    5 Gallons £1.65 !! I'd just started driving in 1969/70 and can remember a gallon rocketing to 50p during the '73/'74 oil crisis, I had a 1967 2 litre Triumph Vitesse convertible, wire wheels and overdrive, which I clocked up more miles pushing (for lack of fuel at pumps) rather than driving - I still have my ration book. A pair of TR6's with O/D for 28 years, and finally in 2024 an MGB GT with O/D and never suffering an O/D fault on any of them ever.

      Ah thanks for that nuts spanner man ! You have had helluva motoring time , the overdrive was a great innovation and saved fuel . I can remember a gallon costing 4/11 ! That was in the era of Green shield stamps and cigarette coupons ! I love the MGB , breaks down a bit , usually from overheating , but on a normal country run , it’s great !

    That brought back memories of the late 1950s. early '60s. We used to go as a family for a day out and I went in the evenings to watch the Aces in the speedway. I would have been 10 or 11 at the time, and a group of us went on our own without adult supervision. A few decades earlier my mother's cousin, Norman Hartley, rode with the Aces. The story was when he couldn't afford to pay his workers he'd go to Belle Vue to try and win some cash. With his brother Vincent they started Hartley's Greenhouses which still exists today as Hartley Botanic.

    Glad but sad! The black and white images make me feel so old. As I child I recall asking for or anticipating BELLE VUE visits. The sights and the sounds were magic to us as children, the animals we would never have seen otherwise. Looking back at the different "natural habitat" zoo's I have visited since there is a sadness to what was considered normal at the time and the stark environments in which animals were displayed or survived. Even the little people boxing makes me feel sad that there was a little bit of a Ripley's believe it or not! aspect to BELLE VUE I never saw as a child.

      Yes it is . I find speedway so exciting to watch . A fair chance over the next two or three years we could get Swindon , Coventry , Wolves , back on track and possibly a team at Northampton now they are revamping their stadium !

    Those bikes were single cylinder (probably JAP (J.A Prestwich of Tottenham), engines, 500cc, running on alcohol with no brakes, Happy Days!

    Hi Roy Have you got any footage of me from 1977 ?? Eastbourne or Wimbledon?

      @roynicol8353 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Colin for the message . That is all the 1977 footage I have got , but I think Retro Videos have a lot of 70's stuff , they advertise in the Speedway Star and have a website I would imagine ....

      The Gorton Monastrey have a few good Belle Vue Zoo displays and sometimes have talks there and bits of video showing . Helps to keep the memories of the Zoo Gardens alive . Yes , maybe Peel Holdings could build a zoo . There were rumours of the possibility of one , near to the AJ Bell Rugby League stadium , the other side of the Barton Bridge !!

    Love it! I was a Rye House and White City fan in ‘77, so that ended well for me! Seeing Les Collins and Michael Lee going at it in this video was fantastic. Two rising stars at the time. Michaels progress each year was immense and we all knew he was going to be World Champion, even as he came through at Boston. I absolutely love these days of speedway. ‘76 to ‘80, unforgettable, larger than life days.

      Thanks Paul for the comments . Is Rye House stadium still up and running ? I am just glad I filmed what I could with this match and glad I managed to salvage it and make something worth watching . Been a fan since 1967 and looking forward to Belle Vue Aces this season . Kings Lynn seem to have turned the corner which is good for the sport !

      @@roynicol8353 I think I heard that it is about to be built on, but I am not certain of this. It’s been a while since I saw it. Yes, I’m glad you captured this too. Lots of history with these two. Loving the National stadium and wish them both well.

    Lovely! A wonderful evocation of slower and simpler times, and how neat and tidy everyone and everyplace looked , despite people then having fewer material possessions. Did we go wrong somewhere along the line?

      Ah thanks . It was a great place to chill out and relax especially around the Zoo enclosures . You were sort of coocooned in a different world . The small monkey house was our favourite animal attraction and when I got a bit older I got quite hooked on the speedway !
