Awkward Encounter Metal Detecting by Science World
I'm back from a brief posting hiatus, due to a series of unfortunate life events I haven't been able to get out metal detecting for the past month. Fortunately I have a couple videos saved up so I can start uploading regularly again while I get back into the swing of things.
This video is from back in Aug; metal detecting after the Pride festival at Creekside Park next to Science World in Vancouver. Found a cool old coin and had a very awkward encounter with an overly curious passerby.

You run it strange characters sometimes while detecting. Best to walk away sometimes. ATB and HH, Sebastian
Yep, a quick exit is usually best. Happy hunting!
Congrats 🏆👏🏆We were your #1000 Sub nice job🎉🎉 Keep swinging 👌👍👏🇺🇸
Thank you and welcome aboard!!
You always have one dumb one asking questions.
That guy was a bit odd. Glad that was all he was :)
And glad it was in the middle of the day and not during a night hunt haha.
The Deutsche Mark was worth all the effort IMO 🙌😀
Such a surprising find for the area but a welcome one!
I actually avoid public places due to such things
Unfortunately it's pretty dense where I live so public places are kind of my only option unless I want to drive pretty far.
Seriously bud, you could be prospecting for gold but instead you're spending your life unearthing garbage & loose change.
Haha, not much raw gold to be prospected in the lower mainland. I'm sure I find more in rings and other jewelry than I'd find panning nearby rivers. I'd have to drive pretty far up the Fraser to get anywhere good.
@@ScoopyJoe Do you always operate on assumptions? You have to go into the bush & outside the lower mainland but there's tons in them rivers still & will be long after we're gone.
@@TheRealHaans I mean, that's pretty much exactly what I just said, I prefer to stick to locations that are nearby where I live for the most part, don't really feel like traveling a long distance very often. But I certainly would like to give it a try one day.
That guy was really odd. And not good odd.
boom let's go let's go treasure and adventure ✌👵
I once was digging coins at a park an a homeless was digging for food out of the rubbish bin an he looked at me like I was gross.
🤣
Dude definitely sounded foreign. Could be a case of dementia possibly as well. But it sounded to me like he was curious what you made metal detecting and on TH-cam. Can't be for sure. You yourself seem very socially awkward as well.
Foreign certainly, but what I meant was it's unlikely he was a newcomer as there are tons of Sikh people here who've been in Canada for a long time, so I doubt he was unfamiliar with things. But you're right, I'm also super awkward so there's that.
Oh no glad you got it out of there
Quite a shock!
Very nice
Exactly why I dig it all 😊 Beautiful find
Yep, some of my best finds have been 'junk' signals.
That is a great find
Culo
Hmmm Yeah , made feel uncomfortable too, Not the normal line of questions sounded like A KGB interrogation . The people you meet while minding your own business Lol !! Yep some cool finds Joe Cheers Mate👍👍👍😎💨🏴☠☮☮💡☺☺☕☕
Haha yeah it got interrogative very quickly, some people have a weird lack of boundaries with strangers it seems. The price we pay for having an interesting outdoor hobby!
💪🏽
🤣 now tell us, what salary do you have and how do you spell your name please! oh! and while we are talking, what is your address and when do you usually go to sleep?
Mother's maiden name and the street you grew up on too if you please. 🤨
Some people ask the strangest questions.
Indeed, thanks for watching!
Was he speaking heavily accented English? A foreigner? He may have been curious and confused. He may have thought that you were either actually working there at the park (working for the park) or thought you were trying to supplement your income for your "regular job" that may not pay well..... Sounds strange but I've had people assume that with me when out on the beach, usually people visiting from outside the country.
The Lower Mainland has a very large and established Sikh community so I doubt this man was recently new to Vancouver. He didn't seem confused as his questions were very direct and I understood them, I just didn't want to share that information with a random stranger. Although definitely not the first time someone initially thought I was doing this as an actual job.
@@ScoopyJoe My favorite response to people on the beach is that I'm with EOD and there has been old military ordnance washing up! Watch where you step! LOL Get some big wide eyes on that one!
I put my Garrett 🥕 on silent , it helps with the randos. I get asked alot too if metal detecting is my job 😂 Also a fellow introvert
I have some foam in the speaker hole and some epoxy over the slots to quiet the beeps somewhat as I still prefer to have the audio feedback, I may work on quieting it further though...
Just stop talking and ignore.
LoL, this hobby also makes you meet crazy people.
The irony that I love the hobby because it's something I can do totally alone and enjoy as introvert, but it also puts a big "TALK TO ME" sign on my back lol. I guess I look approachable...
You handled that well, my mace finger started twitching when he asked what you do.
Haha thank you, at least it wasn't during a night hunt!
Should have the camera mounted so it can see whoever comes up to you when you detect and get a full body shot of him I’ve been detecting since 1978 Spanish banks was my favorite spot back then ❤
I have the aspect ratio set to the tallest available on the GoPro so I can still catch what I'm doing on the ground and have a bit of room to move the focus around; but I can't set it too high or I'll always miss what I'm digging, probably for the best that I'm not regularly catching people's faces on camera anyways. Spanish banks is a great spot, my next video is actually at that beach! It's slim pickings these days but sometimes you can still find great stuff (as you'll see in the next upload 😎) Thanks for watching!
Cartier used to make these cluster rings, each one being a different gold colour. I doubt this is one of them, but worth checking!
Sadly just a very corroded bling ring.
@@ScoopyJoe Yep!
The last gold ring I found was one of those, white, yellow and rose gold, 14k. I didn't see any hallmarks though so probably just a generic ring.
@@marklanders630 They have been heavily copied!
That encounter was weird, but you should share what you make with your coworkers so y'all can figure out which one of you is your bosses favourite and which one of you is getting ripped off lol Today I I went out looking for a specific piece that was missing from a matchsafe I found months ago, I spent an hour not really finding much, digging a bunch of iron, then I gave up and started heading back towards my backpack, I even said I'll dig one more target and go home, and my last target was the piece I was looking for, I didn't actually expect to find it, I didn't even know if it was actually out there
Haha, to my coworkers for sure, but to some rando in a park I think I'll pass 😅. Also I just got laid off last week after over a decade... On the bright side now I have lots of time for metal detecting lol. That's awesome! I've found some of my best stuff right at the end of my hunt as well.
Your were way more polite then I would have been....😂
Howdy Neghbour, I am in Burnaby too! Would love to get into metal detecting but I dont know where to start? Any advice? it would have to be cheap as I cant afford anything tooo expensive! Looks like you had fun! Nice finds! I have heard about the new GoPro's the audio is kinda muffled as you were saying! Take care!
Howdy! You can get into metal detecting for a pretty small initial investment these days. Canadian Tire actually has the Minelab Vanquish 340 and 440 on sale right now for just about as cheap as you'll ever find a decent multifrequency detector. I haven't used the Vanquish personally but I've heard good things and it's based on the same technology as the rest of Minelab's MF detectors so it should be a perfect one to start out with. I would normally recommend not cheaping out on a pinpointer, the Garrett Pro Pointer AT is my gold standard; however I have seen people discuss the Pro Pointer knock-offs on Amazon and they seem do a pretty OK job for their price point. Just search for pinpointer on amazon and look for the orange ones that all kind of look the same and have lots of reviews. (I am not affiliated with any vendors, this is just my personal opinion). Happy hunting!
Are you in FVTH? look for my post (have something to share with you)
I do hope you put the tag back where you found it
I haven't been back out to that site yet, it's on my to-do list!
I had the RCMP called on me for detecting in a playground late in the evening. They got a call for someone with a red light, digging holes 😂. They were just about as confused as the caller but left me alone. Not too many people metal detecting in that town.
Thankfully I haven't had the cops called on me, yet!
That lady said on the phone "its odd" and proceeded to condescend him about not understanding why he is doing it and that there are no treasures....why does anyome fing care! I received the same type of answer months back when I asked a neighbor if I could detect on his property because he was removing all the trees and about to rip up the land. He said No with some bogus excuse, those same people that put you down because they dont understand why you do it dont realize that fortune does catch up with those who are dedicated. 2 months after that refusal I found a nearby forgotten park and found a 14k gold chain weighing over 12 grams, 3 Silver Rings, Silver Mercs, Barber Dimes, Silver Rosie's and various jewelry. To this day its still my favorite Park!
Wow those are some amazing finds! Our parks are so full of trash here that finding gold is almost impossible unless you want to dig a million pull tabs and bits of aluminum foil...
“I’m ignorant, and I don’t understand what you’re doing, so, you can’t do that”
Definitely one of the funnier reasons someone's tried to provide against metal detecting in their area.
that dog needs to chill a little maybe. Lots of foreign money in that park eh"?interesting hunt.
Better than pennies haha!
@@ScoopyJoe True, it does seem that`s all that`s left anyway many pennies to dig, ahh, what a pain "!LOL Best of luck to you buddy "!
Thanks!
awkward, but interesting.
Went back this year an nobody bothered me this time, I guess they've learned.
Dude chilling park…..that’s my kind of place ……thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Hiya Joe! Such a bizarre find that tooth pendant! Not super unusual for us to find teeth crowns and the like on the beach (as morbid as it sounds... cremation remains) but a tooth in the park?!?! 😲 Curious... why aren't you using your smaller coil on the trashy parks? Seems to be ideal for better target separation, especially when you aren't going for deep targets.... love my M8 or M9 for exactly that scenario. 🙂
Hong Kong coin, Singapore coin, Asian dude chilling park
Never found a metal crown or filling, have found one cremation tag that I mistook for a dog tag until I got home! I had so much ground I wanted to cover on that park I decided to stick with the 11 inch coil, I find that in most areas it's still quite easy to separate targets with the standard coil. I use the small one when I'm in really uneven ground with lots of sharp rocks, like the seawall or gravely shorelines around here.
Interesting finds so close together.
"Your soil seems nice to dig in, Idig that Harley Davidson buckle, nice. Anything motorcycle related can be worth $$$ Also, beautiful silver ring, could have easily been gold"! Best of luck"!😎🍀
Sometimes the ground is not too bad; in the summer it dries quite hard and in the fall it's usually very muddy, there's a small seasonal window where it's ok haha. Shame the belt buckle was so corroded, it had been there for a bit but the silver ring made it all worthwhile. Thanks for watching!
@@ScoopyJoe Yes, the Northern window is small, we gotta get out every chance we get"! Best"!
New Sub here, Great to find more Canadian content, looking forward to checking out your channel"! best"!
Welcome aboard eh!
Did you check to make sure the dragon Cannon doesn't have a weapon inside it
Haha yes it was the first thing I did when I found it. Thought it might have a sword hidden in it but it appears to be solid.
Do you test silver with the silver acid ir the 18k acid?? I did a test with the 18k acid, and 925 turns a more colourful blue than 9999 fine silver
I used the 18k acid. Blueish white results.
When a toonie or loonie has a non colourised version and a colourized version, usually the non colourized cersion are rarer, they are usually, but not always 3 million colours 1 million non colours
Seems to be a lot more of them circulating lately!
Nice ring, i missed this video when it dropped, i could tell you were a milennial, im one too born 89, thw silver chain was cool too, i havnt found anything good in a month or so
Haha nice to know there's some other young(er) people doing the hobby 😅. I just got back out today after not being able to do any hunting for the last month, I've had enough footage built up to keep posting fairly regularly at least.
good day! happy metal detecting
Thank you!
Nice hunt congrats on the silver ring 👍
Thanks!
Nice ring, i detected for an hour and fifteen minutes this morning all i walked away with was $0.47, 2 zipper pulls, these plastic jewels i surface found, and a pile of canslaw and foil
Haha thanks, thought I might have the same after a while on this hunt but the ring was a nice surprise!
That is a moonstone if I'm not mistaken! Nice!
I thought it might be Opalite (synthetic) due to the clarity and lack of true iridescence. Thanks!
Completely show how the WRONG type of people have some type of so called authority.
