Blender Grease Pencil 3.0 Add-On | Whippet GP 3.0 Demo
This video shows new features for my Blender Add-on called Whippet GP. This 3.0 version is compatible with Blender 4.3 and up! Whippet GP is designed to help you access GP tools faster and also provides some macros that you can map to you keyboard shortcuts to add new drawings faster without scrubbing the timeline!
Currently, Whippet GP 3.0 is not built as an extension so you will have to install the add-on from the disk method in Blender 4.3. I will eventually make it an extension so it's easier to update future versions of the add-on.
You can download Whippet GP 3.0 via my Gumroad here: mauritsvalk.gumroad.com/l/fkbtmh
Big thanks to @SpitfireStoryboards, @MathiasZamecki and @VisionforBlender for their feature requests and guiding me to update to GP 3.0!

Soo good. The image textures aren't sticking with the brush, not sure why.
Thank you, John! I'm planning out my year and want to explore brushes again. I'm leaning to making brushes work with Blender 4.3 as well as some good Texture Painting Brushes to quickly get style into your scenes. Keep you posted!
Thanks for all the work! really smooths out the workflow!
Glad you find it helpful!
Nice one on the updates and video Maurits. Great quality of life upgrade and succesfully over the gp3 migration hump.
Thank you, Paul!
this is really great. How long have you been storyboarding for?
Thank you! 5 years professionally now
can you please make auto-mat for grease pencil please xD
You can currently use the fill tool in Blender and set it to 'Negative' fill and click outside your character drawing and it will auto matte the character for you. This is really handy and also works with multiple keyframes using the multi-frame setting. The only thing to remember is that it auto mattes in the orientation of the camera, so if your camera is moving then you need to go through each keyframe manually to make sure the matte is oriented correctly to the camera. There is a feature request to matte multiple keyframes automatically by having the timeline update to each instance of a keyframe to correctly apply multiple mattes. Hope this helps!
@@maurits_valk amagaaa, this is awesome!! thaanks so mucho!! took some time to find the little "-" sign next to the "+" sign next to precision.
@@kobiianardo glad it worked! Yeah, it's not totally clear in Blender that the fill tool can work like that but we do have it!

Not working in Blender 4.3
Hi, yes. I've updated the verbiage on Gumroad that states the add-on does not work in Blender 4.3. I need to update the add-on since Grease Pencil has been rewritten. Cheers

fantasic job! i want to make something like this too!
Great stuff Maurits. Thanks for sharing. Quick question : What addon did you use for the camera shake? It feels really natural ;)
hahaha thank you, Paul!
Hey Maurits awesome pack! I'm having trouble getting the brushes to look exactly like they do in the video. currently the textured brushes are just dots
Hey! It's hard to troubleshoot without visuals but perhaps you are too close to the greasepencil object either in the view port or when looking through a camera. You want to make sure the GP object and the place you are drawing in relation to the origin is far enough away from view (try 3-5 meters). The other thing to check is the Stroke Thickness under grease pencil properties, depending if you have world space or screen space will effect how the strokes are rendered in terms of size. This all pertains to Blender 4.2 and under. These brushes do not work in 4.3 with the new Grease Pencil 3
3:36 Medal of honor, i still remmeber it!
Epic!
Thanks bro
38:04 Please do, I’ve learned a lot of valuable things while watching your videos as someone who just started storyboarding (it’s quiet confusing) but you’ve put in a way even a beginner like me could understand. It would be awesome to get some tips from you, Keep up the good work 👍🏽
Amazing Stuff, Brother. Well Done!

Hi Maurits. I'd love to see a video from you with exercises to begin with storyboarding :). Btw do you think it is possible to pursue a career as a storyboarder at 32 having already a solid drawing knowledge?
That’s a great video idea will keep that in mind! I got my job at lucasfilm at 31, granted I had be doing storyboard work for a few years prior to this role but I don’t think age Number of opportunities is really what matters. And your location and skill level might affect that. This is not to say it’s not worth learning storyboarding bc if you ever want to make your own film then learning to tell a story through boards is really helpful. If our industry heads towards independent creators using AI tools (not generative stuff - this is another topic) then having a strong storytelling skill set will be critical to that future career.
@@maurits_valk thanks Maurits!
great keep sharing the knowledge
Thanks, Raj! And thanks for dropping by the stream

@@maurits_valkexcellent thanks for getting back to me. I work as a storyboard artist and comic artist for marvel and dc and love seeing your work. Trying to get into blender grease pencil boards at the moment in between projects. Thanks once again best neil
@@TheHulk1934 that’s awesome Neil! Very cool to hear you are also learning blender. I hope to do more tutorials on boarding in Blender as well. I think it’s growing in an interest and GP3 should be great for future productions.
Super helpful info! Thanks for sharing, I've taken a lot of notes.
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Nice storyboard
Keep on going !!!
How do you avoid gaps between textured strokes? I keep having a gap between my lines from my imported texture
Hey there! It's hard to help guide you to a solution without seeing what's happening exactly but make sure you do not have a simplify value active in your brush settings. You might have to increase the image size of your texture. IF you're too close to the stroke then you also be able to see the gaps so you want to be far enough away from the stroke so that the individual dots appear to be close together. the last option is to try a material of stroke type 'line' this way it's one line with an image texturing that line versus dots. Hope this helps!
Hi Everyone! I noticed my mic audio was pretty low so I apologize about that. I will up the gain and make sure it's better next time 🙏
Amazing animation man. MUCH MUCH UNDERRATED 😍😍
Thank you!
hi Maurice! I am not watch the video yet but I will as soon as I have the time to do it, however I'd like to say that your work is awesome, I found it out on reddit but also on Andy Cungs classes or Sergio Paez I don't remember it, and if you don't mind I have a question. How important do you think it is learn how to animated or being an animator to be an storyboarder? because I take some classes of animation as a recommendation from a professional to be an storyboarder and I hate to it, it was a horrible experience and I am lost , because I wanted to jump to the storyboarder area
Hi @emirh, thank you for kind words and checking out my work! In regards to animating, having a good foundation on the principles of animation and being able to draw characters with good gestures and performances that convey their characters is definitely an important factor in being a successful storyboard artist. If you want to work in Animation series and movies then being able to draw more keyframes to give the illusion a character is animated/moving will go a long way. It's more time consuming but it will set you apart from other artists if you do it well. In Live Action projects, you do not need to animate your boards because the actors can interpret a single pose in a storyboard for what they need to do. I personally have never taken an animation class, but I recommend starting off with very simple gesture drawings of characters moving. Use big shapes or stick figures to convey before cleaning up any drawings. If you have trouble drawing for your head, then record yourself doing something and take the key poses from that performance. Hope this helps!
@@maurits_valk hi Maurits thanks for taking the time to give me your answer I really appreciate it and I'll take it into consideration, I wish you a great day and I am looking forward to see you here more often :D
Awesome presentation , thank you for this so valuable sharing. Which edition Storyliner you’re using? Thank you!
I'm happy you liked the video and found it valuable! I've been using a test version of Storyliner which had all the features but I would recommend the Storyboard version unless you want to strictly use it for 3D previs.
jeez Louise, I desperatly wish i had a minute to really check this out. Right now I'm doing a gameplay anim test for Rockstar, and looking for something to listen in the bg, but for this I want some solid focus
What’s up Maurits! Very insightful video man, I had a question about your first point. When you mention making a animatic, do you mean one edited animatic of one of your story sequences with music/sfx like you shared in your last video, or more like a minute or two long demo reel showing shots of some of your sequences? Looking forward to the next vid man!
Hey Armin! Glad you liked the video and thank you for watching! I mean the former. So make a full storyboard sequence that is edited, drawings are timed out, some voice acting (you won't be deducted points for this, just do your best), and add some basic sfx and music. It really helps go a long way and shows you are willing to learn all aspects of the process!
@@maurits_valkawesome that’s good to know, I just made one very recently! thanks for the response!!
EXTREMELY helpful. I like how you keep it simple, to the point, and chill. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Thank you! I'm stoked you found it helpful. I plan to make more videos similar to this and cover my whole art journey. Cheers!
Saving lives!!!❤
really cool brushes. Thank you! But my brush window (selecting as you do) only shows 24 brushes (3 rows of 8). I see in your demo you can display all the brush icons ( 6 rows!). There is something to unlock the size of the window but cannot find it! (Although I can scrub with a mouse scroll wheel to see them which is a bit silly) Love your boards! Very inspiring
Hi Jamie! I think that is because in my Whippet GP add-on I changed the brush menu row/column count so I apologize if that wasn't clear. The standard brush menu is set to 3x8 however you can actually change that. If you open a text window for python scripting, right click on the brush menu and go to 'edit source' you can find the values for the rows and columns that are linked to the draw menu size. Enter in different values and then press the 'run/play' button at the top of the text window to get an updated menu.
Thanks @@maurits_valk, got it... thats pretty old-skool vs a simple click and expand.
I noticed as well that my drawing still sucks with these brushes. Am I not clicking on something since yours seem much better 😀 Keep up the great work!
@@jamiebeard yeah unfortunately Blender doesnt have the expand feature which is why I changed it in my addon
Hi@@jamiebeard, are you in Textured or Rendered view? The brushes appear best when you are in one of those two view. Feel free to send a screenshot via instagram if you're still having trouble!
Hopefully I can also get a gig there too someday, thx for the vid!

@@senior_sakuga I'll make another video on my entire 'art' journey. it's a bit of lengthy one
@@maurits_valk looking forward to it! ❤️
Hey great video! I have questions! :D First off, I’d love to know what was your process for ideating the story, I usually go into it without a method and I think it shows lol, secondly how many pieces/animatics did you have in your portfolio already before you got hired? Was it you first job as a story artist? Thank you in advance :)
Thank you, Francesco! Regarding your questions, for coming up with stories that's just a matter of day dreaming. To come up with how to actually tell the story with shot designs and tone, that would require a lengthy explanation but for starters it's worth studying scenes from movies that reflect your scene's story and tone. I think everything that is on my website on the personal page was included in the portfolio: www.mauritsvalk.com/personal I want to make a separate video that explains the entire journey of getting this job because there's a lot to it but I applied a year earlier and they saw how much I progressed over a year which helped a lot. This was not my first job. I was working in advertising as a Storyboard Artist for a few years and did a little animation work too.
What an amazing video, great work! And very motivating thank you ✨
Thank you so much! I’m glad you found value in it!

This was a really useful way to present how you created this board. I dont think it was too long, I think you could have made it even more expansive and I would watch it.
