Birds at Rocky Pool, Huai Khayeng Nature Park, Thailand - June 2024
A series of camera trap clips of birds at Rocky Pool, Huai Khayeng Nature Park in June 2024
I've now built a 4-seater bird hide at Rocky Pool, which I hope to open for visitors around December to January, and I am making this series so that potential visitors can get an idea of what they might see in any given month. Our rainy season is from July to September inc., then dies away through October, so that is not a suitable time to visit the hides.

At the moment a large fig tree is in fruit at Huai Khayeng Nature Park and it is attracting a lot of interesting birds, so I set up my camera to try to get some film. Today I was over the moon to see Baya Weavers constructing nests here at Huai Khayeng Nature Park. We once had them nesting here about 7 years ago, but the nests only lasted a few days, and I always assumed that they were taken by someone, or the birds themselves dismantled them to recycle the materials. Anyway, I have been looking out for them ever since, especially as we are really a bit outs...
Stump-tailed Macaques feast on Fruit, Beans and Soil in Kaeng Krachan NP, Thailand

Today I filmed a large troop of stump-tailed macaques again - probably the same troop that I've filmed in this area on previous occasions. They were feeding by the roadside on a variety of food plants including an invasive legume species whose beans are toxic. It appears that overconsumption of these beans has caused hair loss in a number of individuals in this troop. Stump-tailed macaques are ...

Excellent video again Daz. It would be great to get some more of those Pitta species. Very nice.
Thanks Neil..... Yes, indeed. I'm really looking forward to the coming year when I'll be able to spend more time at the Nature Park surveying the wildlife we have there. I'll be in the UK next week and hoping to get a couple more trail cameras to bring back to Thailand.
very cool birds for the garden.. The call is Pin-striped Tit-Babbler
Oh... that's good to know. They are regulars there, of course.
Mmmm... 32 hectares... maybe 'garden' is not quite the right word, but I like it.
Oh, the young monkeys are so cute. It's a pity that their appearance changes so much, when they get old. These black and red spotted faces are unfortunately not very pretty to look at.
These guys r cute. Even the big guys
Hello Angela, sorry if this is a repeat, but I seem to be having a problem replying to comments on the channel at the moment. Yes, indeed. They really are very lovely, aren't they. I had a great time filming this troop. The light was just right in the morning, and they looks so good in the bamboo.
Hello Darryl.really nice to see the hunt of this tiny and quite rigid snake.Very well filmed and indeed rare to see this..... Greetings Gijs🤠🤠
Thank you so much, Gijs. If my memory serves me right, I am assuming October will be too late, or nearly too late to go looking for snakes in the Netherlands..... right?
@@thailandwild4897 Yes you are right Darryl, We have only 3 species of snakes here and in october the hibernation is starting. You have to go to the Zoo...haha...🤠🤠
Great stuff!
Thank you for your comment, much appreciated.
Interesting to watch, good lighting, 👍
Thank you, Nicola. I am working hard to keep the canopy open enough for good light but not too open so that it is harsh. From about November onwards I'll be sitting in my hide at Rocky Pool to get some proper 8K video of these birds..... I'm just waiting for our rainy season to finish first.
Super video , looks great 👍
Thank you 👍

Hello Anthony... I seem to be having some problems replying to comments on my channel, but needless to say I quite agree.... these macaques are wonderful. I have been fortunate enough to film them on several occasions, but this first clip was my favourite because I also had my daughter with me and she was taking photos for a school project, which made it even more special.
Brilliant May session Darryl. Bitterns were great. Getting more tempting:) Thankyou
Thanks, Neil. Yes indeed, there have been some exciting species this year. It will be interesting to see what happens after the rainy season finishes and I start to put a lot more food around the area.
Getting a real diversity of species there... nice one.
Thanks Brian... yes, it was doing great until August - September, but then as expected it went quiet as the rains came down hard.... I can't wait to see how it will go after November when the rain stops and I start putting food out.
I've watched all your 'rocky pool' video series. I'd love to visit in the future! It's a great set up you've created.
Thank you, Sam. I'm afraid I have just launched the clip for May... so you have a bit more viewing to do. You would be very welcome. I am anticipating the best time for us to be December - June.... and the best of that will be Feb - Apr when the forest is dry and hot. I'll post some photos of the hide at Rocky Pool on my Facebook page or I could send some by email if preferred.
@@thailandwild4897 Thanks. I have followed you on FB and can see the hide. Looks good!
In November i go there for one week. So i am happy.
Do you mean you will visit Kaeng Krachan NP in November? I'm not totally sure, but I think that would be too early after the rainy season has finished for the bird hides. We normally get the last rain around the first or second week of November, then the forest will start to dry out so the birds start to come to the pools. But maybe, if they have food available at Bird Hide some birds will come at all times. I'm not sure.
Great Video!
Thank you very much.
Amazing work Darryl! Can't wait to be back in Thailand to bird!
Thank you so much for your encouraging comment, Jeff. Keep an eye on the channel, I hope to open the bird hides here after the new year. I'm just doing some work in the next few days to prepare Rocky Pool and Turtle Pool, plus I will be making some reflection pools and a large hide overlooking a wetland area.
Fantastic video! And to think, the birds are just discovering this place - it will get even better with time!
Yes indeed, Coke. It really is starting to look like the place has some great potential. I'm just about to head over over there for a few days to sort out planting more food plants, and to do a bit of filming.
Really superb and well-paced video giving an insight into the avian diversity of Thailand
Thank you so much for your kind comment, Glenn. As you may have seen, I also have clips for February, for March, and for the first half or so of April on the channel. The idea being for bird watchers to really see what I get at the pool in any given month. Having said that, it is all new for me as I only made the original pool last year, and the hide this year. I am hoping that as the wildlife gets used to it, and as I start to put out fruit and nuts etc., that I will start to get a lot more species coming in.
@@thailandwild4897 I wish you every success - your narration is also excellent demonstrating your enthusiasm for this wonderful birding paradise. I especially love the tree pies as Corvids are my favourite birds
Thank you so much... yes... 16 years ago it was nothing but ash and rock after the previous owner's attempt to establish a rubber plantation was hit by forest fires several times. My enthusiasm comes from seeing what can happen in just 16 years when nature is given a helping hand.
@@thailandwild4897 I think you're a wildlife hero

@@thailandwild4897 Was in Thailand birding 2012 on an organized tour. Planning to come back in a couple of years by my self. Where is our hide? Moving to Costa Rica in a bit so planning to do exactly what you have done with your watering hole.
Hi Kristian.... my pools are on a 35 hectare piece of land next to Thong Pha Phum National Park in Kanchanaburi province in the West of Thailand. I currently have two small pool - Rocky Pool and Turtle Pool with a 4-seater hide at Rocky Pool. We will make another 4-seater hide at Turtle Pool later this year. I also plan a large pond with a big hide for viewing water birds and mammals, as well as a wetland/boggy area in the woodland with another 4-seater hide. And we will also work on reflection pools with hides in the near future, too. All of this dependent on being able to sell some footage!!! Good luck with setting things up in Costa Rica. I will start putting out our BTS clips soon on how we made the pools and the hides, so you might get some ideas from those to help you.
@@thailandwild4897 Thanks for the info, will save this thread. I think your Radde's is a Dusky. Too dark and warm under neath and the white eye-stripe is too white in front of the eye. Search for "Focus On: separating Radde's and Dusky Warblers" and you see a good article about them. Do you agree?
Thanks Kristian, I actually favoured Dusky, but I am not an expert bird-watcher by any means - I am more a reptile and mammal guy. I consulted a number of people here and the consensus seemed to be Radde's, so I went with that. Without experience of seeing these birds in the wild I can't separate those colour tones, but the beak looked a little longer and more slender than the pictures I have of Radde's. I will amend the description to suggest Dusky as a possibility, and let the experts decide for themselves.

Hi Darryl Another excellent video. Some great species and getting busy. Light looks better then the KK hides which I found very challenging. Loved the Shrika. How far in metres is the hide from the pool for photography please? Many thanks. Neil
Hi Neil. Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Yes, I am really pleased how well the pool is doing, especially considering that I haven't started to put out fruit and nuts yet. I have just been putting some mixed grain around the area in the hope of attracting partridge or quail, but only junglefowl and spotted pigeon seem to come for it. From the hide it is 6m to the front edge of the lower pool (furthest edge in the clips above) and 8m to the far edge of the upper pool. There are several natural perches from about 5m from the hide to about 10m from the hide above and to the sides of the pools.
You really have some great birds there.... getting jealous.. lol
Yes. It's getting better and better. It really should liven up in the winter when I start putting down fruit and nuts. If it is an consolation I am only getting Red Junglefowl at the moment.... that hen and her adolescent chicks.
@@thailandwild4897 My pool is suffering at the moment, a shikra has taken up residence around the garden.. I saw it carry off my resident W/T Kingfisher the other day..
Wow.... most unfortunate!! I was also surprised to see how often the crested goshawks visit... but then the other birds are back down to the pool within a few minutes. I have loads of shikra around the land, but have only had one visit to Rocky Pool.

Mmm... yes, I have heard about some very unpleasant things that happen in some places. Aweful.
Cambodia tore down all their trees so now they dont have food and when they do give them food its garbage usually starve them
