Based on my calculations, even if I lived right on the coast and the wind blew all the time, based on my current power bill, it would still take a minimum of 15 years to breakeven. Realistically, I don’t believe it ever would

One consideration that I find very much understated is in the comparison between horizontal and vertical wind mills, is the sheer footprint required for horizontal mills when you take anchoring and wiring into account. For our own location as an example, I can say we're in a consistently windy coastal area. Yet our property is in the vicinity of trees as well and space is limited. The vertical mills might generate less in a 1:1 comparison to an equal size horizontal mill, but considering the horizontal mill will require more turbulence free consistent winds, it would require height and potentially cutting down of some trees! For the same ground area with less height I can have multiple vertical mills instead with each a much smaller footprint on the property. So basically looking at the kW per square meter on a property for mill footprints.

Another mistake is overestimating the wind. Consumer wind turbines have rated speed, often above 10 m/s. Unless your area gives much wind, a mistake of installing it would only produce a nearly useless amount of energy that you'd get per day - barely just for lighting purposes.

There is a lot of room for adjusting the height and width ratio of the trusses and sails. I think it is best to look around and even do your own experiments. It is an open field and the more the merrier. Watching a video of lab wind tests it seems that cylinder sails capped with discs cut into small fins not only is the most efficient but doesn't require starter blades

We got 9000 kwh from the ds3000 in southwest minnesota. Almost 4x what is rated at.

I am more interested in the high wind speed servivbility as we're i am i had 2 die & i know of 3 small to medium industrial wind generators that have died due to high wind speeds. Also if thay servive will thay still produce any electricity at higher wind speeds.

Maybe off topic slightly, but in the early 1980s I stayed in an off grid rural shack that had a couple of car batteries 12v fed trickle charge by a small wind turbine. This powered a somewhat function, if gloomy low voltage home light system and a portable TV set (B&W). The thing is we never ran out of power for 2 of us. It occurred to me the technology for this set up (minus the TV) must have been around since the 30s or 40s, but I cannot find much in the way of evidence this was in use back then. I guess most people used candles or kerosene lamps. Of course with advances in LED lighting our 1980s lighting system would be more effective. I’d imagine that the sort of set up in this YT video would leave our DIY “primitive” 1980s system in the dust.

Hi, i live in rural Finland. I have solar panels but want to consider a small roof top wind turbine as well, mainly for winter months. I am finding all the information rather overwhelming! Vertical vs horizontal, that would add to my solar plug and play system. Every time i think i uave a plan something contradicts my plan and im back to squre one. Can people help me with a step by step plan or overall advice? I know this is asked ng a lot but i don't want to give up! I posted this on the 17th of July 2024 at 10.47am Finnish time.

you do realize that small purpose wind turbines are used in the city and people's private houses and in this urban areas where amongst buildings and other things maybe hillsides the wind direction changes really rapidly and frequently and so there's no way that a horizontal axis win turbine can keep up with it it can't they can't move that faster used to a single direction of wind hitting the middle all the time and it open field airplane and so the vertical axis wind turbines are not going to be good there but anywhere else you want a vertical wind axis turbine in the cities on hillside's anywhere in urban areas where there's constant changing direction wind and you can see and around your house the wind's blowing from one direction then another you can just look at the which way the winds are blowing the leaves are blowing so you're kind of wrong on almost any sense except for grand scale large industrial wind farms any small scale use of a wind turbine is going to want a vertical axis unless you're on a boat perhaps where you're out at sea in the wind is only going to be coming from pretty much one direction and I'm given time and the horizontal axis wind turbine will have enough time to change its orientation. it doesn't do any good if a horizontal axis wind turbine is not facing the wind because the wind changed direction so think of that otherwise great video

Assuming no repairs or maintenance over a 20 year period is not realistic. Probably need to add at least 20% of the initial cost for maintenance, insurance, repairs, etc. Residential wind is almost never cost effective. Its value is in providing energy for off-grid locations where there aren’t other options.

According to the test certificate given the DS3000 I can read that the "Rated Annual Energy" value is 2,460 kW. As kW is not the unit for energy but for power it makes me disbelieve that this so called "independent test" is a legitimate test, performed by skilled personnel.

Hallo, ich bin auf der Suche nach einem sehr kleinen Windrad und das erweist sich als erstaunlich schwierig. Dieses Windrad soll nur eine Powerbank speisen, mit der ich mein Smartphone lade. Ich bin oft mit dem Kajak unterwegs und kann ein Windrad ca. 1 m über der Wasseroberfläche installieren. Wenn ich an Land biwakiere, soll das Windrad die ganze Nacht laufen. Da ich auf dem Smartphone dauerhaft eine Navigationsapp laufen lasse, verbrauche ich schon einiges an Strom, sodaß ich das Handy ständig nachladen muss. Im Gegensatz zu einem Solarpanel könnte das Windrad 24 Stunden "mitlaufen". An Bord erscheint mit ein Windrad mit vertikaler Achse am besten geeignet, weil es die geringsten negativen Effekte auf das Kajak hat. Es ist schwierig, geeignete Informationen zu finden, welche technischen Parameter für das Windrad selbst und für die Ladelektronik für diesen Zweck erforderlich sind. Leider kann man auch nichts fertig kaufen - alle Ansätze ideenreicher Menschen sind bisher im Sand verlaufen.

Hi, thank you for this video. I'm completely off grid, with a 5.4 kw solar system and 10kw Pylontech 48 volt battery system living in Portugal. Even in the winter this system is sufficient for our needs. But I would like to switch to a AC inverter heating system for in the winter instead of a fire place. That means I need some more energy and would like to combine with a small wind turbine. I have a free standing house and the wind is not blocked from any direction as I don't have neighbors. As we do have the fires in the summer all the big trees burned down in 2022 and we have very strong wind. Can you recommend me a small wind turbine? I can't figure it out by myself. Thanks a lot 🙏
