Build this container for your David Austin rose
This project was fun, and easy and the final product is beautiful! Build this container for your David Austin rose.
For my birthday, my wife gifted me a new rose, continuing a tradition from the past two years since I developed a passion for David Austin Roses. Not having enough space in the garden bed, I decided a cottage garden-style planter would be ideal. However, I found that ready-made ones online were quite expensive, with the one in the video priced at $120...ouch! Additionally, it was too narrow for my David Austin rose. Undeterred, I resolved to create the perfect container myself. After sketching out my vision and crunching the numbers, this is what I came up with! I always aim to construct things affordably, using minimal tools, and ensuring they are easy to assemble.
Shopping list:
2 redwood fence boards - 3/4" x 5.5" x 6'.
4 redwood bender boards (usually in the garden section) - 0.125" x 3.375". x 96"
1 redwood - 2" x 2" x 8'.
This is an example of a 5gal planter I used on the interior. Like I said, I had one left over from a tree I planted in my yard. My local nursery has them for $6. I would imagine you could get one for free from any local landscape company. You may need to go to one of the active job sites.
econosuperstore.com/itm/20-pots-of-5-gallon-black-plastic-plant-nursery-pot-container-grow-flower-garden/
Tools you "need":
Miter saw.
Table aaw.
Air nailer.
Staple gun.
Wood glue.
Tape measure.
Pencil.
Cut List:
Redwood bender: 24 x 15"
Redwood fence boards - 4 x 18" & 2 x 19.5"
Redwood 2" x 2": 4 x 17.5" and cut the remaining piece in two equal lengths. Cut these on the table saw (long ways) into four .75' strips.
See the video for the remaining cuts and installation.
****Last thing to note.....if I could do it all over again and I would reduce the width of the planter by one inch all the way around. So, reduce the width of each panel by one inch. This would give a better fit to the planter that I used to hold the actual rose.

Spring is Finally Here - Garden Update
มุมมอง 1.3K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
It felt like we had the wettest winter yet here in Northern California. Normally, this time of year we have glorious 70 degree days with clear skies and sunshine. But, the last 2-3 years we have had to rough it through incredibly LONG winters. But, finally, spring is here and the garden is starting to wake up! I couldn't be happier to see fresh new leaves and even a few early flowers. The David...
Small Space California Vegetable Garden
มุมมอง 1.7Kปีที่แล้ว
You would be shocked at how many fresh vegetables you can grow in a tiny suburban garden. I have roughly 80sf of growing space, but I was able to supply my family of 5 with tons of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, corn, bell peppers, fresh herbs and so much more. I built a new potting bench for the garden, and since my BBQ is currently in Cooper's (my dogs) bathroom area, I thought both needed a ...
How To Build An Obelisk

Another awesome garden build that's affordable and easy to do! I was recently wanting to add a classic cottage garden obelisk. But, after looking online I noticed how expensive they were. They also looked exactly the same. After several different attempts at designing something unique, I finally had the perfect design. Something that looks like a garden obelisk, but was also sleek and modern. T...
My Young Modern Cottage Garden

I have always wanted a cottage garden. The problem is I live in the suburbs of CA with a modern-style home.....not the best backdrop for a cottage garden. So I am hoping to mix the craziness of a cottage garden, with a formal modern garden to create a MODERN STYLE COTTAGE GARDEN! Cottage gardens are usually densely planted, with curved colorful beds. Shrubs, perennials, fruits and vegetables ar...

David Austin Rose Review - Emily Bronte
มุมมอง 17Kปีที่แล้ว
I think this is the case where everyone's environment, growing conditions and other factors can highly affect how your rose grows and how your rose performs. David Austin has Emily Bronte as one of their best for health as well as their best for fragrance. While I would agree that she is very healthy, I do not agree that she is one of the most fragrant. I have many more roses in my garden, and ...
How to Build a Modern Birdhouse for my Garden

If you're looking to build a birdhouse for your garden then this is a great project to take on. Not only was it SUPER easy to build, but I was able to complete the project for just $5.00. Go Chemical Free in your Garden - Heres Why
มุมมอง 2062 ปีที่แล้ว
Garden chemicals have been around for a very long time, but until recently gardeners and the public are starting to realize that maybe these are not safe. Could what we spray on our foods have major effects on our mental health? Could this be behind the HUGE increases we are seeing in cancer, depression, ADHD, Autism, etc? I am no chemist or scientist, but I am starting to think that the answer...
How to Make Your Own Garden Potting Table

I got serious about gardening a year ago. Although I have had gardens in the past, once we put a pool in and I had a blank canvas I got excited. So that got me thinking. If you asked a professional (o...

"I stared at it"...😂
LMAO this video is great
Merry Christmas, putting my new order in. We are in Contra Costa County.
I’m in Phoenix and just bought some Spanish lavender. How delicate should I be? Thx!
If you are not overly confident then just the first inch of the entire plant and you should be totally fine. Just try to make sure you are only cutting into green/live wood. Best of luck!!!
@@intheglenn thank you! Phoenix is definitely different lol This is my first attempt at multiple flowers. I’ve had vinca and now I’m branching out lol
Thank you ,well done😊
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Looks a lot like the Quietness rose.
You gotta try out Gabriel Oak, it smells amazing and it's not that hot magenta like on their website. It's more subdue in person. Alnwick also has great scent but weaker
These are great suggestions......really, I wish I could have all of them :0)
I like the arbor, where purchase please? Zone 10b here, looks like backbreaking work
You can find them on Amazon for about $20. I got three seasons out of mine which is pretty good for the price. Mine bent from the weight of cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. :0(
Thank you for this video! My wife and I just followed it and made our own! Wish I could send you a photo.
That's great to hear! I am so glad this helped you. I'm sure it turned out great....enjoy!!!
🎉😊 Thank you so much for this review. Is your hydrangeas in full sun all day?
They get full sun until about 2pm. Here in CA that's about all they can take. If you are in a place with less heat then you could probably get away with full-full sun. Hope this helped!
Beautiful rose

What can I do if the fork doesn't go through the soil? Should I try hand grenades or landmines?
Put a hose out on a trickle and let it sit for a while. This will help break up the first few inches. Continue to do this and it'll break up. Didnt say it wasn't a lot of work!! 😝
Thank you! This was very helpful. I'm behind on the pruning (big time), but I will do my best to revisit your channel. Cheers!
Glad you found the video helpful! :0)
Strong fragrant, thornless and beautiful of the roses are the most important elements for me!
Just found this video- so I’m confused…are you adding 6-8” of top soil to it and watering regularly BEFORE you fork it??! My yard is rock hard, used to have sod on it, I couldn’t get a fork or shovel or anything into it right now- I can water…soak for a couple days and then I can scrape away an inch. Too much for this 70 year old! But I really want to plant lavender and others there. So I need soil that drains as well as has some life in it. Suggestions?? Great video, love the humor!😂
Deeply water the hard soil. Even if it's rock hard, just leave a hose at a trickle for 20-30 minutes. Then dump your soil conditioner on top. Get the new soil moist and use that pitchfork to break it all up. It might take time and a lot of effort, but this winter, the rain and worms will break everything up and bring the good soil in deeper. Then in spring, I would repeat this step and slowly over time it will become soil and not dirt.
Ok- I was going to water deeply and use cardboard and soil/compost - so no cardboard? I thought it would help keep the moisture in. ( we are like 15-20% humidity here) And yes, I can use the soil conditioner. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for such detail review! Your roses so beaufitul. Do you / or anyone know if jude the obscure is discontinued ?cant find any retailer :(
Right now you won't be able to buy any DA roses here in the states. I'm sure Jude will be available as a bare root again in the Spring.
Hubby told me to find a potting TABLE I liked and he would build it. This is it!! Thanks!!
That's great! I'm sure you will love it and use at as often as I do :0)
Great video. The bulldog green plastic rake is the best gardening tool ever. Buy it and you’ll not believe how easy it I to rake grass and leaves. New sunny from Glasgow, Scotland.
Thank you for the heads up. I will have to pick one up for this coming Fall.
Great video but, to garden, why would anyone wear gloves? I wanna feel the soil.
I just planted my first hydrangea last night ... did you say it needs Mulch .. whats that?
I was born and raised, and live, in San Diego. Not just the county but basically downtown! Or uptown, I suppose…so moving to a little cottage style house in 2012 was an no-brained for me, when I first saw the property, and its front yard, porch, side yard, and curb appeal! I wanted to create a "California cottage garden". And I did! Lol. And obviously a lot of people garden here; I don’t think our location is a hindrance at all to designing a garden. In fact, we have an expanded palette of plants to choose from, compared to traditional British cottage gardens, and much of the northern hemisphere! 🤣 Minus a few more temperate, cooler-climate species, and for those we have just as many suitable replacements. For example, even though we can totally grow _Verbena bonariensis_ in SoCal, an even hardier, evergreen alternative is the orchid genus _Epidendrum_ which flowers in a similar way, and a lot longer. Plus it’s an orchid that can handle sun and grow terrestrially, in well-draining soil. Or instead of certain grasses or leafy species, like _Phormium_ (New Zealand flax), the _Cymbidium_ orchids are a perfect evergreen substitute. And that’s not even counting all the cacti, succulents, tropicals, bromeliads, aroids, etc.!
I have for 2 years wasn’t doing too good I did replant in other location now doing very good But it looks like getting like vine rose😂 so I just don’t know anymore.
I hope you love Roald Dahl. I find him very healthy, very fragrant and an all round favourite. I garden in the UK, so different conditions. Eustacia Vye flowers all summer for me but I have given her a little mid afternoon shade and I think that's helped.
Love all your feedback. The blooms so far for Roald Dahl have been a wonderful addition to the garden. Cannot wait for next year when the rose is more established and blooms or strong.
Thank you for this!! Wasn't sure if to prune my lavender. Now I'm sure! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Glad I was able to help you! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
I have this one and it’s been struggling in zone 9b Texas for me. Healthy but I think our heat/humidity may be too much. Others here in my area have said she is slow to bloom. Mine has yet to bloom.
Hey Keith.....Emily in my garden stuggles with the heat too. We are in the same zone so I'm guessing it is the heat. If you can move her to morning sun and afternoon shade I bet you'll have a better rose. For me, I do not have that option in the my garden :0( Best of luck!!!
I just had the first two blooms on my princess Charlene and they had a very faint scent. Not sure if that's normal and if the scent will change with time?
Mine is very fragrant....maybe in time yours will become more powerful. I struggle with Emily Bronte and her fragrance. Most people say she has a very strong sent and for me she is weak. I guess it could be placement, watering, feedings. I would suggest more rose feed and if your are in a hot climate maybe water more often. I have had this rose for three years and this year she has been one of my lease productive roses, while in the last two years she was one of my best.
No dinging please...very annoying.
your daughter is adorable. Good at the camera also
Thank you....she wanted to be in the video so bad and she nailed it :0)
The fragrance may be enigmatic just like Emily. Ps. The portrait is of her eldest sister Charlotte and the book is Wuthering heights : a world classic.
Someday I'll check out the book and hopefully someday my EB is as fragrant as everyone else's.
Nice when else should we prune? Just once a yr? Im in zone 8b
The dings are ridiculous
Yeah, not my greatest moment LOL
I planted an Emily Bronte last year, have to say the fragrance is divine.
I'm still hopeful that mine will begin to show it's fragrance. 🤞
I can't even get a fork into it
Soak the ground deeply and keep stomping on that fork. Mine was just like yours when I started.
Eustacia Vye is a totally different rose, it is pink and coral and no comparison??!! Not sure how you can say they are the same
What I was referring to is the characteristics. Things like flower shape, thorns, the way they cut, growth patterns, etc. I have both and have vased both together. Believe me they are very very similar. I do realize the color is different.
@@intheglenn I disagree, my EV is very cupped and more compact. You should put them side by side for viewers. I just think your view is misleading.
Looks really nice! And you chose a great color :)
I thought it would look really good with the dark crimson rose color. Glad you thought so too!
Wow your wife is a lucky gal ! Beautiful ! Subscribed !
Just a warning Munstead Wood amazing, beautiful, best fragrance but she’s the thorniest rose ever 😅❤👌
Thank you for the heads up! I have Princess Anne and she's SUPER thorny too!
This is something we should all be talking about. Great video with great information.
Much appreciated
Lookin Good!
Thank you so much! Happy gardening!
A california fusia? I had no idea 😋
Yes, it's a plant that I barely even see here in California
I was looking for something a bit different and I found it.....thanks for the video!
I'm so glad. I def wanted to make a modern take on the old school Okbelisk.
Nice! Munstead Wood is going to look awesome in the planter. Deep crimson with the dark brown /gray, chefs kiss🧑🍳 😙🤌.
You nailed it......the grey/brown color was chosen because of how good I thought it would look with the Crimson.
New Sub! I like the planter, but the obelisk is what I'll be building this weekend.....super cool!
LOL....glad you found something you liked! :0)
This could not have come at a perfect time. I have two Austins coming shortly and I was hoping to find two square planters for the front of my home. Maybe I'll see if I can make these, especially for the price!!
Timing is everything! It was a very fun and simple build....wishing you the best!
Beautiful- first year - blooms - then twigs - contacted DA customer service for help and advice. Told me it was my fault for not potting it up soon enough. Not impressed.
I'm a huge DA fan, but their customer service is terrible.
@@intheglenn Shocked at their BLUNT response. Two roses, less than a year old. Wedding day and Emily Bronte. TWIGS. DA asked that I fill in a questionnaire, including date of purchase etc., and any rose feed ( which I purchased from them! ) We stand by our original decision, you didn’t pot it up soon enough.I love their roses, I am a HUGE fan, but clearly their loyal customers ( humble or otherwise ) mean nothing.Upsetting to be honest.
Just a note, by complete CONTRAST to David Austin, Garden Bargains, You Garden etc., now on QVC, treat their customers with respect. They appreciate your custom and loyalty. Replacement, refund, or ( more importantly) ADVICE offered immediately.
6-12 inches ✅🆗🫡
Can we get an update video on the hydrangeas, how big they got etc...
You gotta go to last years garden tour and check them out. They are amazing!! I will be including them in the garden tour this year. They are about 5 feet tall; whenever someone sees them, they immediately ask and want.
I agree EB is the most lack luster, dull, fades in 5 minutes, ho hum borging rose. EB is like school on sunday, NO CLASS
Emily def has a lot to offer, but I'm glad I am not the only one who doesn't find a scent.
Weird, isn't it?! I can't smell anything from Desdemona and a huge amount from Emily Bronte!!
@@romilly99 scent is as individual as fingerprints!
@country_boy_zone6b It most definitely is, which is wonderful really!!
@@romilly99 That very funny because Desdemona is amazing....the scent, the blooms, the color. I love her!! Emily, not so much LOL
I have Emily Brontë and she is the strongest smelling rose I have. I put her in my bedroom and her scent fills my entire room.
