Yes, they are to show intention. Often times we will shout “ya” before beginning a technique as a way of warning the person receiving the technique (called the motodachi) that we are about to begin. This is because motodachi are expected to perform a certain way so you can perform the technique so it helps them prepare. We also call out strikes to show intention. Part of the scoring system is that you have to show your technique being successful wasn’t an accident but an intentional action you made. Part of doing so is calling out your strike at the moment of impact. It also helps you generate power and receive the impact of your strike (i.e. why boxers will do a sort of “ts” sound when hitting). It also has a more esoteric reason. Another part of these are that they are budo, which means the way of the warrior. There are quite a few budo arts and a major focus of them is to foster a “warrior spirit”. Shouting is seen as a way of displaying your spirit and will to fight. It shows you are confident in your technique and in your skill. It can also be intimidating to have someone scream in your face so you are both showing you are an intimidating threat and that you are resilient when another is trying to intimidate you.

I'm sorta a late comer too! There are still only a couple of dojo in the UK! Seems like this is still a super niche form.

@@akumabakemono1447 There are always those who do not understand form (kata) - show me any martial art that - superficially - does not look 'silly' to the uninitiated. Yet - ironically - Jukendo and Tankendo are the two forms which have most recently been practiced in actual warfare... When was the last time the majority of forms were practised on the actual battlefield? :)

It may look silly because it doesn’t serve a porpouse now a days, but back in the day it was really useful

It was when the Samurai were using it, today not so much. However some of the throws seen here exist in Judo so a very small amount can be modified and adapted for modern usage.

In the past, the concept of mma was the norm. A Ryu was a combination of different fighting styles - including kenjutsu, jujutsu, taijutsu, honojutsu (what you see in the video - arresting techniques), etc. The jujutsu is basically the same today (Judo, BJJ) - as it was back then. The only difference being, Judo remove many of the techniques to make it easier (BJJ came from Judo).

these aren't combatives, this is modern budo

It's *do*, not *jutsu*. It isn't meant to simulate a combat situation at all.

They won't have the strength to thrust an M4 or M14 or M16 in that manner, those are like brook sticks that its almost weightless, the M16 itself is easily 3Kg...and most of the techniques are covered during basic military training for the infantry especially..

For one thing, jukendo is for Arisaka Type 38 rifles and older, so M4 replicas won't cut it. Second, this is a demonstration, they stop so we can see things.

Nonsense, take a hit like that without armour even with a wooden rifle and you are in the hospital.

We just had a training session with Baptist Tavernier the European gentleman you see in this video. He showed us some Jukendo (bayonet fencing) and Tankendo (unmounted bayonet or knife fencing). It was a lot of fun. Very good stuff!

To my knowledge, the only group in the US is located in NJ, under a man named Miek Stoss (might have the wrong last name - it is a Miek though). The equipment is mostly Kendo bogu, which you can get at e-bogu, I have read that in competitions they have a special Do (breastplate) that's more built up on the left side, since you get hit there more often. Highly doubt you can get that in the US.

Some grupos of historical fencing study bayonnet fencing as depicted in xviii to xix century military manuals. Moves are different from those in jukendo which according to a nhk video came from adapting french systems to japanese martial lance tradition, also the techniques and approaches vary depending on the author. There used to be sportive competitions in the west.

M E I was able to get one of the breastplates from an online kendo supply website. I had to send an email. They do not have it listed as an item on their site but told me they can get me anything I need from their suppliers in Japan. I purchased it with no big deal. I suggest anyone looking for the supplies for the sport email kendo supply stores.

​@@ME-hm7zmthere is a similar sport, pugil sticks,invented by the US army, there might be a club near you. Otherwise i'd suggest learning kendo and attending every seminar/workshop you can attend, as you might meet jukendo experts this way.
