Why do I stutter less with friends and family and why are we less confident
I am answering to the comment:
Thanks for the useful tips. I am able to speak normally with less stammering with my friends and family but when I get out from my comfort zone, before speak with any strangers, i get fear and anxious and I stuck in the first word. 😢 and can’t complete my sentence. I always think about the issues in my mind that, if I get blockage in-front of people, what they think about me. 😢
Also, here i started speaking about my next chapter Confidence. Very important topic. I am recommending to take a look. Confidence is a big thing and it goes even beyond stuttering.

I wonder if you ever get non-stutterers (like me) who do have other speaking function issues.. I finally figured out I don't speak on the exhale and searched and found your lovely explanation. I also read this article from Harvard Biz on speaking "on the breath" (the exhale) with a great analysis of that and an exercise to practice, but like you said, it's just about remembering to do it lol trusting the process as they say..

I am 71 years old, and have stuttered since early childhood. Based on my own experience and a large amount of reading about stuttering over the years, I would say three things: In many instances, children who begin stuttering in early childhood (age 4), for reasons not fully understood by experts in this field, will permanently cease stuttering without any type of speech therapy. In my opinion, it depends in part on the parenting abilities of the parents, the degree to which they have educated themselves about raising children who stutter, overall conditions within the home, bullying at school, and the severity of the biological basis of the child’s stuttering. If your child’s stuttering does not improve and becomes a problem, I recommend speech therapy. But not just “speech therapy”, get speech therapy DESIGNED FOR STUTTERING. If that is not effective, I recommend further intervention of some type; perhaps family counseling or psychological counseling of the child that is focused on the “entire child”, not the stuttering. If a person has stuttered since early childhood and still does by his early 20’s, the continued stuttering may have caused mental health disorders. No type of speech therapy will be effective until those disorders have been adequately addressed. The disorders may be depression, PTSD, generalized anxiety, or some type of personality disorder regarding having normal relationships with other people. If so, he needs help from a psychologist or even a psychiatrist. In either case, try to find one who has patients who stutter. I know from personal experience that medications can help a great deal. In the case of PTSD and generalized anxiety, I recommend Paxil. I STRONGLY recommend that the person seek that help NOW. The older he gets, the more emotional damage he will have incurred, and the more damage he will have done to his life. I will offer some free psychological help to a stutterer: • Like yourself. But before you can do that, you must accept yourself. Recognize that as a person, you are probably no worse or better than the average person. Indeed, you may be better, in that you will have developed greater compassion for people than you would have had otherwise. • Read books on how to build and reinforce self-esteem, and implement those steps in your life where feasible. • Step out of your comfort zone and make friends. • Find an activity in which you help other people in some way. • Exercise. If you do so by walking, I recommend using a treadmill or grass, because it places much less impact on your knees than pavement. • For some people (including me), working on becoming fluent/articulate in writing also improves their speech. • Find physical relaxation techniques that help your stuttering. This is advice from someone who “has been there”, and for a long time. No bs.

@3stuttersteps, I have a question about the technique: when you say "you have to do it every time" do you mean every time you stutter, or every time you speak? And if the latter: do I have to take a conscious breath before every sentence or every word?

If I understand you correctly, I need to make a habit of breathing fully. Being full of air even when I don’t need it, in that way I would position myself to be ready to speak _anytime_

    • @3stuttersteps

Right, but you need to acquire the new habit, you cannot just tell yourself to do it right away. You need to be aware of that but practice the 3 steps to get there. I am explaining about it in my last video. I think to understand it is very important, so you can use it right away
