TAWQ, Horenstein Quintet 3
Quintet No. 3, “When One Door Closes, Another Opens” by Stephen Horenstein, performed by the Tel Aviv Wind Ensemble May, 2024 | World Premiere
I. Dialogues
II. Free Flow
III. First Flashes Return and Fade
The composition envisions a journey where doors keep opening then closing as part of a journey from echoes of the composer's past. His first musical sounds at age four included his mother's daily piano playing Chopin, Beethoven and Boogie Woogie. He would sit under the Baldwin upright listening and daydreaming. The piece utilizes gaps of silence (what the Japanese call "Ma") as well as a language of pantonality, sudden shifts and transformations of key.
The Tel Aviv Wind Quintet:
Hagar Shahal - flute | Dmitry Malkin - oboe | Danny Erdman - clarinet/bass clarinet | Itamar Leshem - horn | Nadav Cohen - bassoon
