Zachary Drummer Boy 10 Drum Rhythm Machine
This drum machine recently joined my studio-before purchasing I was unable to find any information about it online (aside from eBay auctions) and am excited to share the wonders of this little jem with The Internet.
It's a light, plasticy build but sounds surprisingly crisp. The circuit board has pots to adjust the overall gain and noise on the snare (from none-making it sound more like a blip/tom-to a hissy mess).
As with most (all?) pushbutton rhythm machines, two/three/etc. rhythms can be selected at once.
This style of machine was made to be mounted underneath an organ (four screw holes are present on the top of the machine). Two short screws (also on the top) open up the case.
The Drummer Boy The front panel is a paper sticker-in roughly 30 minutes of recording I managed to do more damage to the machine than the last 30 years. If you find one, be warned...
The case is a flexible plastic-I don't imagine it would take too much abuse before breaking.
Compared to the Seeburg Rhythm Prince (which I've also recently received and posted a video for) the Drummer Boy feels cheap and poorly made. Sometimes, though, that's exactly what a person is looking for.
And warnings-*never play with the internals of machines that are plugged in to an outlet. I'm using a metal screwdriver in the video-this should have been plastic. Anything plugged in to mains power, as far as the internals are concerned, should be treated with respect and caution. Small slips can have major consequences.

Seeburg Rhythm Prince Analog Drum Machine

This drum machine recently joined my studio-the analog sounds are great but I LOVE the mechanical triggering. More to come later (fuller coverage of each rhythm, primarily) but I had to grab some footage and add my share of information about this little Prince with The Internet.

I pulled into the driveway after a weekend away from town and found this little guy in the street in front of our house, being taunted by neighborhood birds; I hopped out of the Jeep to see if he was injured when he flew up to our flower boxes. I had about five min. with him and shot this video. Video/Music by the majestic Moog MG1.

    Great piece of gear! I absolutely love the sound it produces! The amount of manual work that went into producing this 60s beauty is heart warming. Very rare, yet not over the top expensive for what I found. No midi-upgrade kits availabe though LOL.

    I bought one of these on eBay, connected the outputs to an RCA cable, and... nothing. It came in a sealed box, never been used. There are no lights on this or any indication that it would even be on, except for the sound-which I'm not getting. How did you connect your audio out? Any idea why this wouldn't generate sound?

    • @synthrovert
      @synthrovert ปีที่แล้ว

      Contrats on the NIB find! I've fired up my unit tonight to have a look - if it's any consolation, it was temperamental as well, but I was able to get it up and running and have a couple of observations that might help: (1) Unfortunately (as you noted) there's no indicator light on either the box or circuit board to indicate anything's happening inside. (2) It took roughly 10m of plugging in/unplugging before I was able to successfully use the machine. Until then, I'd periodically get short bursts (up to 1-4 measures), but after enough power cycles it started behaving well (and has been up and running for roughly 15m now without a hiccup). (3) The trimpot next to the power in/audio out on the circuit board affects audio out and may be worth looking at if power cycling doesn't do the trick. Additionally, my "volume" slider has become quite stiff after sitting unused - the cap also rubs against and removes small bits of the paper background if I'm not careful. (4) My unit has a 1/4 mono plug - entirely possible that this isn't original and should be RCA as yours. No preamplifier was needed (I couldn't recall if I used one in the video, but I don't believe so) and the signal is strong enough to run straight in to a mixing desk. I hope this helps - good luck!

    How are the actual sounds produced? Can't imagine they're pre-recorded? Dedicated analog synthesizers for each drum?

    • @synthrovert
      @synthrovert 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly - the machine is early enough (mid '60s) to predate ROM/RAM, each of the voices is discrete circuitry (behind the "button" panel, which I don't believe I explored when I had this open).
