I took a class yesterday at my local quilt shop. I had a very difficult time trying to understand the concept of trimming the blocks, so I packed up what I had already done, unplugged my machine and gave up. I was sure someone on TH-cam would have a tutorial on how to do it, so I found Poppy Patchwork. Thank you so much for your help! I am sure by the end of the weekend my wall hanging will be finished. On this POP Fabric B says 4 3 1/2 square but when building the block it says 4 1/2 squares do you know which is correct. Thanks for any help.

I hadn’t thought of this for years. I was given one 45 years ago at baby shower for my oldest. Before he was done I had to make 2 more. He loved them to death.I made one for his son when he was born. I just pulled out scraps for one for my granddaughter. A whole generation later still being loved.

I love the patterns these star blocks make with the acute angles in the blocks (however you decide to craft them). Some of these substitutions also help with keeping the cohesion of prints that are at the center of a block (v. shoulders).I want to share a time saving approach to consider in making this fantastic quilt that you beautifully demonstrated: reduce seaming/piecing and time by: (1) using Triangle in Square units v. 2 half rectangles ; or (2) better, use diamond rectangles in place of either (Deb Tucker has a great ruler) and treat these as a sashing; (3) simplify the uneven 9 patch (green blocks) by strip piecing the ends and putting a solid square in the middle. Also strip piece and subcut the interior four patch. A stripology ruler is a fantastic aid however you approach this.

Beautiful quilt. I've made several of these. There's many ways to skin the quilt cat. To cut down on individual blocks I made some modifications on my production: (1) For the two split rectangles, make 1 Triangle in Square unit. Better yet, make 1 Diamond rectangle as these units are joined at the wide base. (2) 4 HST's can be substituted for 1 square in square block. This works particularly well if there is directional fabric or if you want fabric continuity. The quilt then requires your making just 2 blocks. (And it is best to have trim down rulers to help with this, which I have. It makes production a breeze). Patterns such as this show how striking a two material quilt can be as the geometry (in this instance the lovely undulating squares). Thank you for sharing this striking pattern.

Two years later…I’m making this block. Mistake about finishing the little HST’s on the edge…should “say” FINISH TO 2”….NOT 1 1/2”. I made it work but my block is not the size it should be.
