In this episode of History on the Fly, Al uses an old treadle sewing machine converted into a foot-drive rotary vise by Gretchen's father more than 85 years ago. The program gives the viewer an informed look at commercial fly tying from the 30s (maybe earlier) through the early 80s. Take a few minutes to enjoy a look at history you will not find anywhere else on TH-cam.

    a little trick to forcing it to spin in the direction you want is to put your hand on the back drive wheel(the one on the top back of the machine) and give it a kick in that direction in coordination with the foot pedal. this is a really interesting use of an old treadle sewing machine!

    I’m about to tie a batch of Deep Sparkle & Emergent Sparkle Pupas. I learned to tie them in a class taught by Gary in 1990 just after Caddiflies was published. This was before beads became popular,and Gary used lead wire wrapped in the middle of the hook. Certainly beads are faster & easier than wrapping wire but the middle placement does affect how the fly sinks or lifts in the water. Do either of you feel it makes any difference to the fish? I’ve only fished it with wrapped wire & am no longer able to fish & test flies on the water myself. Love all the tips on both flies. The Double Wing is coming next on my tying list. Thank you to you both.

      Hi FlyTyer1948, Because the body is inside of the sparkle pupa "bubble,'" the placement of the wire inside the body makes no difference. In thinking about it, the bead in front should make no difference as long as the body is inside a sparkle pupa bubble. Tight Lines - Al Beatty

      @albeatty1404 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi RRR, You'll notice in the video the two weight sizes I have are 1/4 oz & 1/16 oz because the weights are different lengths. The longer ones need to be cut off. I had to take a spool of thread to the store with me to be sure the weights I was purchasing were not too big in diameter. At one time in the past years, I found a spool of very heavy lead type wire that was just the right diameter to fit in a spool easily. I've looked everywhere in recent years for another spool and have had no luck in finding another.
