    When I started in tech I did not expect every woman to be Sandi Metz, but I did respect them all the same. Now, everytime I see a woman with a platform, talking at a conference or or podcast I start having a PTSD episode and ask myself "she's gonna start talking about women in STEM".

    Regarding Restic, I was using it about a year ago for daily backups. After I few months I just happened to run across a command to check the validity of Restic backup files. It showed that almost all my Restic backups were corrupted and Restic was giving me no notification about this. I ditched Restic right away and switched to something else. I don't know if this bug has been fixed, so be aware of this. Thanks for all the great videos! Cheers.

    Nat, Microsoft does a similar thing called "redirect". In a Microsoft environment, you use a GPO (assuming a NOS) to redirect the "my files", etc. get pointed to One Drive. You can point it anywhere, but I only use it at work, if you don't mind. You can formally cache one drive file, but it could work better.

    I have been the go to tech person for my family since the mid 90s and I don't mind for the most part the thing that DOES annoy me is the assumption that I'll just fix it so people come to me with the most basic googleable problems they encounter without trying anything and then refuse to listen along as I explain how its solved. I want to enable people to enjoy tech and fix their own things not rely solely on me as a go to.

    Sounds like you should get a Thinkpad T480 instead if you don't need a dedicated graphics card. But if you need a beefier gpu that is not nvidia, I would look into 1st or 2nd gen T14 or equivalent in P series with amd apu.

    • @LinuxOutLoud
      @LinuxOutLoud 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would generally have looked at those as options, however Nvidia is still generally speaking the GPU that works the best for me when it comes to things such as NVENC, and a few other things that for me, AMD does not do from a content production POV. The Surface Book fits much more of the every situation device I need given that I am traveling a lot and need the flexibility that it offers, that a traditional 2 in 1 or laptop doesnt provide. - Matt

    It literally took a few years since I bought my controller but it now works. "You should have looked it up". I tried, the problem is that the name of my controller is the same for 3 different models: 8bit do pro 2. A BT-version, a wired norma version and a wired XBox version. It turned out that SDL2 mapped the controller wrong while it mapped the BT-version normal. It has 3 different modes and you have to switch between modes by holding a button while connecting. XBox-mode, Switch-mode and something else. The XBox-mode now works normal but at first all modes were broken on sdl2 but not for the kernel, sdl2 did some weird remapping from the 'analog' sticks to the buttons and vice versa, renderig it non-usable for any game which uses sdl2, which surprisingly is most games, which I found out the hard way. For example also Hollow Knight. SuperTuxKart put me on the trace of sdl2 being the problem, a specific sdl2-controller-testing tool proved it. jstest proved that the kernel did map the controller correctly. Now the company which makes 8bitdo advertises this controller for the SteamDeck, so I guess that the SteamDeck helped to fix this bug?

      @@LinuxOutLoud I am a K+M-gamer too! I play almost all games with keyboard and mouse and StarCraft2 is one of my favorite games. In regard to fan-rpm's on AMD vs NVidia, it is the AIB which is the problem. I currently have a Powercolor 5700 XT (RD), I don't hear the fan while gaming, it goes up to roughly 86 degrees C while gaming. People can argue if that is too hot or not (I am inclined to think that 60-70 degrees C might be a better balance) but that is the setting, at least for the silent BIOS-version. The problem for me is that the card has a 0-rpm mode but then switches from 0 rpm to a bit over 1000 RPM immediately, there is no in-between step. I noticed that MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS don't care at all about their AMD-cards. In brief: the premium MSI RX 580 couldn't handle the power and got noisy and hot, Gigabyte failed to deliver a stable Vega-card and ASUS literally sold a defect product with their 5700 XT and they never fixed it. For AMD I highly recommend to only buy Sapphire or PowerColor, maybe ASRock.

    • @LinuxOutLoud
      @LinuxOutLoud 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I (Wendy) never stick to the stock fan curve. I don't want it at 0 rpm. I think I start of at 30%. The same fan curve on the Nvidia is just quiter. I don't know if they use higher quality fans or what...

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LinuxOutLoud I am in favor of 0 rpm, my fan probably should ramp up a bit more while gaming though, the noise of the fan wouldn't bother if it would spin hard enough to keep the temperature around 80 degrees C or lower, even with my open Hifiman headphones which I highly recommend for the sound-quality (planar magnetic drivers, not so expensive) if you don't mind to eventually replace the cable (standard plugs). I had an HD 7850 from Sapphire too, that fan could get obnoxiously loud, these days Powercolor and Sapphire use fans which are not so loud. I just recommend to stay away from MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS, I can't judge the quality of the other two but based on the reviews XFX is not so good and ASRock does decent. Just to substantiate my claim: MSI its GamingX RX 580 was a trainwreck (Computerbase review, they adjusted it after that review, it couldn't handle more than 150 W), Gigabyte its Vega-cards weren't stable and ASUS made a mess of the 5700 XT by not having a properly attached heatsink because they used screws which were too long.

      it depends on the model of the mac if its any of the M processors there not much i can say as i havent looked at them ashai linux gets mentioned a lot. If its a mac with a t2 security chip things somethings are a bit rough there even if its x86. t2linux.org/ is a good resource to see the current state of those. Generally id say if its a 2012 or older there shouldnt be many issues with a general x86 linux iso. Again without knowing more specifics about it I can only speak very generally about them, as I've never been a fan of Apple so my experience is limited without me looking into it more fully - Matt

      @@LinuxOutLoud I couldn't agree more. I despise Apple but I'd rather keep a computer out of the landfill more than I hate Apple. I know absolutely nothing about their hardware so thank you for giving me a general rundown.

    In Discord chat I've used (different servers as well) people use and receive thumbs up plenty well. I've never had anyone tell me or or otherwise get any indication that thumbs up was "snarky" or whatever. I've even seen thumbs up and down used as a way of polling people on a subject. They click the thumbs up or down reply for a yes or no poll on something.

    In re 45:17, you need to replace Barrier or Synergy with Input Leap, which implements Wayland support. Most distributions haven't gotten around to shipping it yet, though. In re 46:20, openSUSE's kernel is missing binderfs support. This is enabled in Fedora and Waydroid works on it because of that.

    Professional software is missing. And every one is out there making one more desktop environment. Scribus, a free desktop publisher program, has like two developers working on it. And don't get me started on CAD, I just deleted my rant on CAD on Linux. If the software available on Linux is decades behind stuff available on Windows and MacOS, then Linux is decades behind. There is no bleeding edge version of Linux.

      And that bring up my love hate relationship with browser based applications (Wendy here). I think this is also a place where universal packing could help bring other proprietary software to Linux, if we can help companies see we are willing to support it.

    Yes - Remmina is far the best "stuffware" to remotecontrol. All pcs in my home network are reachable by Remmina, but I use krfb instead of krdp, i am on Manjaro and Xfce. So I can reach also the one an oly "windose" pc for testing purposes by Remmina, the rest is Linux because it is far easier and more stressless to me manage them over Linux.
