An absolute classic of Studio Ghibli. Chances are if you're a Ghibli fan, you've probably heard this piece at some point. A true genius of composition, Joe Hisaishi evokes a sense of eternity in this piece, painting the melodies with dissonances (1:35, 1:58) that represent the ups and downs of life. Quite fitting considering he released this piece at the age of 51. It's almost as if every year I come back to listen to this piece, I discover something new, a message hidden behind the melodies of wisdom that Joe Hisaishi has gifted us. When I first heard this piece, I knew I had to learn it on piano. Even as suggested by the title, it symbolises a deep yearning for something to happen. In all our lives, we've had times when we deeply desire something, and no matter how hard we try, we cannot make it happen. In my opinion, this song represents that feeling quite well. For example, in 0:10 and 0:37, the dissonance in the left hand (G followed by G Sharp) represents the clash between expectation and reality. However, this is quickly followed by some hopeful transition at 0:47 where we finally resolve into an F major. Ultimately, this reminds us that hard times are only temporary, and are eventually resolved if we persist in the challenges life throws at us. This was one of the first pieces I've ever learnt on piano many years ago, and it's one of those pieces that you recognise straight away, as one of the classics of the instrument. Being one of the most popular Chopin pieces, this lovely tune persists in the passage of time, a melody so universal to every piano player and listener worldwide. I've performed this piece at my high school music festival once, and although I've played it many times ever since, I still could not get over the beauty and emotion this piece evokes in me.
