Strawberry bed cages | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE
Strawberry bed cages | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE
In this episode of Mrs. Rattlecan's House I build a set of protective cages for the strawberry beds..We have a problem with critters. Varmints. Mamillian ner-do-wells eating our strawberries before they can be harvested. So I build a pair out of 1x2 western red cedar, chicken wire, and use pocket hole joinery. Lots of lessons learned along the way so BE SURE TO CATCH THE HELPFUL HINTS AT THE END OF THE VIDEO if you're working with pocket holes in thin, soft woods.

Washer Machine Blues | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE

Washer Machine Blues | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE Our 13-year old washer has given up the ghost. I should be able to troubleshoot it (I did, mostly) and get a replacement part (I did, but the wrong one) and then get the RIGHT part (unavailable) then get a replacement to slide in the place of the old one (too tall) so I revised the cleat holding the folding table which made it a different height to ...

Winterizing a backflow valve | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE Winter is coming! Big storm front approaching our location and we need to take care of a couple issues before the temperature drops. One is to protect our nice new (replacement) backflow preventer valve on the irrigation system. Even though we blew all the ait out of the irrigation system we want to prevent any damage to this that we can so ...

Changing (some) of your mower's oil- Easy Change oil filter system | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE My John Deere S130 lawn tractor comes with a 22hp Briggs and Stratton 2-cylinder engine with the Easy Change oil filter system. Research tells me that only 60% of the engine oil is replaced with each oil change. The oil filters come loaded with oil but are expensive at $48.00 USD each (as of Aug 2022). J...

Sharpen those dull mower blades! | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE In this episode we remove the two blades from our John Deere S130 lawn tractor for a sharpening session. The blades are Gator brand high lift mulching blades as we don't bag our lawn clippings. We sharpen them using a 4-1/2" DeWalt angle grinder and a 120 grit flap wheel sanding disc. We follow the bevel that is already ground into the l...

Jalousie window hinge repair | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE Our house has a Florida room on the back with Anderson jalousie windows. Also known as jealousy or louvered windows they are more commonly seen in the southern part of the country. First patented in the 1900s they came into style in the 1950s and are prominent in many styles of mid-century houses. When operating correctly a window crank move...

Angry Baby Possum in the Garden | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE Today Mrs. Rattlecan was filling up our submerged irrigation garden beds and found a baby possum in our live trap. We like possums as they eat ticks so we brought them over to the treeline and released it. I'll also take you around the yard to show you the state of things on a hot summer Ohio morning. This is also the first test run of us...

MRH 0110 the sheds | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE Since we purchased the property in 2017 Mrs. Rattlecan has has a dislike, no... a hatred for the three utility sheds along the back property line. Known as "the sheds" even a covering of grey paint and bejeweled butterflies couldn't quench the loathing she had for them. So earlier in the year she took matters into her own hands. SIP bed revision after 1 season | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE After using the sub-irrigated planter SIP beds for their first season we decided to make some revisions. Raised Garden Bed Repair | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE The corners of our SIP beds are warped and unsightly so I repaired them using angle iron and self-tapping metal screws. Not sure if the warping is just from the wood itself of the repeated wetting/drying cycles in combination with a harsh southern exposure but the Western red cedar boards of our raised garden beds are cupped and have pulled the ...

Potting mix for the raised SIP beds We've built our sub-irrigated planters SIP and now we need to fill them with a well-draining / wicking planting mix. I use a (roughly) 3-1-1 mix of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite with some pine bark nuggets thrown in. I'm utilizing the tarp method found in the Square Foot Gardening book to mix nearly 20 cubic feet of mix at a time. Be sure to do this whe...
Self-irrigating planter beds? | MRS. RATTLECAN'S HOUSE
มุมมอง 1344 ปีที่แล้ว
Today we're building four SIP beds a.k.a. self-irrigating planting beds or (more accurately) submerged irrigation planters. The idea is you have a reservoir of water at the base of the planter for the soil to draw to the surface as the planting media dries out from plant absorption. The beds are easy to construct: 6' and 3' 1x10 western red cedar joined with 1 1/2" angle iron. Line the box then...

I did exactly what you are describing. I cut every soffit between the rafters then added the double vented aluminum soffit panel. Was a pain but made a huge difference. I'm so glad to see you using current code information. Figure out sq ft to determine intake and exhaust requirements. Great job all the way. I also had an external baffle ridge vent to exhaust properly. Found that out later but had to have a repair done so roofer did the new style ridge vent at that time. Attic stays around ambient temperature 12 hours of the day and within 10 degrees for another 8. The hottest 4 in the afternoon early evening under 20 degrees different. That's year round too made a difference with no ice dams on the gutters in winter.

oh god, just jumped down the rabbit hole of rewiring an old home after trying to replace a decrepit ceiling light fixture and discovering that it's just two very sketchy wires (with insulation that looks like rotting bark) nestled between a bunch of upstairs floorboards with no junction box whatsoever 😭 and to shut off the breaker for that light, I had to play process of elimination and ultimately discovered a situation similar to yours, with several breakers linked to seemingly random combinations of multiple outlets in different rooms. Looks like my large repair to-do list has a new priority item lol

The phase won't matter because your belt will eventually slip. Or if you hit a rock with one of the blades, it will go out of phase, no need to pay that much attention to it.

I took my S130 to the Deere dealer to have this done and they refused to do it. Said it voids warranty and Deere forbids dealers from doing this illegal procedure. I informed them I'd purchased the parts at their own service desk in the front of their store but they said the 30 second method was far superior to a complete oil change.

You don’t even need to pull the key out you don’t need to put safety glasses on i’ve been working on this for 60 years I’ve never had anything start up on me yet because nobody has their handle on the pull cord see if it’s two for a while see if it’s too full oil what a waste of money I had to do was clean the old parts you don’t even have to count how many times you gotta turn the screw in just look to see where the threads are at before you take it out
