Indigenous Peoples’ Use of California Native Plants
www.cnps.org/event/indigenous-peoples-use-of-california-native-plants
Join us to learn how the original people of California used native plants in their everyday lives!
SPANISH DESCRIPTION OF TALK
Presented in English, with live captions and presentation materials translated into Spanish.
The Indigenous people of California lived here for thousands of years, during which time they made the most of what California’s various habitats offered them. In the Great Central Valley, they lived in small villages and moved according to the cycles of the seasons and years. They gathered, hunted, and fished the plants and animals of their world, using them in myriad ways. Learn about some of the native plants utilized by the Valley indigenous people, and how they used them in a sustainable manner, which included plant management and using controlled burns.
Denise has been a Stanislaus County UC Master Gardener since 2020. Her career was spent in science education which included working as a lab technician doing research in microbiology and plant physiology at Shell Lab and as the anatomy-physiology lab technician at Modesto Junior College. She was also a biology labs adjunct instructor at Merced College, an editor for a college science books/lab manuals publishing company, and the outreach education coordinator at the Great Valley Museum (GVM). Since retiring she has been a docent for GVM, doing tours for schools and the public, training new docents, and curating two exhibits. She is on the committee for MJC’s Science Colloquium, a STEM speakers’ series. As a Master Gardener, she gives talks, helps at events and workshops, and writes for their blog, the Stanislaus Sprout.
During her years at GVM, she became interested in how the original people of California lived. She has continued to learn during retirement, including expanding her knowledge of their use of native plants as a Master Gardener and a museum docent.

www.cnps.org/event/uso-de-plantas-nativas-de-california-por-los-pueblos-indigenas

Try the CNPS gardening section and the various garden tours such as Growing Native Garden Tour gngt.org and Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour. There is also a groups.io group dedicated to gardening where you could ask this question: Gardening with Natives. And watch our other video titled "Reliable Plants for a Garden with No Irrigation".

Great presentation. Really love the stuff you folks post here and I'm looking forward to joining the chapter and going to one of these field trips you're talking about setting up! Also thankful for Jeanne dropping the info about Great Valley Seeds right at the end there. Seems like a great resource here in Merced County.
