Where did you get the boat canopy for the compac 16 because it looks really nice to have and I can’t find one anywhere
Came with it
Hi, by now you have at least another season under your belt. Single handing a small boat is truly a joy. Maybe yove done this already, set you boat up on starboard tack, let the main draw jut a bit and st the tiller so the boat’s tendency is to bear off. Adjusting those two impurs, the main trimmed towrd the center line, and the rudder directing the boat to bear off, you will find a point of balance. Et Viola! You’re hove-to. In such a state you can make a sandwich, take a quick nap, raise you jib or maybe do a little fishing. You can do it on any tack.this is how lobstermen fished under sail. Best of luck.
America by UK birth and nature are a pirate/parasitic economy.
Great video i think. Its a reminder to keep your eyes open for the disrespectful people on the lake. And as a new to sailing guy, helps me understand what kind of wind im going to aim for . 10 mph or less to start seems safe for lake ontario. Love my newport 16
In your opinion, what his HBL mean when he says.. “to die game?”
Drop a small anchor, which will cause you to point into the wind. Then, raise your sails and pull your anchor up.
Sailed a Compac 16 for years on Pa. lakes and the Chesapeake Bay flats. Great small boat to learn how to sail under all conditions. The book “Handbook of Trailer Sailing” is a good read because the author had a Compac 16.
Thank you for the information and the time to do such research.
Can u tilt the engine out of the water, that's got to be a big drag.
Спасибо за материал!!! Надо бы латы вставить.
Just a note about photography: try try to move less jerky. Your content was great but if you watch. I almost got fussy .. what kind of camera were you using ( Go Pro ) or something with super-wide angle ?!! The super wide does include a lot but also photographically bend straight lines like bowed shroud that are nice n straight.. Slow movement please. Thankz buddy. Papa J
Thoughts from a dinghy sailor: Is your boat supposed to have a vang/kicking strap? I couldn’t see one, and it looked like your boom was bouncing up and down more than necessary. Also it looks like your outhaul is permanently tied, rather than being adjustable once you’re under way by being routed from the sail to a pulley at the end of the boom and then back along the boom to the cleat that seems currently unused. And I agree with another commenter that it might be good to have some telltales on the shrouds, and a birgee at the top of the mast to show you the wind direction. And also some telltales would be good on both sides of the jib which, if positioned correctly, can give you very precise guidance while you’re sailing close to the wind on exactly how close to the wind you can get (or how close-hauled to set the sails) before you end up “in irons”. This is all meant as positive encouragement, not criticism. It was great to see your video and you sailing - it’s been a while since I was able to get out and sail myself. Thanks.
No vang, outhaul can only be tied down. Very simple set up, only so much you can do.
Thanks for the video. I just bought a 1980 Com-Pac 16 and had it out on one voyage. As a beginning sailer, your video was very helpful to get some tips. Thanks,
Fun Meter LOL
May I suggest that in high winds, close your hatches in case of a knockdown. You are still a heck of a sailor. There seemed to be a unusual amount of fools out that day in motor boats.
You kept the boat flat the entire time. You need to run the lines aft. You did a splendid job. You are an excellent sailor.
Oh My Gosh!!! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much fumbling around in all my life!!! Pull those sheets in and move along. Good grief!!!
Would recommend a loose foot for better main control in various wind conditions and a traveler across the back. A good thing to do if your main needs repairs. Bartlett's is just down the street. I'm looking to get a 16 or 19' com-pac soon. My first tweeks will be running the halyards to the cockpit and down haul for the jib. Raise the boom hight for bimini sailing. Don't forget the sailboat shop is next to Bartlett's on Hudson Bend. Great guys and lots of parts. Found A.S.S. yet?
Lake travis marina! I'm 5 minutes away! If you need a hand ping me!
Looks like lake Travis! Looks like the typical credit card boaters messing up a perfect day! Many a day dodging GDMFPB's and AYC "racing".
Yup, its Travis.
I enjoyed your video we bought a Venture 21 last fall a winter project can't wait for spring to go sailing for the first time.
I recommend an electric trolling motor over the gas kicker. Alot lighter, no gas or oil to worry about, no wondering if its going to start next spring without rebuilding the carb. We bought the cheap 99 dollar electric trolling motor from wally world with a little lawn mower battery, and it pushed our compac just fine. Besides that, if the boom happens to be swinging around a bit when you go to pull-start it, its possible to bash your elbow against the end of the boom. Doesn't feel too good.
Trolling motors are okay most of the time but conditions on this lake can change instantly! You absolutely don't want to be on lake Travis with only a trolling motor when the SHF! Been there done that! Winds on Travis can go from nothing 50 to 70 knots, as your marina recently proved it can be devastating!
Love the first person view. Beautiful lake too. 👍🏼#18
The comapc 16 is supposed to be for heavy winds but I find mine hard to control in a blast. Always wants to heel right over and you have to turn away from the wind fast and depower the sail or you are done. I put reefing points in my sail and had them reinforced. The roller reefing is terrible.
steer into it. its not gonna capsize.
I just watched your Indian pirate video, I liked it and am happy to subscribe.
i still want one. thnx
I would add telltails to your shroud lines to better gauge your wind direction. What works great is go to the store and buy garden tape used to tie plants up with. It is cheap strong and works perfect. I love your video. I am looking to purchase a com pac 16 as i just sold my o’day widgeon 12 footer. Fair winds to you.
I just tie threads to the shrouds for tells. Basically free and quickly replaceable.
I think the old fella is making some very valid points - which you seem to be wilfully ignoring. His point is (and he is right) it was not only black people who were victims of slavery AND there were more white slaves than black slaves. Which of these facts do you reject?
That’s not his point. His point is we shouldn’t care about American chattel slavery. I never disagree with the points you are pretending to make, but you’re not engaging with the point of either video.
Was it the camera or were those shrouds super loose?
Nice video, good job taking it easy with just the main, shows you have at least some common sense! Once the mast is up, those shrouds should get a good tightening down. Enjoy!
That was a powerful blow for the ole Compac under full sail. Try reefing the main a bit next time and she'll be easier to handle under such conditions. She's missing her batons, too (which is understandable. The first time we took our compac out, it started flipping the batons right out of the pockets first time the sails luffed a bit). Would be a great day to raise just the jib and blow downwind after a long day of tacking upwind. The compac's a wonderful downwind rocker with just a jib or genoa.
I hooked some string up and tied mine so they can't get lost after the 3rd time. Gotta be creative. You do need those though or your sail gets deformed.
Ahhhhh some right of doing of boat without drink water., Of so new 2021. Of learning thing. Two dots, like i ah for some.

dope
Thanks . Enjoyed the video. Entertaining and informative.
why so many tacks?
Narrow lake.
With some accidental tacts sprinkled in as well? Backwind the jib and let it pull the bow around and overshoot the tack a bit. Overshooting gives quicker power up and more time to trim without stalling out.
Nice sailing
Thanks!
OMG rasing that main was soo easy!!! Earlier this year I got outbid on a compac eclipse. I'm still kicking myself over. But I bought a catalina 25 which I am having alot of fun on but for raising the main and jib you need to put your back into it and you need winches.
Yea, I wanted to start on something I could mostly handle with brute strength.
If you can pull in the jib sheet quicker on a tack (lessening flapping around), I’ve found it reduces the likelihood the sheets get hung up on the halyard cleats on my own 16. Also, when tacking, wait until you see the wind backfill the jib, then uncleat and quickly sheet in and cleat the opposite jib sheet.
Hello to Die Game, a decent video but if I can add some pointers for you and this I hope is taken as just that and safety reason too, because i started just like you. You are doing just fine. First keep your bungee chords on your sails until you deploy them. Simply throw them into your companionway entrance while you raise the sails. But I think a simple "Tiller Clutch" would help you immensely. It allows you to take a break while heading into the wind to set your sails, use your phone, get water go to the bathroom even or whatever you need to do while sailing alone. It's been a big plus for me. It's very reasonable and I highly recommend it. I also would recommend tightened main and jib sails more than just one or two twist on the cleat. This will be a big surprised to you when something jars loose and someone gets hurt especially if your alone. So please secure your halyards much better than the film shows. Also I couldn't hear much being an old fart, and due to the wind and again not your fault, but was your keel all the way down? My last suggestion would be to place a block and tackle set up for ether at the end of your boom or in the middle. The boom was rocking quite a bit but for me it also will help you through any bad Jibe situations. You can simply lock it in and after your tacking, just simply slowly let it go into position port or starboard direction. I never have an issue with an out of control boom anymore. So please I am not berating you or lowering you at all, I think your doing wonderful, I am simply adding some helpful items and tips to make your sailing so much easier and also safer! All my respect to you and I'm glad to see more and more sailors out there like You! Stay Safe my friend! Ps if you need a pic of those items let me know!
The compac 16, 19 and 23 have fixed shoal draft keels ballasted with concrete (18 inch draft in the case of the 16 here, 400 pound ballast). There's no adjusting them. Incredibly stable, self-righting and self-bailing. The cockpit floor is above the waterline so any water that does somehow manage to get in there runs out on its own. Mine was like a big tippy clown, you'd have a hard time capsizing it if you tried.
All good advice !
Tighten up the luffs, swig them up ENJOY.
relax god damn
Like you I am learning (re-learning?) on a 16’ boat. My is an older Newport16. Mine has a main, Jib, and an electric motor. It seems to me that your main is not tight as it could be. A big help for me is my main has a reefing point in it. So when it gets to sporty I can de-power. It is no fun being terrified of knock down in relatively light winds so the reef really helps. I agree with a previous comment to hank on the jib at the doc. We use a bungee loop to keep the jib tied down until we want to raise it. Overall your doing a great job. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video. Thanks.
Nice
Thanks!
Tighten your sails a little, Plus hank on the jib at the mooring and fasten it to the deck, saves you acrobatics in open water!
yeah, a lesson i learned this time. When i started out I was expecting bigger winds, so i was just going to use the main, but then the winds came later.
Awesome
