How to Use a Triad Template
Plan watercolor triads with ease with the new Art Toolkit Triad Template, co-designed by Lisa Spangler! Using the small sections for primary colors and the larger sections for mixing secondary colors, this template helps to explore color mixes, creating unity in your paintings and bringing harmony to your watercolor mixes. In this video, Art Toolkit Founder Maria Coryell-Martin demonstrates how to use the Triad Template with a variety of triads.

We’ve been amazed at the many different ways Pocket Palette owners have been customizing their palettes using our stainless steel watercolor pans. After scratching our heads about this around the shop, we really wanted to know-how many different ways can our four pan sizes be arranged in a Pocket Palette?

Warm and Cool Colors
มุมมอง 1.6K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Today, we’re demystifying warm and cool colors. You’re probably already familiar with thinking about reds, oranges, and yellows as warm, and greens, blues, and purples as cool. Today, we’d like to share how hues within each color can lean cooler or warmer through swatching paints, painting a color wheel, and sharing another example palette. For this demonstration, we built a special Demi Palett...

Today, we are sketching our neighborhood of Victorian buildings in downtown Port Townsend! Four members of the Art Toolkit team took a 10-minute break to sketch kitty-corner views from the cross streets outside our retail shop! Which Rosemary & Co Brush is Right for You?
I love fountain pens and inks too! Yes it can be a rabbithole! I have found Pilot Kakuno to be a nice pen for sketching and quite inexpensive. I just refill my emptied cartridges with bottled fountain pen ink. A dropper or syringe works great for the refills. I enjoy using JetPens as a supplier, as well as Goulet Pens.
What a fantastic session! Thank you Art Toolkit and Eileen.
Oh what a video after my heart! There are many possibilities with fountain pens. One pen is a “good start”. The only other possibility is a stick and dipping but it’s not very portable, so fountain pens are the best option. I don’t have deArtimis ink yet, but I’m sure it’s great! Other choices for permanent ink are Platinum Carbon Ink. Diamine Document ink is also an amazing blue black that turns a bit darker with age.
Love color exploration and this template tool for organization of color studies. Excellent adjunct and presentation of its use. TY
Thank you Eileen and Maria, I plan to clean and fill my pens today. What a great motivational video. Yes to daily sketching.
Yep. Sketch everyday! Your work will evolve!
Tk you Art Toolkit for these inspiring videos. I’ve been a journal keeper all my life. My grown son gave me a fountain pen in 2016, and I went in a delightful rabbit hole I’m never coming out of. Recently I took a drawing class. And now I’m ready to combine fountain pens into sketching. Thank you for this video; the timing is perfect!
Excellent!
I'm left handed and find it's easier to work from the back to the front of my sketchbook as well as right to left on the pages. Thanks for such a terrific topic
Wooow❤❤❤
Great video. I started with an old fountain pen I had in a draw for years, once I cleaned it carefully. After using it for a while and doing some research, I then bought a Lamy medium nib fountain pen and then later the sailor fude 55° for the varied lines you can have with one pen. I bought their own converters, too. Recently, I got another Lamy with a different size nib (fine) plus a separate Extra Fine nib. You can buy different nibs separately, and they are easy to swap out. I found the Lamy a good entry-level fountain pen that suits me fine. I also have the platinum carbon ink, again after researching about it. It is still good to use water soluble ink sometimes in sketching as well and blending with a waterbrush. Although I do use fine liners, along with all kinds of materials, I do love sketching with a fountain pen. I've also got an art toolkit pocket size palette I got through Rosemary and Co. along with one of their travel brushes. This video was great because a while ago, I did a lot of research, like I said, through many videos, that you have all in one video. All the best John, South of England
I’m relatively new to sketching but I started at the back and worked forward to avoid that blank first page.
hello- id like to order the standard palette - will this fit 14 standard pans?
Hi Maria! Thanks so much for this quaint video. I wish you and your team a beautiful 2025.
Found that wonderful book "Ish" is read out loud on TH-cam. Saw you both at SketchFest. In fact, I signed up for Genine's class knowing nothing about her and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
I neglected to condition my magnet and when I tried to remove the pans, they ripped the magnet. Is there a way to replace the magnet, I wonder?
So it would work well to put various triads with their related hues in different tins?
Can i use the parallel’s cartriges into the kakuno?
I really enjoyed the video and I always enjoy Romey’s art and tutorials
Thank you! It was a treat to have him back for a demo; we couldn't agree more!
Fun video! Totally agree about having a number of palettes! They are small, portable and super convenient. Buy more Art toolkit palettes.

Hi from Australia. I’m brand new to watercolour & I love this idea of working on a smaller scale…much less intimidating. Thank you for the step by step, easy to follow tutorial. Love the ‘Paint it forward’ philosophy 😊
Smaller scale just feels so much easier to start, you know? Welcome to watercolor painting, we're so glad you are inspired! <3

I use one of these clear plastic, deep containers with a silicone liner. It never has gotten moldy. It also stays pretty wet.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing your experience and tools!
Use distilled water and that helps keep mold away!
I add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to my mister before closing acrylic, watercolor, or gouache boxes... have never had a mold problem even after months, and I live in SW Florida! Enjoyed this, Jared. Thanks Art Toolkit!
These are great tips! Thank you for sharing!
What a happy surprise for today.
We love happy surprises!!
