    Older video I know but question for anyone who may know. I know the TZ7/9 were a collab with TAD but were the ST100,300, and especially 500’s series also a collab with them? I know they some different material used on the cones I believe but they resemble the TZ7’s quite a bit. I know things like the crossovers are probably different too.

    From an objective performance perspective, I think we have reached the end of the class A era. If the goal is high-power, high damping, neutral "wire with gain", it's hard to beat today's best class D amps. I think that there will remain a small market for these among those that enjoy the technology for its own sake. Kind of like having a DEC Vax in your study, or an old Bugatti in your garage. Today, nobody buys these for their performance. It's about the love for how they were made.

    • @theaudioanalyst

      Hello, Mark. Clearly, we will have to agree to disagree here. Your opening statements, “From an objective performance perspective…” and “If the goal is high-power, high damping, neutral "wire with gain", it's hard to beat today's best class D amps.” indicate two things to me. First, you are more interested in specifications and measurement than listening, and second, you likely have very little experience listening to the class of product under discussion here. I have followed “Class D” audio amplification since its “practical” development. My friend, the late John Ulrich, with Arnie Nudel, introduced the Infinity Systems Servo-Static I loudspeaker in the early 1970s. The Servo-controlled sub in that system was driven by one of the first “practical” audio applications of a Class D amp, which John named the SwAmp - for Switching Amplifier, which yielded 250 watts per channel, and ran at a switching frequency of 500 kHz! I have listened to the progress of this class ever since. And while Class D has consistently and rapidly matured (I had a Spectron Musician II in 2000 - a John Ulrich design that was a game changer, and many other UcD and Hypex devices since), especially with the advances leveraged using GaN transistors or the new Trajectum platform (Mola Mola’s refined Hypex Electronics NCORE® technology), even the very best entrants from this class do not offer the refinement of resolution and transparency one experiences at the feet of current flagship products from the likes of Audionet, Boulder, Soulution, True Life Audio, VAC, and others. Class D, as good as it has become, will continue get better. I expect that at some point, it may encroach upon, rival, or maybe even best the sonic envelope constructed by the most refined Class A and A/B machines available today. But that day is not yet here… Sorry.

      I've auditioned and owned some of the best over the last 50 years. At dealers, shows, and my listening rooms. I won't make assumptions about your priorities, preferences, and experience as you did mine, so as you said - let's agree to disagree.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@markrosenthal9108 Hello again, Mark. So, I’d apologize save for the fact that you needn’t make any “assumptions” about my “priorities, preferences, and experience.” And though I’ve been at this for over five decades now, all those things have been in the public domain in my writing for going on forty years at this point. With that on the table, your proclivities and experiences are completely unknown to us here. While you are welcome to expand upon them, there can be no question that your first statement clearly suggests that you support measurement over listening… And if you have somehow come to the opinion that even the most accomplished Class D amplifier out there (clearly, no one has heard everything, but…) can begin to present the subtleties and nuances of microdynamic expression (among other attributes) like a pair of Boulder 3050 mono’s (or some other equivalent quality electronics), you are only deluding yourself. So while we clearly disagree, I can just as clearly support my position.

    When it comes to Boulder looking at gaps in their product range... So long as standards are maintained I wouldn't mind one bit if they fell within my means. But more excitingly they WILL continue to chase levels beyond what's already been achieved... Boulder in 40 years time! I can not imagine the prices, materials, design or performance.. but I bet their amps that are around now will STILL be great then. 👍🏻

    In addition to MC and MM there's also MI (moving iron) and SG (Strain Gauge). MI was originally B&O, but now (like SG) almost entirely SoundSmith. The SoundSmith SG is most similar in that it modulates a power supply voltage, which is what this DS does, only the SG design probably involves a lot less moving mass. The main weaknesses in the SoundSmith design are the power supply and the preamp stage, both of which are massively improved here. At great expense, but apparently well worth it. Thanks for another great and beautifully detailed review.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello, Charles. I hope it would be clear that I am well aware of both moving iron and the SoundSmith championed Strain Guage cartridge designs. You also must be aware that both methods combined occupy such a minuscule portion of the market that it really made no sense to go into their design and implementation in the limited time restrictions available for the TH-cam format! And thank you for watching, and for taking the time to write! PS - I love your profile image of Reginald Dwight from the cover of his "Honky Chateau" release! 😉

    • @charlesmiller6281
      @charlesmiller6281 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@theaudioanalyst Thanks. Your reviews are impressively comprehensive and I could have been more clear. My thought is a survey of phono cartridge designs seems to show a trend where lower moving mass yields increased fidelity. Designers pursue this many other ways of course- stiffer less resonant materials, more powerful magnets, even electro-magnets (field coil designs) - but in general they all strive for extreme low moving mass. This seems to be a winning formula. It is hard to believe the LEDs in this design are lower mass than some of the low mass MI or MC, let alone SG. That's not to cast doubt on the design, or your review, which I am sure both are rock solid. It is to say the eddy currents the photo-cells eliminate are probably a much bigger problem than most would think. I for one am certainly surprised.

    Nice review, thanks. FYI, the mid - woofers are more like 8" and the woofers closer to 11" as I've owned both the G2S2s and the Spirits and have measured both of their bass drivers.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello. I'm not sure where you've gotten this mistaken information, but the Moya's use mid-woofers that are 175 mm drivers, which are 6.889" or just under 7", NOT 8" as you mistakenly suggest. The same is true with the woofers, which are 225 mm drivers, or 8.858", much closer to 9", and nowhere NEAR the 11" dimension you mistakenly imply. I'm sorry, but you seem completely misinformed on the Maya M1 driver complement.

    • @sbonamo
      @sbonamo 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@theaudioanalyst First, look up GTT audio video of the Spirits and you'll see how he explains that Lawrence only includes the cone not the surround as other manufactures do WRT driver diameter. It's also mentioned in half the Giya reviews. Second, I literally owned the G2 S2s and own the Spirits so, you, my friend are completely ill - informed. Do a little research next time. Third - the model is Moya not Maya. Lastly, a little advice - do away with the all caps, it's unbecoming unless you're 12 and under.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sbonamo First, I clearly mistyped Maya (corrected), as there can be no question that I'm well aware of the what the speaker's name is. Further, I don't need to go back to "look" at anything to understand Dic's choices, as I've known him for over fifteen years. And to that end, the published dimensions are exactly what I shared. The driver's piston area - without the addition of the surrounds or included basket frames, are as measured. If you knew him, you'd understand why he distances himself from such "exaggerated" measurement practices. As to the Giya G1 Spirits, I have had them in my room. I did the first US review of them back in Issue TAS 283, May-June 2018 - www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/vivid-audio-giya-g1-spirit-loudspeaker/ Finally, as to my use of capitalization, or anything else related to how I choose to express myself, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

    • @sbonamo
      @sbonamo 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@theaudioanalyst Here's another tip - get off your, "I'm old and have reviewed a lot of speakers and know the designer so I can do no wrong", it's unbecoming and pompous. Second, I've conversed with Lawrence more than once and I didn't just hear some Vivids a few times, I 've owned his products for years. (Then there's your first review, then your second review which contradicts the first review). Thirdly, I never stated your driver diameter specs were incorrect, I said, "The mid - woofers are more like 8" and the woofers closer to 11" as I've owned both the G2S2s and the Spirits and have measured both of their bass drivers." And finally, the caps make you look like a child, there's no agreeing or not. Take it for what it's worth. Have a good one!

      @theaudioanalyst 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sbonamo LOL... If I ever even imply I cannot make a mistake, or that I know it all, I'll hang it up. We all must continue to learn. When we stop to be open to growing and increasing our knowledge, we may as well just check out. Here is a tip for you - if you start a conversation by suggesting that the designer of the product under examination is somehow misinforming the public about his products - in particular, by how he chooses to accurately portray the piston area of the drivers he is using, even if it falls outside the parameters used by other manufacturers, perhaps you may see how THAT choice may be viewed as "unbecoming and pompous." And your misunderstanding as to the use of capitalization, italicization, quotation marks, and special punctuation in online communications, to emphasize or to somehow be more expressive, then again, you are the one completely misinformed. I do not enjoy pissing contests, so let's just chalk this one up to misunderstanding, shall we?

    Common sense. If the albums you are listening to were mastered on standard cables, and you believe audiophile cables extract more information than standard cables, where is this information your hearing comming from? Its laughable that albums are mastered with well engineered copper cables costing a few bucks, and that audiophiles claim they are inferiour, if that is the case and these high end cables get more information, then either the budget cables also relay this information, or you imagine it. You do get that if your reference is the information on the recording, and all that timbre, nuance, detail is present, it is there on that recording because the cheap cable did not hinder it. If the cheap cable hinders it, it can't be on the recording, so you cannot be hearing what you claim. You can have one or the other not both. For you to hear such nonsense in a high end cable means the studio cable must have just been as good otherwise what your hearing would not be present on the recording, if your claiming the studio cables is less capable than the audiophile cable, then your saying the information your claiming to hear cannot be on the recording.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The only thing laughable here is your complete ignorance on the matter. I’m surprised that you aren’t embarrassed to reveal publicly just how little you understand about it… The source, in this case, the final LP pressing being played back on our turntable, is what it is, regardless of what cables - or whatever other components and electronics for that matter - were used to master, cut, and press it. NOTHING after it is stamped and on your turntable can improve upon its best possible sound… But what you don’t understand is that it is the process of extracting everything that is cut into that LP that makes the difference. Consider birdwatching a Robin in a tree in your backyard with DIFFERENT binoculars, an analogy to playing back the same LP with different cabling - or any component for that matter. Watching that bird using a pair of $40 TASCO 7x35 binoculars will allow you to readily see more than your bare eyes, and to see that it IS a Robin, revealing much of its individual detail, like its individual characteristics and plumage features… Moving to a set of $250 Bushnell Marine 7x50 Illumin Compass Binoculars, a very common high-quality set of birding binoculars, with considerably more attention paid to the quality of the glass and grinding of the lenses, tighter tolerances in assembly and interaction, and with the use of chemical coating on the lenses to reduce glare and lower the light lost through transmission, will allow you to see more relevant differences in EVERYTHING about that very same Robin, offering both a brighter and sharper image, with a better ability to express a wider, more faithful range of color hues and differences in patterning, and more clearly exposing bill, eye, and head features, etc. Yet, switching to a $10,000 pair of Zeiss 20x60 binoculars, which maximize EVERY CONSIDERATION in the construction of a fine set of optical binoculars will advance all those characteristics further yet… Not only will they offer greater magnification, but they also offer an enhanced ability to more clearly render color variation, feather patterns, and every possible detail about the Robin under examination. While the Robbin (our LP) NEVER changed, our ability to have a clearer, more faithful representation of it CAN be shown to be improved by changing the quality of the binoculars (cables) used to view (listen to) it. You really shouldn’t speak out on matters of which you have no understanding…

    I would love to hear your take on the Grimmaudio MU2 when connected directly to your amplifiers and speakers (yes by bypassing your very high-end preamplifier and, of course, using silversmith XLR IC and speaker cables). The MU2 is a combined streamer, Roon server, DAC and pre-amplifier and when used directly for digital playback the musicality and level of refinement is impressive. From their website : "Its built-in DAC takes full advantage of the Grimm Audio low jitter clock and high performance FPGA processor and high resolution Pure Nyquist upsampling filters are combined with a fundamentally flawless 11th order noise shaper of 1.5 bit". I know your friends at GTT claim that the MU1/Tambaqui DAC could sound better but... They have a commercial stake in the game. I truly enjoy your unbiased and honest reviews and product presentations, and would love to see how you enjoy it in your high-end system

I had top of the line Audience cables but a dealer in Montreal, Lemay Audio, was kind enough to lend me a a set of both to try... I was simply stunned. I only wish I could find additional qualitative comments to add to your very well articulated review of these cables. My Audience cables found a new home and I truly enjoy my new Silversmith cables. The only downside is that they are bound to increase in price just because they deserve it compared to other manufacturers. I'm just happy to have able to buy them at that price. @@theaudioanalyst The refinement and transient properties you talk about are what really sold me. But with the Silversmith, there is detail and separation without the brilliance normally experienced with other cables (although the Audience were not aggressive, they did not provide the same level of refinement). Refined, detailed and smooth...What more can I say...

When I first read of DS Audios optical pickup for vinyl I vaguely remembered Toshiba (and perhaps a small handful of other Japanese manufacturers) having an interest in a less accomplished version some time back... Greetings from the UK, Greg. Another fascinating and detailed presentation of the new kid on the block of the cartridge world. Your grasp of the concepts involved and the ability to explain in layman's terms is a great credit to you. However good the DS Audio system may be, it is still a mechanical system that is subject to the inherent constraints provided by the laws of physics. I am looking forward to the day when the musical information is lifted out of the vinyl groove by laser process - completely devoid of mechanical constraints. In my opinion, that will be the pinnacle of musical fidelity. It just needs someone - probably from the far east - to design the system. Looking forward to that day ...

It never once sounded like typical digital gear, even some of the best I've heard, like the Ideon Absolute Suite that I use, the Spanish WADAX Atlantis three-box stack, or the Esoteric Grandios five-piece suite. And it so clearly bests the well-known and regarded three letter systems like MSB and dCS... These products set a new standard - in my personal experience - for making significant advances in the sound of digital playback.

    Unless I missed it, you didn't talk about how it dealt with surface noise (ticks and pops), compared to a typical phono cart. Laser based turntables are extremely good in this regard. The only problem with them is the record has to be perfectly clean in order for it to work. The upside is it reads the record like a CD, so nothing actually touches it.

    • @theaudioanalyst
      @theaudioanalyst 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Greg, you always have a way of describing and breaking down complex matters in a way that even I can comprehend. I finally get it how this optical system works its magic. This coverage couldn't be more timely. Bing retired, as you are, I too must deal with the realities of costs and spending. My dealer (Dr Vinyl) brought to my house and installed in my system the newest and least expensive cartridge in the DS Audio line (the DS- E3) for me to audition. The unit was brand spanking new with zero hours on it. Within seconds of the needle drop, I was immediately stunned and transfixed by what I heard. As you mentioned, the quietness is remarkable and the explosive dynamics are propelled from a sea of darkness that was startling. The soundstage is insanely wide and spacious and all the subtle nuances within the music are easily heard and apparent. All the while, the cartridge system remains balanced, unfatiguing and with killer low-end slam and tightness. Frankly, I can't imagine that the other cartridges up the chain can be much better, as I could easily be content and happy with the DS-E3. Nonetheless, Dr Vinyl will be installing the DS-W3 this week to audition. Beyond question, this Optical Cartridge technology is astonishing and is a true game changer...
