Junior 16 YO Gelding
Junior is a very sweet and calm boy. More whoa than go, likes a calm stroll down the trail. We believe he is a Tennesee Walker mix and is gaited. Junior is very gentle and safe, but an intermediate-level rider would likely do better than a beginner with him at 1st. A beginner may do well with him under the supervision of an experienced rider. Meet Junior in Leander, TX, at the Double Spur Ranch.

    I have a horse that came to us very spoiled and while the sweetest gal around, she is used to getting her way and not offering much in return. She submits to my commands and faces me at all times to look for my next command but, how can I un-spoil her without making myself the negative association>

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Be the kind of leader that she needs. Horses are drawn to strength for leadership, and trust follows respect. It sounds like you have her respect. Within the boundaries of respect, be her source of calm and peace. Gentle strokes on the sensory points at sensitive nerve endings, sitting calmly with her in a stall comforting her, find ways to give her endorphins. Most importantly, put your perspective away and look at EVERYTHING from your horse's perspective. Accept who she is. Not every horse wants relationship dynamics like the ones in the movie trailer in our imaginations. I have some horses that want to be with me every second and others who just don't show affection, but I love them just the same.

    I have been putting oil in feed and cut the feed back and he is uncomfortable not pawing the ground so I have had surgery about 3 weeks ago myself so can I put him up and not feed him and let him run the barn and get him a pain shot to relax his muscles

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't decipher this message. The lack of punctuation might prevent the message from being evident. Please don't deny your horse food. I can see that oil has gone in the feed, and he is uncomfortable and apparently not pawing the ground, which somehow led to you having surgery 3 weeks ago. If your horse can run the barn, that's a very special skill for a horse. Maybe watch the video again, and you may see that the key is proper hydration, which is why I make buckets of alfalfa soup (more water than alfalfa) several times a day.

    In the San Marcos area! Just got a young Arabian and have been having trouble bonding with him. His life long owner was a man and I’m a woman… he definitely seems to get along better with my dad, my boyfriend, my sister’s boyfriend, and so on. He avoids me in the pasture and is hard to catch. I’ll try some of these things.

    • @DoubleSpurRanch

      To just go for a walk, I don't guess it matters much. Unless you feel the other horses will cause a problem. To work, I'd use the round pen for sure.

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, if they won't move out for you for the short lounge on a lead line, it is about confusion. I offer direction by leading the horse off to one direction and apply supporting pressure to the shoulder and/or cheek to push them off and release when they do. I sometimes focus on nothing but moving the shoulder away from me, rather than moving in circles. I'll try to post a video breaking it down.

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Start over. 1st, look at yourself. When I fail to get a result from a horse, 99% of the time it is I who have failed, not the horse. Sometimes a horse doesn't believe you. Sometimes they just don't understand. I'd start with leading exercises, rebuild the trust/respect relationship and try again with a different type of pressure.

    Great video! Very helpful! I have to build a bond with a horse after an 18 year long pause of having been around horses. I know the theory but I need to be more assertive. I did some of these exercises last week with her but I will have to learn to be more assertive. I will check out your other videos soon! Thanks for posting! They are well done!

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was somewhat helpful. Keep on trying and spending time with your horse. Make their feet move. Apply pressure, and as soon as they begin to move or yield to your pressure release the pressure and give them release. Become a student of your horses responses to you. Observe them and how they react, yield, and move from different stimuli. Breathe loud sighs of air when they do well. This is the sound of relaxation and calm to a horse.

    What about OTTB that have just finished racing a month ago? We were walking fence line with them to show them and my husband couldn’t hold the Gelding so he let him go and he went right through the fence now he is back on stall rest for a week to heal and we will try to turn them out again. Any tips?

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know your horse or all the factors, but generally, when you meet a horses emotional needs of feeling safe because he truly believes that you have his back and that you are an able and dependable leader, alpha protector, you end up with a generally calm non spooky horse. That said, you can help a horse improve and make better choices, but you can't always change who they are. Warwick Schiller talks abut helping horses deal with things that spook them and managing their anxiety called "Don't Go to Bed Angry" .

    • @DoubleSpurRanch

      You are likely describing a hoof abscess. They can be painful. Soaking and poultice, hoof packing, etc can help. Consider either a vet visit or looking up how to treat hoof abscess.

    Very useful Steve. I am 53 years old a beginner in horse world, this seems difficult and time consuming for me as I don't have much time for the mare I bought.

    • @DoubleSpurRanch
      @DoubleSpurRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is unfortunate. When we buy a horse, we make a commitment to that horse. They need the leadership from and connection with you. If you don't have time for your horse do the horse a favor and re-home her to someone who can fulfill that commitment and has the time required for horse ownership.
