY real. In fact it's after this era where the no animals were harmed during the making of this movie started popping up on films many years afterwards. Which is still bs, Disney accidentally killed a lot of puppies for the airbud puppies films, and they STILL put that disclaimer at the end of the movie. So not that disclaimed means much in present day as studios will use legal technicalities to put that on the film regardless of real life events.
I believe that Kung Fu movie was Shaolin Temple, right? I need to go back and watch. It does strike me as improbable that they had a dog trainer on set for such a low budget kung fu movie - BUT anything is certainly possible. And yeah, I really don’t know what to think about the cat scene. That’s why I blurred all instances of it, in case it ever comes out to actually be proven to have been real. I mean, I don’t think they’ve denied lighting all of those rats on fire in the movie, but maybe internationally it became more of a big deal that a cat was harmed? But, again, who can say, perhaps it really is just syrup and maybe the cat did just get tuckered out after wrestling with the rats for so long.
That movie was The Shaolin Temple starring JET LI. I always thought it was a stuffed dog, since in another scene, you see a baby lamb/goat get speared and it was totally a puppet! Though yes, there are other movies with animal cruelty/violence (like the one where Beardy rips a live bird in half!).
I, fortunately, saw SENTENCED TO HANG during its Melbourne Chinatown release, and nabbed the amazing poster (which is better than the film itself). A very early Cat-3-level horror/actioner was Dennis Yu's THE BEASTS, which is rarely mentioned. Made way before the rating existed, it ranks as one of the most explicit, crazed HK films I've seen. For me, other notable Cat-3's not broadly distributed in the West are BLOODY BEAST, A DAY WITHOUT POLICEMEN, LOVE TO KILL, TRILOGY OF LUST 2. I remember seeing the latter TRIADS poster on the theater wall (white room).
That is awesome, man! The Sentenced to Hang poster is the awesome blue-tinted poster with the Wolf hanging at the end of a rope? That would be great to own! And I agree with your choices, especially Love to Kill and Trilogy of Lust 2. Man, I had forgotten about ol Julie Lee and what a crazy story that is. It will have to come up in one of the next videos. Have not seen The Beasts, that is definitely going to be on my list of flicks to check out. A lot of those proto-cat 3 movies are a blind spot for me.
John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.Repent for The Kingdom of Heaven is near, believe on The Lord Jesus Christ, God revealed in the flesh, who died on the cross and rose again on the third day to to save you from your sins and the judgement for it, which is hell which we all deserve, but while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, believe on Him ans who He is, get baptized in The name of The Father and of The Son and of The Holy Ghost, recieve The Holy Ghost and walk in God's will for you.
Thank you for the blessing on the video, much appreciated :)
Are there any specific websites that sell these films?
No specific site. You could check places like MVD Shop or Diabolik DVD and then search Category III and Category 3 to see what you can find. There are definitely an armload of films released on Blu-ray so far, but a lot of the films just aren’t easily available anymore. In recent months I picked up a few HK Blu-ray’s from DDDHouse.com.hk and those have been great. Stuff like the yu pui tsuen films which no one has released in the west. You can also double check with hkmdb on any specific movie to see whether or not it’s a real CAT III film. Like Taxi Hunter is called CAT III in some of the Blu-ray advertising, but was CAT 2 upon release.
In Cantonese, we called it as "sam kap pin"
That means “Category III”? Thank you so much for watching!
Awesome Video dude...would love to see more stuff
Thank you so much for watching, will be working on it!
I LOVE these films!!!
David Chiang worked with Ti Lung's son Shawn Tam in a TVB drama called Big Biz Duel
Dying to watch Hong Kong Godfathers. The trailer with that sweet machete action looks sooo good! 🎥 Might have to watch on Internet Archive. Great video!
If you’re talking about the one from 1985, it’s a great, great flick! Excellent cast, story, and action. It was a sort of precursor to CAT III, but the violence definitely points it in that direction. Not sure if it was ever certified and under which rating, maybe someone else can chime in with that info!
Let's have the cat 3 deep dive plz
It’s coming :) thank you for watching!
Nice video. But "the west" is not a monolith. Also Bruce had to go back to Hong Kong because of 1960s Hollywood racism. Not the popularity of the Green Hornet. Otherwise good job.
Thank you for watching! “The west is not a monolith,” what did you mean by this? And what is it in reference to in the video? And no doubt, Hollywood racism was a huge part in Bruce’s return to Hong Kong. However, Bruce did try to knock on those doors previous to the Green Hornet. In 1964, he reached out to several of his former contacts in Hong Kong trying to see if there was any interest in signing him, but he heard nothing back. He even saw one of his former co-stars on the beach one day around that time and she completely ignored him. In 1960, when The Orphan was a bit of a surprise hit, Shaw Brothers were trying to sign him due to its success, but four years later, with him having been stateside and HK having heard nothing about him, he was essentially forgotten. It wasn’t until 1970, when Bruce got a call from a random Hong Kong radio station, that he had an inkling of his growth in popularity. Then when he visited Hong Kong a short while after, while trying to get a visa for his mother to come stay in America, he found the Green Hornet to have been a huge hit. So yes, if Hollywood wasn’t so racist, they’d have known what they had with Bruce and he’d have been a huge star and Bruce wouldn’t have needed Hong Kong, but if it weren’t for The Green Hornet, Bruce wouldn’t have had the popularity to spin off into his successful Hong Kong career.
Hey, firstly I would just like to say what an amazing channel you have, there are not many TH-cam channels out there that take as much time and dedication, or go into any depth or detail as yours does, the time you take to compile all the clips and much appreciated (add what said clip is at the bottom) keep doing what you’re doing. I love this channel, and when I saw this video on CATIII films I couldn't believe it, I myself have been a huge CATIII fan for many years now, ever since I saw Sex & Zen and Naked Killer for the first time all those years ago. And since then, I have tried to seek out and source more and more titles ever since, although we are very lucky now, with a lot of boutique labels now releasing more and more CATIII titles. But there are still very few TH-cam channels that talk about them, and how amazing they are and what a true treasure to the golden age of Hong Kong cinema they are. So much so I have even thought about starting a channel myself, but just haven't found the time at the moment. but maybe... So, as for some of my favourite Category III films, Ebola Syndrome (or anything with Anthony Wong), Eternal Evil of Asia, Escape from Brothel, Daughters of Darkness, 3 Days of a Blind Gril (Anthony Wong again), Hong Kong Godfathers just to name a few, I could go on and on lol. To answer your question yes I would love to see a series on Category III movies, and even more one done by you I think that would be awesome especially being a subject you can go very in depth on, I would love to hear more about some of your favourite titles and some more obscure ones that are never brought up or talked about.
Thank you so much for the kind words, and thank you for watching! I honestly didn’t expect this video to do very well, assuming the subject was too niche, but so far it has done very well. I have an idea for a Jimmy Wang Yu video that I feel I just have to get done (have already sourced three different books and am about to start on the script), but I think as soon as I’m done with that, I’ll be back to the world of CAT III. There’s so much to talk about in this area. Obviously, I want to talk about the crime and shock movies, I also want to talk about the crazy sex movies that are way off the radar, but I also think this would give me an opportunity to talk about the VCD and VCD culture in Asia at the time. I also think I can get into the world of Triads and how they influenced Hong Kong cinema in general. They were heavily involved in some of the bigger movies out there, but many say they controlled a lot of the cheapie CAT III movies too. So yeah, still a LOT of information to talk about. In fact this video was going to be another one of my 1-2 hour videos, but I decided to cut back because it was just too much and tackling things one by one would give me the opportunity to release more videos per year.
Totally awesome! Thanx
Thank you so much for watching, glad you liked it!
