Hi, I started reefing in August 2014 with a Fluvial M90 and then upgraded to a Red Sea Reefer 450 in August 2015 and I set up this channel to document the journey of this tank and also the kit that I buy and review. Hope you enjoy the uploads!!!! paul
Testing Alkalinity In a Reef Tank: Learn from my mistake
I have been testing alkalinity in my reef tanks for as long as i have been in the hobby, almost every week without any major discrepancies until now..... I recently found my test kit results to be completely different to an ICP. Watch this video to find out how I found there might be a problem, confirm the issue and how I plan to put this right for the future.

The Red Sea Max Nano Peninsula is 2 years old and what a reefing journey it has been. If you have followed this tank journal for a while you will know that it has been the most challenging tank I have had in 10 years of reefing. Dinos appears to have gone but was then replaced by Algae but how does it look now. Watch now as I ass more livestock and get the tank back in shape

My sensor just failed the temperature did you find the replacement is better than the original
Thanks for watching. So far so good 🤞🏻
I would have thought a KH level that low would have meant all your corals would have suffered? The thing with reagents is when you crack that top it starts degrading. Once they are happy in a tank I have found Goniapora to be fairly resilient.
So far only the Goni has suffered and the rest seem ok although you can get a delayed reaction. Totally agree with reagent degrading although mine don’t last more than 6 months or so as I test 3 tanks weekly 🤷♂️. Thanks for watching
Did you then check with your LFS to confirm it was indeed your test/reagent going bad? I would’ve done that to be 100% sure
I have done that before but not on this occasion for this tank. Once RZ had double checked my results I was ok with that. Since then I have tested with 2 different home test kits and getting consistent results so I am ok with where the tank is now
Excellent advice here. Had a very similar situation recently myself. Thanks for posting Paul!
@@ReefRondo thanks Ron 🙏🏻. It is full of twists and turns along with stuff that you stumble across after being years in the hobby. Whilst it is a pain I ❤️ this hobby despite the 💩
Great video & information for new & older reefers to take into consideration Paul 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏻
Thanks. There is always some obstacle that comes at you when you least expect it, especially when you have been in the hobby for a while and did not expect reagent to go off but when you look back it is obvious. Use it 3 times a week, exposed to air and I put unused back into the container. 😢🤷♂️
Great video Paul, nice to make many aware of this issue!! I use the hanna checker but with many tanks can’t be expensive, I changed to it after having similar issues with a salifert test and a ICP!!
@@NorfolkReefer thanks for watching 👌🏻 a few reefers I know use hanna but like you say for me would be ongoing cost. I am happy with using Red Sea and NYOS as a back up. I should have spotted the spike in the alk and done an ICP or double checked the reading earlier but hey hindsight 🙌🏻.
@@fishpalace We live and learn!! Use what your used to, especially around cost but regular ICP are only a good thing confirming what we think is going on or a isolating a potential issue we can't test for !
Scary isnt it, most reefers cant afford regular ICP. I test a few times if i have a wierd result an dthen go to my lfs.
That’s a fair point as I asked my LFS to test ALK too as a 2nd opinion. Not done that before but gives you peace of mind. Thanks for watching
I am dosing All-for-reef to, bot don’t manganese. Can you tell me how much ml / day/ 100 l you dosing manganese? Thanks
I usually dose about 5ml per week but I will increase to 1ml per day as added an additional large Goni
@ Thank you for answering. I asked you because of goniopora which I have. I have some problems but with only one of 3 I have. The red one. I thought that AFR will deliver everything or almost everything but not. AFR works better then others balling. Corals look happier. Thank you very much. Ps. Sorry for my english 😂
@ ask away. AFR is great until you have a coral that feeds more on one element hence the need to dose other minor elements. Your English is 👌🏻
Also though Paul who's to say icp is always correct, I have had similar issues where I've had a weird reading back from icp. Glad I didn't follow what result I got from icp...... I double checked it with my 2 test kits and got LFS to test aswell without telling them my reading. All come back between a 0.5dkh variety which is fine for me. Obviously you had a issue but I didn't so I thought it was strange seeing a bizarre reading
Thanks for watching. Who knows with any test kit especially as we pay £20 to £30 and run our tanks on them although I have trusted them for 10 years and been good until now. That is why i asked Jose to double check. I now have a nyos and Red Sea so I can double check and as long as they are similar I will be happy with that
@@fishpalace same I have a Hanna and a salifert to double cross a dodgy reading. I certain can vouch for when reagent is close to end of bottle to just throw it and get a new reagent bottle as the readings go abit AWOL with Hanna. Salifert I never get towards end of bottles to confirm as for £10 I would rather replace on a yearly basis. I agree but I also when I get a random icp result with no actual issue within my tank I will certainly query it. I also had a very suspicious icp reading on salinity once. Again I'm glad at this point I didn't panic. Seemed weird alot of my levels were good but salinity tested low. Alot of people would panic and add salt. Icp lab said they had a issue and issued a free icp to retest so I couldn't knock that 👍
It is sooooo easy to knee jerk when you spot something or even worse do a number of things. Nothing wrong with questioning an ICP and to be fair reef Zlements were on it quickly to confirm an accurate reading. This hobby is a bloody minefield 🫣
Get yourself a Hanna ALK Checker
Thanks for watching. With 3 tanks and £1 per test I have stayed away from Hanna due to cost. this is my first test kit issue in the 10 years and I think I have now resolved as getting consistent results with nyos and Red Sea Alk test kit. Good idea 👌🏻🙌🏻
My LFS said don’t buy a Hanna unless you’re colour blind! Cost and inaccuracy apparently
@@troubleshooting114hanna by far better than most phos test kits.
@@troubleshooting114 100% correct not bad for phosphate
@@fishpalace Hanna Alk reagent cost £8 for 25 tests .. wouldn’t use anything else
Can you extend the tube to be shorter or longer to reach your tank? How long about is the tube it comes with?
You can shorten it but they say you shouldn’t extend it beyond the length received. I think it is 9 foot long but I am not 100% sure
I'm a pro when it comes to fresh water, now just sticking my big toe into marine/salt water tanks. Much of what you said went right over my head, but gives me lot to think about and research, so thanks. Keep these vids coming.
Tha ms for watching and yep there is a lot to take in when starting a saltwater aquarium. If you have any questions then you can message me on Instagram 👍🏻
Just watched as I missed the live but thanks for showing some fragging, esp Zoas as I think they always look like nightmare to do ☺️
Thanks for watching. Always easier when you can see how to do something. 👌🏻
Really enjoyed this fragging session, great to see how it is done. You are so brave chopping away at the corals, you got some lovely frags there to keep sustaining the hobby. Sorry I missed it love mate. Great video 😊👍
Thanks for watching Jay and no need to apologise as I know how busy you are 👌🏻
bro your tank looks dead lol
Thanks for watching. I really struggled with this tank starting with dead rock and sand. Has taken a long long time to get it where I want it. Take a look at my last video as tank is now where I want it to be 👌🏻👍🏻
The MP10 wet side is much more fragile than the MP40. In particular; the ceramic sleeve. I had 2 brand new mp10 ceramic sleeves break on me . And it causes the wetside to sound like a drill.
@@revZ098 thanks for watching. I have both and never givin it a thought but just had a look and get what you mean 😢
Great update my friend 👏👌🙌
Thanks for watching 💪👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
Love this How did you mount the wave maker magnet in the rear chamber safely?
Thanks for watching and your kind words. The AI Nero 3 magnet is safe to use in saltwater and when i clean the powerhead I check to make sure all ok. Fits snugly just under the return nozzle 👌🏻🙌🏻
Perseverance 💪
Probably the number 1 thing you need in this hobby. Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
Tank looks incredible 🙌✨....patience has really paid off here. So many beautiful and healthy corals. Loved the video 👍
Thanks for watching Jay. How often have we said on livestreams be patient but also regular maintenance 👌🏻👍🏻
Great update Paul, it’s always a great boost to the confidence knowing your winning the battle especially when you can see with your own eyes the obvious improvements in the tank and in the test results. 👍
Thanks for watching. It was only after I had looked back at the video from 3 months ago that I realised how much better the rockwork, sand and corals looked. One of the reasons why I make these videos as a great journal
Wow paul big yes from me love it ❤
Thanks for the ❤️, appreciate it 👌🏻
That fat head alvepora looks stunning, need to get a frag for sure, tanks starting to look great!
Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I have not fragged an alveopora before but always a first time
How much space do you have between the tank and the wall?
I would say about 4 inches or 10 cm’s. Thanks for watching
Great information
@@junietisdale1074 thanks for watching 🙌🏻 and your kind words 👌🏻
I think there’s a lot more to it then that 😂
@ I agree there is other stuff you need to do such as good husbandry, make sure your salinity is 1.025 and keep parameters stable but this can be a simple hobby and the 3 tips work for me in this tank. Thanks for watching
@fishpalace no problem. I'm actually a horticulturist, so that is something that interests me even though not really a plant
A lot of corals show similar behaviour in terms of light, nutrition and competing for space with other plants when they grow out
Loved these videos.. about to take the plunge and get my first ever reef tank.. going for this exact tank, your honesty is great.. I’m now ready for a rollercoaster of a journey Keep up your great work 👍🏻

great review Paul, Thanks
@@theeastcoastreefer thanks for watching Steve 👌🏻. Tank is nearly 5 years old and looks the same as it did when I bought it. Quality build 💪
I also had issues with the ATO+ and raised a UK Support ticket last Friday. They sent me a V2 replacement because I had issues with water levels fluctuating too much and because my sensor was the original type. Problem was picked up immediately and a new one sent yesterday that I received today. Support in UK is quick to rectify issues. I have seen wide fluctuations in RO water consumed. Normally about 3L a day but recently about 10+ lites. My tank is Reefer 625 G2. One observation, is the height in the weir isn’t static and setting the water height a cm below the overflow seems unrealistic as a change in level does translate to a large water uptake. The bubble sponge seems to clog quite easily. Recently I switched to half the depth but it’s perhaps time to replace the sponge after 2+ years? I don’t use the Syphon Breaker because (for me) it leaked too much and no water reached the sump. Also, it’s not needed if pumping water up hill and the outlet is above my RO tank. The reference to RO uptake and Calc usage isn’t an issue as the replacement RO water doesn’t change the salinity (in theory). For now the level in tank is at the overflow e.g. some flow down it. Not ideal, but necessary. Fingers crossed V2 sensor will help but old one was pretty simple and did test ok even if results using it were variable.
Many thanks for watching and for your comprehensive update 👏🏻👏🏻. The set up in a sumped tank clearly brings it’s own challenges compared to the all in one but sounds like you have it under control 🙌🏻. All the best 👌🏻💪
Nice one Paul. Great picks and advice.
Thanks for watching 🙌🏻 👌🏻
I have to keep my Favia separate as it has some tasty sweepers. My Duncan is in relatively high flow and high light and seems quite happy.
Just shows how different corals from the same species can be so different. Def need to do your research before you buy a piece so that you place near it far from others. Duncan’s are just great corals to have as easier to care for and add both color and movement to any tank 🙌🏻. Thanks for watching
Scape still looking fab Great choice of corals good advice on their care chalice spot on 🔥🔥🔥
@@tonycloseukreef3799 thanks for watching and your comments 👌🏻 the floating aquascape has been a joy to create and maintain
Some great picks, hardy and affordable , perfect for a nano coral reef. Brilliant video 👍
So much is made of torches and Goni’s, which we both lower and love, but not the best corals to start with when your learning this hobby. So many other colourful corals that are hardier and still pop
Hey it’s the uber driver from outside David saxby house, I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS ! 😂😂😂😂😂

Great video & Very nice examples Paul 👌🏼- I would have all of them in my tank ☺️
Thanks for watching 🙌🏻. Glad you agree 👍🏻
Great video Paul!
Thanks Ron. Just watched your video with new camera. Love the colour and clarity, nice one
Thanks Paul. For tips iv just ordered to gonis how much do u dose a week
Different across my tanks. 2m per week in 100L tank that has a 20% water change; 4ml per week in a 280L tank that has all for reef and 2 ml per week in 170l tank that has all for reef and 10% water change per week. The good news is it is difficult to overdose as it can participate. Not sure if that helps 🤞🏻
@fishpalace thanks Paul big help
For those wondering, you don’t need the baffle for the G2 models
That is good to know and a simple but effective improvement 👏🏻
Absolutely love my Radion Gen 5 LPS template. I've ran that one from say one. Brilliant video with some great advice - set and forget. Thank you for sharing these tips 👍
As reefers we tend to tinker but I agree set up and go wins for me 👍🏻
I'm on a very tight budget and couldn't afford to get Radions, but I did get a light similar to these lights that come from China. Only time will tell
I am still using Gen 3 radions that are 9 years old. They grow coral just fine. IMO Gen 4 are great value too and a big step up from Gen 3 so worth a look. Thanks for watching
Great little video Paul, I do like that simple template selection for radions, I picked AB+ 7 yrs ago and never touch them since apart from increasing the intensity
@@pelagicswimmer snap. I set it up and let it play. Mind you I first used radions when it was not in an app so making changes was a real pita. Thanks for watching and just caught up on your latest video. Something always seem to go wrong when you are away. Hope the Goni recovers 🤞🏻
Same Rob. Set and forget. Thanks for posting Paul!
Thanks for watching Ron. The more I reef the more I am thinking less tinkering although practice what i preach is not easy

how are you finding the ATO? I've heard a lot of reports with people having issues with the level sensor
I love it not only as an ATO but as a tank monitor with temp and leak monitor. The sensor failed after 12 months but fair play to Red Sea they replaced it within 2 working days. I made a 12 month review video and couple of months ago, if your interested. Thanks for watching
@@fishpalace thanks, I have almost got one several times. my only reluctance really is the inability to integrate with Apex, I need to see where my Apex journey goes, its stalled at the moment but what I really want is one App with everything in :-) I'll find your 12 month review and take a look.
Apex has an ATO but not looked at for years so not sure if spec or how good it is. Totally understand aligning all your kit with 1 app though. I love my apex and had it for over 9 years. This is on the nano where I don’t have an apex.
maybe the torch is stinging the candy cane
Thanks for watching. The candy cane started to go downhill before I moved the torch off of the sandbed. I think it was parameter related as I dosed loads of silicate, no water changes and let the tank try and sort itself out. Only after getting back to basics has it turned around
