Dolphins chasing Kahawai - plus Bonus Footage
This entire video was filmed with a drone the size of my hand and a wide angle lens with no zoom. In places I am so close to the ocean that you can see the propellers making ripples on the water surface. The drone is 1km away at times and only a metre above the ocean... real nerve wracking stuff!
Filming fast moving dolphins that are feeding is very hard because they aren't swimming straight. They're going in all directions and all angles and you never know where they are going to come up next once they go underwater.

This Seven Gill Shark was so heavy it was almost too much for me when I tried to release it. The capture and tagging went well but trying to get it back into the surf was a nightmare.

Battling a Big Shark off the Beach

The first half of the video is missing because I forgot to take the lens cap off the Gopro in all the excitement. I put a whole squid bait out 276 metres with the drone and after about 30 minutes it got taken. Earlier on in the day I hooked an even bigger shark using a shark head as bait but it straightened out a snap snivel. I know it was bigger because I couldn't stop it.

Nice video, you captured some amazing footage! Also great to see Kahawai around in such healthy numbers. I guess it's likely the result of the commercial regulation changes, which if I remember correctly was around 2008 to 2010. We are probably seeing the results of the recovery period.

Really enjoyed watching your battle, big shark to bring through the surf and safely released. 🙂I was down your way on the 12th of Feb and was fishing just north of the car park, saw you drive past along the track in your jeep with Rastus. All I caught was a skinny red cod.
it only fishes well when the water is clean... that whole beach has been dirty for weeks

Fantastic photography... those rock formations are something else! I have tramped it all, at different times, but this gives a stupendous view. It's like one of those flying dreams. Your choice of sound is great too.
It's just feeding isn't it?
the point is that it's feeding on fur seals not fish. DOC have been denying they are preying on them but my research indicates it is the main food source of the big bull sea lions. DOC are encouraging them to breed and colonise the coast at the expense of the fur seals and penguins. I'm just documenting it. As far as I know nobody else has captured it on video.
