Its archery season here in Texas! I'm headed out to a bedding area trying to catch bucks either feeding on acorns working there way back to bedding or standing up mid day to stretch those legs. DIY Scrape Kit for Southern Hunters | Tips & Tactics!
Hello there! I realize this is a long time after this video was posted, but do you still use this 'sheet? Has it evolved? I just bought a chunk of private land in Ontario Canada and started logging data. You've got some additional columns I'll add. Eventually once I have more data, I plan on running pivot tables. For example, show me all the times the deer entered based on direction by time of day. Also, how many sightings on I had based on month. Adding the month in a column before your dates will allow that to happen. Very cool to have data. People may think it's geeky, but data can be powerful.
I did not update this last year to be honest. However, I still refer to it with in relation to the spots I have recorded. Two of the spots I recorded a harvest one this year and one last year. I just love being able to look back at the details and see what nugget you may get. Do you have any suggestions for things to add or how to keep this streamlined?
Got my first TPL doe this week. Recharged and pumped up to go after a buck.
Heck yea man congrats! Stay after em!
Why would you even post this? that is completely embarrassing you would even take a shot that bad having known you weren't prepared to shoot at that distance. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Hunting East Texas is tougher than one might think.. I started hunting it this year and so far, I have been close, just not bow close. Hopefully that changes this month, Today marks the 1sta day of the second season, I am looking forward to it, May be hearing out in the morning if all goes well. Have church today. and teaching Sunday School. so wont be heading out until tomorrow. A good clean miss is always better in my mind that option b,. We have all been there friend, it happens. That's always fun, I love seeing them and you got some great footage of the deer moving through. If it helps ar all, I still get excited, I have some age on you, and I always said, when I dont get excited anymore I will stop hunting, and, well, 40 years since I started, I am still getting excited. I have always used a 4 or 5 pin sight, 38 is a tough range, lots of folks wouldn't even shoot at one the far with a bow. Good luck on the rest of your season. New sub and look forward to some more East Texas Hunts, That 2 am comes early doesn't it. Good Luck, and have a blessed week my friend, Dale
Thanks Dale! Yea I hope the feeling never goes away. It’s what keeps me going. lol it’s ok if it gets in the way sometimes you know. Yes these piney woods are tough! It certainly takes some time and persistence
@@theskinnypinehuntingco.6346 My buddy just called, he got one this morning, I am hoping to get out this week, waiting on some parts for the new bow so I can get it up and shooting, I may end up going with the old bow, I have yet to find what I would call really good sign, so I am still looking for that as well, :) Keep up the great work friend and good luck. Dale
Glad to see your footage man, waiting for your part 2! I got one in the Sam on 11/26!
Heck yea congrats! That’s a tough chore for sure! Part / is ready and will post within the next day or two. Thanks for watching!
Smoked that green lmao
Rudy who lol..legend in his own mind .😂 jk
I gotta give credit where credits due. For Penny being a "greenhorn" in the hunting woods she's definitely got it! Give her another 2 or 3 seasons of trial and errors shes gonna be at the top of her game! You guys are awesome. keep grinding and bringing us fellow TX public hunters your great content! My hats off to all 3 of you 👊
@@JunkyardGardener she’s chewing up that learning curve that’s for sure. Thanks for the great feedback!
That rifle at 5:58 looks like a Remington 700ADL. I have the same rifle although I gave it to my son back in the 90's. That buck you showed is as good as it gets in East Texas. I live in Tyler County just to your east, the other side of Livingston and we see deer like that sometimes.
I'd be crying too lol. It's called "huntin". Suck it up and move on to the next hunt. You got your whole life in front of you. I'm 78 and killed my first deer in 1957. Hunted most of my life here in Tyler County and grew up dog huntin, but hunt on my son's place outside Mason now. Not really huntin, but it's fun and plenty of deer. Talkin about not getting it right and screwing everything up, well that could be a lack of focus on what's important. If Christ is not your focus, then life is hard, but when Christ is first, then this stuff comes easy and is more enjoyable. I too have learned this the hard way. Hate to see you make that mistake because it seems you put too much importance on hunting. God bless.
Access..... learn to walk with toes first hitting ground. Not heel to toe, walk toe to heel. Try it and listen to the difference, makes similar sound as a deer walking.
Congratulations
Got my first doe on public land this weekend in east texas . The buck just never gave me a clear shot . Love this public land hunting .
Heck yeah, good job guys! I'm in mauriceville by orange on a lease. Would love to try public!
Man there is some GREAT hunting out your way. I know a local Taxidermist out that way and he takes in some huge deer locally!
@theskinnypinehuntingco.6346 yeah a few good ones come out of the lease every year. Alot of pressure and fewer and fewer deer as years have gone by. I'd be willing to hike a mile into public just to try it. I can saddle from a tree and see what happens.
I just got one out of there as well. I gotta go across the street into walker county now. Can't wait
And kill another mature buck meaning two mature bucks in the Sam Houston national Forest?
That's true passion there! Great job brother!
Deer keep getting the slip on me. They are always just one step ahead always. I have been hunting this buck all season. Today was the real day I actually got in his bedroom. I blew it. The pressure is inching in closer. I feel I may have missed my opportunity today. Going to wait on this cold front to come in and give it a week of rest. Hopefully Friday he slips. If I don’t connect. I am going to have to look for greener pastures. Before I blow the spot.
Any more encounters with him? Weather was prime the last few days.
@ brother. I went out there on Friday and there was no activity around in that area. So he has been educated. Fingers crossed he doesn’t die. Gonna switch gears and move to a different area. After the season is over i am going to do a lot of post season scouting to get some more spots in my repertoire.
@@rich_pinard243 Still plenty of good hunting out there man if you have the time start venturing out looking for that hot sign. Go out after some fresh rain find those heavy doe trails, feed sign, and stay with it bro!
❤❤❤
Well done! Congratulations!
I’m creep around a little bit more might be able to put eyes on a buck
Got in the car ready go the second I get a chance
3 year hunting TX public First year hunting Sam got one sit in so far. Can’t wait to start seeing some deer here and accomplish my public land buck goal.
Stay with it man! It will happen!
Awesome deer man!
Was that this year and if you don't mind me asking, where
I've been hunting in Sam for over 10 years now.. In that time I have only ever seen 1... ONE.. buck that met the antler restrictions.. I was able to shoot that buck and have mounted him... That was the HARDEST won buck in my entire hunting life.. Anyways.. Some things I've learned about hunting in Sam... The deer are SUPER amped up at all times due to the immense hunting pressure. The average age of deer I've seen (bucks) is about 1-3 years of age.. I know where several doe bedding areas are and could shoot a doe every year that I got a tag for one.. I could literally drive out 1 hour before sunset, kill a doe, gut her, and be on my way back to Houston within a couple hours... Bucks? Not so much. I've learned that in order to see/kill deer in Sam, you either have to do a lot of scouting, or just have dumb luck. Even when you scout during the summer there is no guarantee that once deer season starts-and the shooting begins-that deer will still be using those trails you identified earlier in the year. Game cameras show that as soon as the hunting season starts and more hunters are tromping through the woods the deer mostly go nocturnal. I've had my best luck hunting from a climbing stand. I find that going at minimum 15 feet up, and also picking a tree that is close in cover with other trees. If you pick a tree that is standing out on it's own with no natural cover-these deer WILL see you. The bad news.. These deer have the best eye-sight of any pack of deer I have ever seen. You must be mannequin/stone still in order for them to not see you. Even then, you better be blending into trees, bushes, grass, fallen tree, something around you... I've had doe walking towards my location and they never knew I was there.. One thing I've learned that has helped me immensely about knowing when a deer is close by.. If suddenly mosquitoes start bombing into your eyes, nose, and mouth when a few minutes before there were no mosquitoes-DO NOT MOVE to swat the mosquitoes as this is a dead give-a-way that there is a deer within shooting range... Seriously.. The # of times I've been frozen like a pop-sicle in my tree stand only to suddenly have 500 mosquitoes start flying directly into my eyes and I've used my hand to try and swat them away only to hear a deer blow like a freight train horn and run off... and it had been standing within spitting distance the whole time. If mosquitoes start flying in your face all of a sudden-you have a deer close by. It's like natures way of protecting the deer. I know it sounds crazy, but the next time you go to swat mosquitoes and a deer blows and runs away you will believe. I've hunted other properties for deer and find that Sam is by far the hardest place to hunt deer I have ever visited. It's close, and free, so I keep going.. But when I get desperate and need to kill a deer it's the LAST place I would think to go-unless I have a doe tag... You will trip over doe every where you go..
shit happens don't sweat it bro every one has bad days
Price point makes it a hard pass for me!!
@@theohiooutdoors2444 yes sir it’s definitely a little high. I’m probably spending 250$ less to carry 3-4 more pounds myself 🤣

Nice! Great job man!
I love your videos man, try so hard to learn from them 🙏 been in the Sam the last couple of years and have had dozens of deer pictures mostly at night but never end up seeing any when I am in the stand. I honestly get so super jealous seeing you have these run ins haha, but it makes me happy to know the population there is doing good and that I just suck 😂
@@Jeffman529 dude you don’t suck! People are too hard on them selves the first couple of years are rough. You just have to build history with spots. Learn the timing, document the sign, keep tabs on a handful of spots like that. You need a rotation of spots. Usually when I get a deer, it’s from a spot I looked at the year or two years before. See the same patterns, then the next year I go in and hunt. Once you get a few spots that are coming to maturity like that each year, your spots get better and better! Stay with it bro! Thanks for the support!
@@theskinnypinehuntingco.6346thank you for the encouragement. One question, do you ever hunt the areas that are just filled with beautyberries? Most my areas are like that, and I wonder if there is perhaps too much food around
@@Jeffman529 yes you should hunt those areas. But try to find some that offer that and more. Like thick vine patches in them or fingers of woods that run out to them or a ditch head. Compounding features you would call it! Look for tracks, or the side with the heaviest browse. It would be a side that gets shade sooner or has shade all day for some reason. They will hang there most.
@@theskinnypinehuntingco.6346 just wanted to report back to you that I got my first ever hog a couple weekends ago 🙂 my first ever national forest animal hehe thanks for all the tips

Sam Houston?
@ yes sir
@theskinnypinehuntingco.6346 I haven't checked if TPWD still does it. But there is a doe draw tag you can apply for last I checked it was free or like 3 dollars to apply. I had went opening day rifle season about 10 years ago. Had a guy shoot a deer 20 yards from where we were set up. Guy had no clue we were there. Heard the shot obviously and saw the lung shot 20 yards away as we headed to the truck around noon. Be safe.
Pleasure meeting you today bud. Rich here. See you out there.
Absolutely man good luck out there! Let me know how it goes!
@@rich_pinard243 also sorry you caught me literally seconds after I came out and I was delirious from getting that deer out lol I wish we would’ve had some more time!

first year bow hunting, got a nice 8 point on NF last week. next week after all this rain should be on their feet 🤞🏼
I know I am late commenting on this but I just found your channel, watched this video, got to the part when you said it was the day before Thanksgiving and got a big grin on my face because I took my buck that morning also in the SHNF! Congratulations on a great buck!
Really? That’s awesome! That was a line day for sure! Cold, crisp, and just enough wind. I made it all the way down the creek hundreds of yards only to fill by boot in the last 2 steps lol
I'll be in SHNF myself this weekend, best of luck to you man!
And you as well! Be safe out there.
Putting those hours into the woods brother! Gonna be some blood on those boots real soon.
