Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - Debug Mode Review
The only thing I truly enjoyed abuot TotK was the moment to moment gameplay, and I guess the music.
I can't believe its going to be 10 years.
Without having read or seen any spoilers, I surmised that Zelda had been sent to the past and that Rauru actually knew her from his time. I guessed at that by the time I left the initial island before landing in Hyrule. Then I quickly guessed that “Zelda” was an imposter. I really didn’t need to go find the dragon tears to learn as much. I also had been disappointed by BOTW’s storytelling. So I just was demotivated to even figure it out. I also don’t agree with the Zelda series having bad stories. They’re generally fairly simple stories, but there have been plenty of great story elements, deep lores, and emotional moments.
Simple doesn't mean bad. Like I said, there are some nice moments in the games but I just disagree that the stories themselves have any depth with maybe a couple exceptions. How can there be deep lore if Nintendo doesn't care about lore, consistency, or worldbuilding?
Basically everything said in this video is what I thought about BOTW, and I was relieved that TOTK had a more central storyline that was much more in depth and epic. BOTW story felt like a side quest that wasn’t a requirement
The fact that this is the game we got after 6 years of waiting is downright insulting. It took Nintendo LESS THAN 2 YEARS to come up with a sequel to OoT and this is in the late 90s for crying out loud. And that sequel ended up being arguably the second best Zelda game behind its predecessor. All with the limitations with OoT’s engine. And it was an original/unique story. In the 2020s, with all the additional resources Nintendo had its disposal, they plopped a bunch of meaningless islands in the sky and a bunch of rocks under ground and called it a day. That’s not even what pissed me off the most. They took the worst part of BOTW (divine beasts) and said hey Zelda fans, we heard your complaints, we’re bringing back temples. Then they made “temples” that were EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING THING AS THE DIVINE BEASTS!! How dare you insult our intelligence like that Nintendo. A big slap to all of our faces and a big fuck you to the fans that have been loyal to this franchise for over 25 years.
It's cool if you don't like the direction of TotK but this take is really uninformed. 6 years is disappointing for a game that has a lot of content shared with the previous, but comparing modern game development (which partially took place during a global pandemic) to the N64 days is apples and oranges. Nobody produces large scale games in 2 years anymore. Also, the Divine Beasts were great. One of the coolest parts of BotW. Traditional Zelda dungeons needed shaking up after almost 30 years. The TotK dungeons were kind of an unhappy medium between the two, I think. But hardly an insult.
I like playing the game spitefully, building out settlements so aggressively that i can ignore the main quest lines. 😃
This is interesting. As I'm watching your videos, it looks like your stance is to stand in the middle of everything. You mentioned the extreme polarization of opinions and expressed regret about the lack of measured response. I can see why would you try to position yourself in your reviews in such a balanced way, though this comes with some drawbacks. On one hand, it is a niche that is left alone in the corner, as audiences, in general, aren't too drawn to quiet voices during storms. Very few people are interested in hearing "well, it had some good things and bad things, wasn't that impressed". On the other, we NEED such voices in the ocean of raging negativity and cult like positivity. And this is probably something that affects your presentation of the subject. The feeling I get from listening to your reviews is "mild" or "soft". You are not veering too much into either negative or positive side of things. When you say that you enjoyed something, I can't hear it in your voice. When you say that something is not done well, I cannot heard disappointment. Using this game as an example, you have stayed balanced on topics that require a more decisive stance. Looking at the story, its pacing, characters, and structure, it was all over the place, as if the writers wanted to have a theme played out, but did not think of a way to have it all work together. They were so focused on showing hatred, vengeance and brutality, that they have destroyed the logic and storytelling that got in their way. We can hardly connect with Ellie, as she's being presented as a revenge obsessed killer who mowns down Abby's friends. We can hardly connect with Abby, as she's the killer of a beloved character of this franchise. The story keeps talking about revenge, yet at the very end refrains from doing it? Those are critical mistakes that require adequate feedback. The way it affects a review is that, as a viewer, I am not sure what's the status on this game. What I feel is that the game is probably mid or lukewarm, as it did not draw enough emotion from you. If something doesn't make you love or hate it, it's probably boring. That's my general takeaway from this review. Still, I respect the work you put into it and I can see that you know how to structure your videos and script. Interested in seeing more.
I wouldn't say I try to be in the middle on everything. But I do try to avoid reductive hot takes even though those can be fun. It's not my jam though. TLOU2 is a complex one because there are a lot of individual elements I love like the music, direction, "cinematography", and many of the individual scenes. I played it once back in 2020 but a lot of that has stuck with me. But overall the story doesn't work as well as I'd like. I'll be very curious how the TV show adapts the material.
War never changes.
Bethesda lost a fan (and I'm almost positive it's not just me) after they made trendy live service slop. Stanfield was just downstream of that. Fallout 4 should have been a warning sign but 76 was thr nail in the coffin for me. Go live service go broke is how I feel.
Very nice video, overall. Good audio quality, and you have good voice for narration. It definitely feels like a solid production. I would throw in a bit of constructive criticism: -Fallout 3's character is not a blank slate like you have mentioned. It also comes with a predetermined backstory. -Bethesda's shift in design actually came with an earlier game - Skyrim. It's their first, significantly dumbed down production with a casual "do all you want" approach. Fallout 4 was next in line, with its limited dialogue and deletion of skills. -The general feel of the script is a bit... confusing. You first mention that you'll be grumpy in the beginning, but sprinkle positivity later. Then you move on to discuss various topics in both positive and negative way. A little more consistency wpuld help, but this is more of a nitpick. There are some other, tiny bits, but they get lost in the general landscape.
Fair points. Thanks for your feedback and thanks for watching! If the script was somewhat confused it's a reflection of the internal conflict I have about this game and this series. I didn't want to just be relentlessly negative even though I had a lot of criticisms. There's too much relentless negativity on this platform. I know what you're saying about Fallout 3 having a pre-determined backstory but I think literally playing that character from birth and through key moments of development gives the player a huge amount of ownership that Fallout 4 doesn't. That's the difference. You're right that Skyrim was a shift in Bethesda's design but I don't think that shift really solidified until Fallout 4 with the junk and base building systems taking the place of more in depth traditional RPG elements. Skyrim's systems may be simplified compared to previous games, but it still has a far more interesting world and that is, above all, the thing I value most about Bethesda games.
@@DEBUGMODE Hello, I understand what you mean regarding the distinction between 3 and 4 backstory. That's a fair point. They both have established backstories, but 3 does give the player a little bit more freedom in it. It's also an interesting point to compare the worlds of Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Never thought about putting them next to each other, as they are from completely different genres. Would have to make an in depth analysis on this comparison to make a fair assessment regarding their respective worldbuilding comparison. They both have their issues, but on different levels (though some issues are core Bethesda design elements) I appreciate your answer.
It's subjective to some extent, but I'd argue that Skyrim has a lot more going on than Fallout 4: the dragons, the civil war, the religious strife, the various factions both in the game and in the broader setting. All of that contributes to the feeling of that world being alive and dynamic and a place you can roleplay in even if the actual quests and dialog choices are a bit shallower than past Bethesda games or other RPGs.
survival mode does not get rid of fast travel entirely due to the optional methods like vertibirds also in my current playthrough i decided to start building a live in vault 88 im still just starting to test its viability for it but the 3 entrances at differrent locations might offer quality of life to it i imagine
the settlement system becomes necessary and fun to engage with in survival mode sure, theoretically you can speedrun ignoring it but the full survival sandbox experience is great fun once deeper explored
Are you familiar with the mod SimSettlements 2? It seems to 'fix' many of the issues you seem to have with the settlement system being divorced from everything else, and giving people an option to automate the settlement crafting system, while also offering a story and plot which is written better than anything in Fallout 4 outside of certain individual quests like Pickman or Silver Shroud. It feels like the DLC which should have existed.
I'm aware. I had a shot of its Nexus mods page in the video although I wrote that segment before I knew about it. I think those are just sort of obvious directions to take the settlement system. Like you said, it could have, should have been an official DLC.
With Botw and Totk all the cool shit already happened. The cool shit I want to play
It sucks. Like, they didn't care. They've always been a gameplay first philosophy but this was a whole other tier of wtf. Like, I'm not the biggest fan of Skyward Sword but I could see the POTENTIAL of "The Sky". TOTK sky is worse than it 12 years after that game. And I'd debate Wind Waker's "Great Sea" is better than both.
Wow, no idea how youtube knew to throw your video at me but it was one of the best 2024 roundup videos I've watched! Eagerly awaiting whatever you have next :)
Thank you! That's very kind! Always nice when the algorithm works out and does you a solid like that, haha.
Your suggestions are all the things sim settlements 2 added to fo4
I was about to what about majoras mask and wind waker would've also added links awakening
Want to echo other comments and note how strong your writing is. Absolutely phenomenal stuff. Every sentence feels thought out and convincing. Well done, can’t wait to see you blow up soon!
Thank you, that's very kind. I donno about blowing up, haha. I want to make stuff I care about whether the mysterious TH-cam algorithm helps it get seen or not.
Given Emil and Todds responses to Shattered Space criticism. I have zero hope Starfield will improve, and ES6 will be bad for sure. I almost wish I was never a fan of their past games, it hurts seeing the arrogance and decline from Bethesda.
That's a little harsh, isn't it? I know the quotes you're referring to. I think some of that got overblown or taken out of context. I'm rooting for them to turn it around even though I'm more skeptical than ever about their future releases.
Your writing is insanely good. I really felt the passion you have for all these games. I'm a slightly smaller channel who makes similar video essays and listening to this pumped me up to work on my next project. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! That's awesome. Sometimes it's hard to stay motivated so I'm glad this might have helped you in that way. Your comment was definitely an encouragement to me.
I'm confident your channel is going to grow big and soon. It has the high production value and thoughtful writing in channels I've seen that tend to grow fast. Glad to be here in those early days! Good luck on your TH-cam journey :)
love the high quality videos!
Bro called the video "making peace with Fallout 4" but all I'm hearing in this entire video is a bunch of b1tching and moaning. Doesn't sound to me like he's made any peace at all and just wanted to complain. Lol Terrible channel. Disliked and told YT to never give me this guy's vids again. 🖕
gamers declaring war on video games these days
I've learned to love fallout 4 as a base building apocalypse game with some fun combat systems in place. The story is unbearable and the quest aren't fun at pretty much any point, so I don't love it for those reasons, but the ability to set up all settlements as mini diamond city empires is so fun
@6:47 Fresh, new idea!? Huh? Did we... play the same game? Has Zelda not sacrificed herself in previous titles before? Did she not sacrifice herself in BotW? Like I'm confused. How is her sacrifice something new when she has done it countless times? And if you were referring to her just turning into a dragon in general, I mean, it's not really warranted. What was the purpose if nothing was done with it? Compared to other installments to save her kingdom, Totk was pretty shallow. Zelda took pictures, studied history, and saw murals of these people and did not say anything to anyone to try and prevent Rauru and Sonia from dying. If there was an effort in trying to stop Ganondorf BEFORE hand and turning herself into a dragon was the only option then sure. But, that's not what happened in the story. So, the process of draconification was unnecessary and also used as a way into manipulate us into thinking Zelda had no other choice when really everyone's downfall was her fault.
With the billy the kid example, I just headcanon that he got stuck playing in there very recently, otherwise its too horrifying to contemplate (and also how would his parents not find him in 200 years if he was literally within a mile of them)
Botw: Bad story, good storytelling Totk: good story, terrible storytelling
Another problem with the intro is how fake it seems. Nora is a lawyer and Nate a veteran and probably have some money saved up, sure, but we have been set up to believe pre-bomb life was absolutely dismal, not picket fences and mowed lawns. An argument could be made that sanctuary was just a rare outlier. But that’s just so.. boring? Disingenuous? We’ve seen soldiers in power armor shooting a civilian point blank in the street and laughing as the opening scene in the first game. There was a plague, riots, chinese concentration camps, massive inflation (check the price when u pick up a magazine). Nate was stationed in canada(and some theorized he could be the laughing soldier for a while), all the more reason to have this brought up, if not in the intro, then later in dialogue. But no. It rarely ever appears to affect either character, they seem cheery as hell in the intro.
I think it's a combination of two things. 1) They've changed the tone of the franchise since FO1 leaning into the picket fence Ameriana of the 50s. The franchise is built on the irony of the American Dream contrasted with the harsh reality of the nuclear sword of Damocles. 2) Some people (like Nate and Nora) are better off than what you described. Even if the world is falling apart, it's not that way for everyone. There's been a lot of crazy stuff in the real world but it doesn't necessarily trickle down to everybody. The older games didn't play up the retro-futuristic aesthetic quite so much whereas Bethesda has made that a core part of the series. I don't think that's necessarily bad as long as the satire remains. Todd Howard has said that "American naivety" is core to the series identity when asked if Fallout would ever be set in another country. I think he's totally right about that. Whether Bethesda is doing a good job with that theme is another discussion...
I'm writing this before watching the video because I just want to gush about Fallout 4. The writing sucks, but damn do I still love this game. I already don't care for going through the story of a game over and over, and Fallout 4 doesn't really do any of that. You can start a new game with the quick start mod or by loading a pre-made save, leave the vault and go out into the world and have fun not just chasing your son, but also just rebuilding the entire Commonwealth from nothing and I adore that. The lack of a skill system means traits can really shine, the lack of level cap, the random legendaries, and the abundance of random stuff to find in the wasteland means an experience where you don't have to begrudgingly leave behind hours of work because of running out of levels to get or no longer having anything to find, and customizable weapons gives something fun to mess with everytime you hit your base. Take that and the improvements over Hardcore mode from NV and you can have an actually tough challenge where food and water need to be pre-packed before a trip and I bloody love the entire thing even if I ignore the story. Plus the side content is often better than the main story, so it's just really fun to explore. Anyway, time to watch the video since I'm pretty sure it'll be a really good watch even if I already have an idea of where it's going.
Because Aonuma is a hack. Video done. Same as he didn't understand what made Majora great, now he doesn't understand why BotW worked but how making people wait for 6 years for the same thing and $70 was a slap in the face. I can't wait until he's gone and hopefully Koizumi gets the reigns.
Not a big fan of this kind of analysis. Pinning your issues on one person because of some flimsy narrative built from interview snippets is not a solid foundation for an argument. A hack doesn't produce one of the best games ever made. That's a lazy, incurious critique. Think what you want of the games. But be very careful of broad statements about developers. You don't know them. You weren't there.
thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. very well researched, with great insights. I too, am very surprised that this doesn't have wayyyy more views because you definitely deserve it given the length and quality of not only the video, but the narration. either way, I appreciate the time you took to make it and it's a very good think-piece on this topic. fantastic work!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
BOTW has a good story, you just need to actively search for it if you want to know more about it. TOTK just has a bad story. It's told in a disjointed and repetitive way and it doesn't even make sense when you try to analyze it. It also doesn't even exempt to link its story to botw in any way despite being a direct sequel.
lol am I the only one who loves fallout 4 ?? I don’t understand the hate lol I freaking love fallout 4 AND the others but 4 is my go to !
No, you're definitely not the only one. It's a well liked game, but it's also disappointing and controversial for a significant portion of players and series fans.
In a nutshell, Fallout 4 created a AAA roleplaying roadmap storyline that competes with GTA5 all the way because there are ways of going about it as far as dialogue but it's only what the game allows because everything is too expectedly scripted when there is in fact a lot of the unexpected, well at least that's how your first playthrough feels like on New Vegas because your not coming out of a vault on New Vegas so that's understandable
How the hell does this well researched, well produced, good quality video not have more viewers?! I expected it to be at around millions of views. This shit is great
I'm okay at making videos and very bad at the TH-cam algorithm? If quality always equated to viewership, we'd live in a very different world. But thank you for the kind words!
It would be good, if it weren't considered part of the fallout world. That's my issue with it. It entirely crutches on the word fallout otherwise it would have been forgotten by time as yet another boring looter shooter. Bethesda tried, and sadly have failed 3 for 3
Thank you for introducing me the DICE Awards :)
i think it'd be cool if you didn't remember much like how you basically spawn out of nowhere in fnv. then you go around and start learning about the world and yourself. have shaun be like ulysses with less waxing poetically
Great video, In general I love how Geoff Keighley is handling the production, I think he really loves the industry and want to popularize it. - I do love the trailers, but I wish they move some of them to the pre-show to make more room for speeches. - I think they should add peer voting, something like (50% Peers, 40% Journalists/Influencers, 10% Audience) - I also hope that they add something equivalent to "Scientific and Technical Awards" for the Oscars add focus on Game Development and Behind-the-Scenes, or at least a some categories of "Technical Achievement" like the BAFTA.
Subscribed btw ;)
Thank you! I like your ideas. In a perfect world having peer, press, and public all factored into the voting would be kind of cool. I imagine that the peer thing would be a big headache for Keighley. You have to have somebody decide who's in that peer group year-to-year and it seems like he wants to avoid that level of complication.
My guy. I've been thinking this. Thanks for making a video. I haven't even fully understood thought it through. You took the words out of my mind. I already recently gave up 76 but after looking at 4 I was like I beat it and I mod it and did stuff. Now I might do it again. But just think you know it's just not worth it anymore. Nv yes or 3 especially 3 since I haven't played it in decade probably. But weird time to be waiting for 5 and see the issues with these games. Idk starting to think 5 is just gonna bomb if tod, beth, etc are in charge fully
I'm concerned that Bethesda has lost their touch. I don't think it's a lack of talent. I wonder if it's the way they organize projects now. Bigger teams, less vision comes through. More quantity but less personality. Not a great trend. Hope they can turn it around for TES 6 and FO5.
Great analysis.
Insane quality content for the amount of views, you're gonna blow up soon 100%
Complaining about believablity in a fantasy video game where society is stuffed in vaults is when you know youve gone too far off the deep end
You're confusing believability and realism. I don't expect Fallout to be realistic. But I do want it to be "believable" within its own fictional rules and established setting. Internal logic is important for the integrity of a story and especially a fictional world.
@@DEBUGMODE Both are equally stupid to complain about in a fallout game. Like its really nitpicky and nerdy to do that its trying to to sound artsy and thoughtful when you really sound like a nerd pushing up his glasses complaining about everything
Okay, so you don't like thinking about stuff. What's your point? Why are you engaging with this if you think it's all stupid?
@@DEBUGMODE I can say the same for this video lol its just critique do better m8
I'm honestly trying to engage with your critique but you haven't been the least bit constructive about it so there's nothing more to say. Thanks for engaging all the same.
well done vid! def needs more eyes!

Amazing content
So, how does this feel now that star wars outlaw came out? You made such a well thought out hypothetical and it was realized, but in the worst possible way. You guessed so accuratly what a star wars bounty hunter game would be like, but there was no way to guess ea would make it so dramatically low quality
I mean, that's Star Wars, isn't it? A bunch of wasted potential with just enough bright spots to keep you hooked? That's been my experience in the Disney era anyway. Haven't played Outlaws. Probably won't. I thought she was more of a smuggler type than a bounty hunter though? Also, it's a Ubisoft game. I guess you at least have to give them credit for actually releasing something. EA cancelled a bunch of their Star Wars projects.
“Taking the bad with the good is all you can do” you should have used roger warwick quote saying the same thing basically
