English Subtitles Are Great for Learning Japanese
Contrary to the mainstream advice to turn on closed captions and watch Japanese content with Japanese subtitles, I argue that using English subtitles is more effective for learning Japanese if you're an intermediate or even an "advanced beginner."

Can I ask whats Your native language tho?😬 Just curious ^^
@@mayzavan I don't mind telling but I'd love to know what you think it is 😄
@baiburume im asking because im clueless 🤣
@mayzavan fair enough 😂 my native language is Estonian but what you're hearing is a combination of a few American English dialects and some British English dialect/accent as well 😅
@baiburume I woildve never guessed estonian 😶🌫️😶🌫️😶🌫️ Honestly never heard this language even though Estonia is not far 🤕
@mayzavan yup, it's not a very prevalent language overall 😆 also now I'm curious where "not far" is but I'm waving in your assumed general direction 👋💜😄
Very true i actually half learned the basics of japanese by watching anime all these years. while reading i do sometimes get confused by what they're saying and what the subtitles say because it's so different. Very nicely explained by you. Great video!
Thank you so much!! 💛I'm happy to hear that you were able to benefit from it even at the beginner level 🤩
@baiburume ALSO YOU ARE SOO TALENTED AND UNDERRATED MAY UR CHANNEL GROW IN THE FUTURE!!
@@Reistoomuch THANK YOUUU 😭💖💖💖
who just want to start learning japanese is there guide for that as i assume i have to take alphabet book of Japanese than see the sentence construction what you say about this
I agree that starting with learning hiragana and katakana is a good idea. Then you can start reading the subtitles on Japanese videos (the Japanese editing style has a lot of text). You won't be able to read the kanji yet, but you can read everything else. Here's an example of the videos I have in mind: th-cam.com/video/G_Uu1Uv7TOY/w-d-xo.html (They let ChatGPT write the script for their show and now they're following it.) If you also want to learn how to practice hiragana and katakana, I have an old video on that :) (Although it assumes that you have already learned them and need to practice the ones that are "shaky".) If you know enough hiragana then you'll probably start noticing that it is mainly used for grammar (が、の、です etc.). For grammar I recommend Tae Kim's guide guidetojapanese.org/learn/ Kaname Naito's videos on YT are also very useful. Once you have the basics down and know some words (which you can learn from Tae Kim's guide), then I recommend you start doing what I'm describing in the video. But even while studying hiragana and katakana, I recommend you listen to videos or podcasts in Japanese to get used to it. For this I recommend channels like Yuyu No Nihongo Podcast or the podcast/playlist "Japanese podcast for beginners (Nihongo con Teppei)". I wish you the best of luck :D Let me know if you have any more questions.
Thanks this was interesting to watch ^^
I'm so happy :) Thank you for letting me know!
@baiburume :DD
Holy... I am basically in the same situation as you. I live in a country where Russian is used a lot, but I didn't try to learn it. I had Russian classes at school but hated them with every fiber of my soul. I entertain the idea of studying it from time to time (I can somewhat understand most conversations but can't respond). Japanese has no practical use where I live, but a long time ago I was inspired to learn a language and chose Japanese as it is a "medium difficulty" language compared to Chinese(Hardest) and Korean(Easier), but then Light Novels and anime made me want to learn it more. Been studying Japanese seriously for half a year now, and I came to love it's elegance. BDW your poem is very beautiful! ^_^
Wow, I'm so happy! Thank you! I didn't write it to be relatable, so this is a nice surprise :) Thanks for sharing!
maybe using the word, or the words that you have learned in a sentence in the day, for a little example, let's say you have learned this word 面倒くさい「めんどくさい」which you would really use it as "what a pain!" trying to use it in your day, maybe only for 3 or 4 days, it will stuck right there, just whenever someone ask you about something, say 面倒くさいなああ。。 and it's fine nobody will get it, unless they are not Japanese 😅.
Yes, using the words is so important! I've been slacking with language production since my formal lessons ended, but I'm trying to get myself back on track! :')
I forgot to mention this, but if your device or file has good enough audio quality, there's no need to add the compressor effect. :)
Hi, when watching japanese shows i am almost sentence mining every sentence. Its takes up a lot of time and i feel like im not enjoying the show. Is that normal and do you have face the same issue?
Are these all words or sentence constructions you want to learn or see yourself using? I'd recommend sentence mining only if it's a word you're encountering for the 3rd time and still don't know what it means. (Sorry for the late reply!)
@@baiburume No worries. I realised I was engaging in content that is way above my current level when I should be focusing on "i + 1" instead.
Don't save every word, you obviously wont know them at the beginning. Just listen to it and you'll get some information in because of context. BUT if you hear something more than twice and you FEEL like you need it, DO IT! That's a catch. Do this and you won't get tired and you will enjoy the show. Also, if you want to know what I do, I made a video about it. - Sorry for the plug 😅
@@pablodm9 No worries : ) Thanks for the tips though!

How long have u been learning Japanese?
I learned with Memrise when I was 15 or so and then at university for 4 semesters. I haven't had any lessons this year (granted I wanted a take a break as well), but I'm back to studying now. Sometimes it's kind of hard to be motivated when schoolwork takes up so much time already, but I try :)
@baiburume I see wat u mean finding that balance in time management is no easy task but....... we gotta keep learning and reach FLUENCY!!!!!😅😅
@@LodStom I'm with you on that one :D
Keep going!
I will :)
Do you test with English on the front, Kanji on the front, kana on the front, or audio on the front? 😂😂. If anyone knows a slick Korean dictionary app that does or mostly does what she described (IE does word lists and lets you export them) please let me know.
If you generate the deck automatically with Takoboto, it will test you both ways (iirc). :) Sorry, I don't know about any similar apps for Korean -- maybe try asking on the r/Korean subreddit?
I was using a premade vocab deck and in that deck you had cards with one word which had three to four meanings in the back of the card. I never managed to properly remember all meanings so I thought maybe sentence cards by separating the different meanings of the same word might work better for learning. Just the word on the front cannot provide enough context for remembering which definition you are looking to recall. And if you try to recall all of them it's much harder to do (should I press again if I only remembered 2 of 4 different meanings?)
That's the dilemma! I usually get frustrated and am happy with one correct answer :D (most of the time, you can kind of guess the other meanings from context).
i rly like "もしもしゆすけ" its kinda of a vlog in the streets of japan, but he don't talk that much, anyways is comfy
Thank you for sharing :)
You say the name of the channels in the video, but I can’t find a list of the channel names in the desc- it would be helpful because I can’t always hear the names clearly. Could you post a list somewhere? お願いします!

They're in the description now!
theres anki addons that do this for you, very inefficient
I'm sure there are :) I've found that the card sticks with me better if I spend more time on it and give it a little bit more love. This also ensures that I don't bite off more than I can chew. But if addons work for you just fine, more power to you.
what is it called?
Super helpful, Thank you!
I'm glad it helped <3
I use Yomichan + Anki connect and can literally create sentence cards with audio and pitch accent graphs at the click of a button. Sure sometimes I have to manually edit the card but it's still just a matter of seconds. Finding trustworthy translations isn't that hard either, since we have multi-language subtitles on Netflix or even streaming platforms with dual subtitles like a certain melon. So I think the only factor that matters should be whether or not someone finds sentence cards beneficial to one's learning progress.
yeah I've started with vocab cards but I think I will transition to sentence cards now... the problem I have is with words that have multiple meanings. For example word "draft" has 7+ different meanings. Putting it all into single anki card and trying to remember all of that without context is very hard and counter-productive. It is much better to split this into 7+ different cards, each with a sentence that showcases different meaning and usage. So for example "they drank some draft beers in the evening yesterday" or "he saved the draft of his document not to lose his progress" etc.
Yes! This is a real concern. I've also moved back to sentence cards haha
@@baiburume oh no! Did you make a video about that?
really helpful thank u
Yay! Glad it helped :)
still I don't think it replaces sentence cards completely, but very cool to make cards really fast
Yup! It's quick and dirty ;)
very cool but it doesn't seem to add the audio, also would love to get rip of the duplicate, English to Japanese seems unnecessary, I like the format word kana only to English and the kanji reading recall to English
I agree, it's quite annoying if you don't want that :/
With ShareX is much more easy to record audio and add to Anki.
you have one of the most lovely english accents ive heard
Aww, thank you so much :)
Are you using Basic and Reversed Card type in Anki or just basic as default?
Doing this changes the card type to jp.takoboto, which is its own thing entirely. You can change it to basic and choose what info to keep on the front and back (reading or meaning, for example; the takoboto card type has everything).
thanks
You're welcome :)
tysm!!
I'm glad it was helpful :)
this is lovely, im so related to this. Smooth decks
Thank you :)
Personally wouldnt do this, seems to long but is cool that you are sharing
Thanks for watching and commenting 💖it does take long, I stopped making these often too (but there was a time I finished studying and just spent a few hours sentence mining and creating these cards)
Since you can automate almost all of the Card making process with a lot of software today, I don't think it's enough of an strong argument on why Vocab Cards are more effective, I believe that the reason why Vocab Cards are more effective is that when you're SRSing a Card you're not just SRSing the word but you're also arguably SRSing the context of the show so when you start reading the Sentence Card, they're is a high chance that before you even read the whole sentence or maybe even before you read the word that u mined, you already are gonna know the the context of the show so you're already are gonna know the meaning of the word, so when you have Sentence Cards there is a good chance that you are basically "bypassing" the SRS process for the word, which is also why I think people find Sentence Cards easier then Vocab Cards and why is why I think that Sentence Cards are a bit counter intuitive.
Sure, you can automate it if you're the type who doesn't mind downloading extra software or writing code (or learning to write it). The way I make sentence cards is so complex to me that I haven't even thought about trying. True, automation would get rid of the personal attachment to the hard work. Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts! :)
I'm not a programmer (yet) lol, but if anyone is interested about software that u could use like migaku but free i have made 2 videos on how to set up those particular types of software, (watched all of you're videos and they're pretty interesting, underrated channel btw)@@baiburume
You could also use asbplayer to automate all this
Thanks! If I ever come back to sentence cards, I'll be sure to check it out :)
I actually use asbplayer and memento, if anyone is interested on how to set those up i have made videos on them (btw they're free and open-source for everyone)@@baiburume
I'm about to make my own anki deck too and I really want to see more of these videos. Simple but effeciency. Keep up😊
Thank you! I'll make one soon (sorry for the super late reply, TH-cam didn't send me a notification smh)
wait it wont let me driop the file into audacity
Well this is annoying but I believe we can fix this :) I suspect the problem is that you do not have FFmpeg libraries installed. In Audacity go to Edit -> Preferences -> Libraries and then download it (or you can google for a tutorial if that's more comfortable). This should allow you to drop MP4 files directly into audacity (without needing to change the file extension). Please let me know if this fixes the problem :)
thannks a lot! this is very useful
