Was This Massive Cottonwood Log More Than I Could Handle?
Today we rescue a massive cottonwood tree. I may have got in over my head with this tree. It is almost 4 feet in diameter. I can not wait to get it on the mill and see what kind of slabs we can get from this monster.

Good job with the video. I have a 204 and a 202.
Thanks! This definitely helped my problem, but I got the problem 100% fixed in the video about fixing the backfire.
Dude ive been watching your videos on this build, great work. Ive got no clue why you dont have more likes than you do but regardless great job
Hey thanks! Hopefully I’ll get more free time to run the mill this coming spring. I’ve learned a lot about video and editing since I made these and I’m still not that good lol I 100% appreciate your comment!! Thank you!
@WideCutSawmill well I thought you did an excellent job, keep up the good work
Will do. Thanks again. It is encouraging.
Not walnut
Oh really? What’s your profession opinion then?
Hard to say without seeing the top but looks more like a shag bark hickory in the video than any walnut ive seen. Didnt see any dark saw dust or dark heart either. Hard to tell in the video though.@WideCutSawmill
Here is the full video for you. Unexpected Problem | Urban Logging Big Black Walnut and Maple th-cam.com/video/29wQRhLEHeE/w-d-xo.html
@WideCutSawmill yep it is indeed a walnut. I stand corrected. I would highly recommend some cutting classes though. I've been in the woods for 15 years cutting timber. When i first started at 18 my stumps looked like yours but they have classes you can attend that are very informative. Also those classes put your name out there through the conservation and you will get calls for your services just based on that alone. Your notch is to deep and your hinge is basically non existent. Your hinge should be a straight line and even. Also if you're doing it for a profit on walnut you need to learn to spur cut. You lost atleast 8 inches of wood on this log. Otherwise great job and you went home to the family that's the biggest thing. Oh and a bigger chainsaw will make your life alot easier.
That is all great advice. Until recently I have only dropped trees for firewood. I’ve dropped quite a few years worth but none this big. That Stihl 046 is pretty sentimental to me. It’s the first saw my dad got brand new and the saw I learned to cut with. I now have a husqvarna 372xp with a 28in bar. Once I start making some money with the mill I’ll put some toward a felling class. I agree with you it’s a worthy investment.
You may want to buy you a service manual
I thought about it but so far haven’t. I found the biggest issue was that I had two stuck valves. Fixed that issue as well and it moves like a champ. At this point the only thing I’m unsure of is adjusting the clutch assembly. When pushing the gas pedal in either direction it gives a big jolt when it starts moving no matter how slow you ease into the peddle.
China junk rebuilt 3 times no luck US kit FIXED 10 years
Mines still running. 🤷🏼♂️not saying the Chinese kit is gold, but for $40-50…It’s there for those that need it.
Can you do a longer slower builder Look
Like go over how I built it in more detail?
Wow nice work! and nice truck!
Thanks! It is a solid truck for sure! Thank you 😁
Great job 👍
Thank you 👍🏼
Thus guy is amazing 👏. I followed his video to a T, and found one of the tappet just hanging loose, retighten as per video. Problem solved 😊 Thank you so much !!! Saved me thousands of $$$'s !!!😅
Happy to be able to help!
Nicely done figuring it out.
Thank you! 👍🏼
@@WideCutSawmill 🤣🤣no just got it to run and move bought it at and auction. I have been using a kubota skid steer biggest one they make I have to Barrow it so that's not going to last long. Most of the logs I am sawing so far are about 28 inches and 12 feet long oak and cottonwood I am supposed to get some white pine soon. It's been fun so far but I truly missed judge the weight of those logs. And what's stupid is I have burned wood my whole life.
Oh yeah big logs are heavy especially when they are green. (Future video spoiler alert!) I just brought home some 4 foot diameter cottonwood logs. Very very heavy lol Does your forklift have more than one of the stackable counter weights on it?
@@WideCutSawmill no it's got a hand made tub full of dirt concrete engine parts. I know it's hard but don't give up on that old tractor to quick. You are going to pay a hundred grand on something that will do what the 204 will do but you can't work on it with out a computer or you will have to pay 4 grand when your regent system takes a crap
Hit the subscribe button and you’ll see I’m not giving up on it quickly lol Yes I am really loving the simplicity of this unit.
I just bought one continental engine not as good looking as your machine for my sawmill good luck
Thank you. I’m currently rebuilding the main lift cylinder. I feel like it’s one thing after another lol but by the time I get all the issues ironed out it should be a solid machine.
Let me know if ya want to sell it🙂
Honestly it might happen in the not too distant future. If it can’t pickup and move some of these really big logs I just brought home I’ll have to upgrade to something bigger.
@@WideCutSawmill ya I bought a woodland sawmill and I am not going to lie to you I retired and the logs I am getting are huge. It has been very interesting so far. I was a mechanic in a food factory 🤷♂️
So are you able to lift them with your MF204 forklift? How big of diameter logs are you sawing?
My forklift had the same issue with the leaking seals on the control valve. I do not know the correct name for the seals but i was told they were called plunger seals or soemthing similiar to that. Mine was only leaking out of one but the orignal seals that were in it were leather packed seals. They were known to go bad over time. I had a hard time looking for replacement seals beacuse they are a odd ball size. I had a hydraulic shop specialy make new ones for me and they worked ever since. Getting the old one out were tricky and i cant quite describe how we did it but we drilled some screws into the seal and was able to slowly pry it out. adn drive the new ones in. My model is a 202 and is a geardrive variant not hydrostatic. Other then haveing power steering issues after we got that control valve fixed its been a good unite. Jsut know that the steering on these were not designed that good and its possible that the orbital valve is leaking under the dashbaord which is a 12$ six just one simple o-ring but the steering cylinders were known to break off or leak so bad that they dont work properly at all.
Awesome! Thank you for that info! If they are leather maybe I can cut out new ones myself. 👍🏼
It sounds more like a Longbell 3 Chime
Install new shift lever boots to help keep water from getting into the transmission.
Very good. Will do in the future. I have it parked in a barn now so it’ll be fine for the moment but that definitely something I need to do! Thanks!
WD 40 has limited lubricating properties. You should something like spray lithium or oil.
Yes. They are pretty stiff and I’m hoping the wd40 helps loosen them up a bit. I’ll definitely get some oil on them soon. Good call. Thank you!
Interesting enough I have a supercharger by McCollough that is supposed to take Type A ATF. Type A is from the 50s and is mainly whale oil. That's why you can't get it anymore.
That’s fascinating! Pretty crazy. I guess all my stress over what to put in it was a bit over blown looking back lol
Would that be the same McCollough that makes chainsaws?
Yes. He sold his supercharger business and started the chainsaw business. After a few years some racers asked him to make superchargers again. Since he had sold his name he used his middle name. Thus was born the Paxton superchargers.
Well how about that. Very interesting.
The oil level dipstick is located in the side cover of the rear axel housing, this is the oil level indicator for the rear axel and transmission level.
Yes Thank you. I plan to do the differential/rear axel next. 👍🏼
Looks like it works good,
It does. I’m happy with it. 👍🏼
Way to slow
Definitely not fast, but you’d need 50-100 hp to fly through a 34” wide log at the same speed you’d cut through a 20” log on a hobby mill.
The nurse in me was like no please don't walk in front of the saw blade lol. But I would love one of those saw mills
lol yeah I have blade guards for it now. 👍🏼
where at?
This is Hartwick Pines State Park.
Funny how many people are welding experts in this comment section 😂 Anyways this whole job is impressive and feels like a docu-series. Pretty cool
Still holding strong 💪🏼lol Thanks!
Very satisfying to watch! Have you cut anything bigger since you cut this?
Not yet, but I will be very soon.
She sounds healthy!
Running like a champ!
Huh, does it to a forklift too.
Yep. Sure does lol
Not steel, cast iron! The chinese one looks like aluminum. The older one looks like a Marvel-Scwabler. Good carb, worth rebuilding. Now, your gas, if you have a carburetor system, try to stay away from Ethenol fuel. It'll run fine, and it's cheaper but if you leave it set any amount of time the gasoline will evaporate faster than the Ethanol which will eventually lose its moisture also leaving behind a sticky mess. This is the biggest problem and failure of most modern carburetors.
Yep it’s a Marvel Schebler carb. Honestly it’s probably fine after the cleaning I did to it. (See the linked video) I thought it needed rebuilding but turned out just to be a ton of rust in the fuel tank. Cleaned the tank and it runs great. The old carb is saved and might go back on one day.
Glad you fixed it, doesn't matter how😎
Thanks! Thats my feeling as well. 👍🏼 It’s a work machine for me, not a show piece. It just needs to run let and get the work done.
Good job sawrus
Thanks! 👍🏼

And the purpose of this lame video was what?
Exposure and learning what works for my channel. I’m posting a short every day for a month to grow my channel. Not every video is a winner. But I have posted videos that I think are boring and they do really well 🤷🏼♂️ So I’m experimenting and posting a range of things to grow the channel as well as learn what people enjoy watching.
Looks like an owl to me
I think so too. I hear them back there at night often.
He has no idea what he’s doing. You want a hard blubbering 4stroke, running quite rich for the first tank or two. Then you can start leaning it out to around 13,500 rpm (high idle)
Yep I did that. Cut a couple loads of wood with it choked out. Suppose I should have showed that. But yes this is my first rebuild.
Sounds like the idle is too high, or it’s got a pretty bad air leak…
Those cheap kits are great to start with but in my experience I’ve seen a lot of variations in timing numbers in them and a lot have had major failures in the plating and will wipe out the bearing and seals if not caught fast enough, just stuff to be careful of
For sure. Good things to keep an eye out for. 👍🏼 I got this saw cheap on fb marketplace. The guy had put a non xtorq piston in it and it barely ran. Shocking that it would start really. I just wanted to get it running. The cheap kit is definitely cheap. But it did get me a running 372 in my budget. It’ll get me buy til I can buy a new one or high quality parts.
@@WideCutSawmill exactly, my good friend has been running a cheap cylinder on his saw for a while and they definitely wear out faster but to get a saw running or I use them for testing porting theory they are amazing
I did notice the port sizes on this one were not the same size and shape as the stock cylinder. They were a bit smaller which I would assume equals lower power.
@@WideCutSawmill it depends, you can get more power out of smaller ports if the timing is correct due to the smaller ports having increased velocity, being a cheap cylinder I’d bet the port timing is off though
Fresh chains are nice, but to me the best is a chain that’s been either square ground or even round filled a couple of times to get it perfect
For sure. A nice dialed in chain is the best. Getting the rackers filed right etc. These are full chisel. I’ve always bought semi chisel before. These do seem to cut faster.
@@WideCutSawmill full chisel is faster but will dull much easier, I only run full chisel but I also file my saws constantly and stay out of the dirt and rocks when I can
I seriously take for granted how fast square ground chains cut. The saw needs a tune definitely sounds on the lean side. 2500-3000rpm for idle
Yeah. I didn’t have my screwdriver out with me. It was definitely leaner than I liked. I have tuned it a bit more since. 👍🏼
Y el face shield ..es para cubrir solo la cabeza???
It’s used when needed.
Looks like the saw did pretty well.
It did. I tweaked the carb a little more and it’s been running great.
Maybe another 100hp or so.!
At least! Lol
Now you should paint flames on it. Pretty sure that improves performance too.
For sure! That should add at least half a horse. 😁
Crank on it until it breaks then back it off 1/4 turn.
Yep til righty tighty becomes righty loosey lol
