Self Driving Car Learns to Drive
This video shows how a neural network can learn to navigate a track. There is a generation counter in the upper right. Each car that sets out to learn receives the same input signals to be able to make decisions. For each new generation, ten cars become modeled after the best performing car of the prior generation. What constitutes "best performing" can be dialed in and modified, but for the most part, it is based on how long a car survives without crashing and how far it has gotten along the track.
It isn't until the 30th generation that the AI learns to navigate the first right turn successfully. In the 33rd generation, the AI learns how to navigate the second turn. By the 46th generation, the AI is able to navigate multiple turns but the driving is quite slow with noticeable speed differences between the right and left turns. From this point forward, it gradually learns to go faster and faster.
The light green color car represents the best performing car from the prior generation. In many cases, this car will be the fastest of the current generation, but when you see an orange car beat the green car, it is because some randomness has resulted in a better performing car that allows it to outpace the best car from a prior generation.
Once the car learns to navigate a track, we change tracks to see if the trained cars are able to navigate a never-before-seen track.
There is a recap at the end of the video that shows key milestones of learning and performance improvement in the 70 generations captured in this video.
This program was developed by my son, Nathan, during his junior year of high school for fun.
0:00 - Generation 1 - learning begins but no cars survive first turn
1:13 - Generation 30 - successfully navigates first turn
1:20 - Generation 33 - successfully navigates second turn
2:15 - Generation 46 - multiple turns made successfully but car is SLOW.

Tony and Vinnie Enjoy a Springtime Splash

Most of the snow has melted but we still have a layer of ice on a good part of the pond. Today, Tony and Vinnie have been wandering around looking for little pools of water here and there to get their bills wet.
A Japanese-Style Scarf Joint - Kanawa Tsugi
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm not gonna lie. This is going to be a long, boring video of me hacking away at a piece of wood. This is my first time cutting a scarf joint so I thought I would film the process. I had to replace a rotten beam under my house and the only way to fit it in was to cut it into two pieces and assemble it in place. This video starts with a few seconds showing the test fit. The remainder of the vid...

Perhaps because of the very dry summer we have had here in southern Vermont, we had some early fall colors this year in the maple trees so I took some shots around the yard to share what we were seeing.

Build a Picnic Table from a Fallen Tree - DIY
มุมมอง 9394 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, we build a picnic table from an eastern hemlock tree that had fallen over in the forest. We retrieve the logs, mill the lumber, and build the table. Oh, we also build a log arch in this video to help with our log retrievals. The table is largely based on the one built by Tom Silva on This Old House. That video can be found here: th-cam.com/video/nyB8mFXZdEI/w-d-xo.html 0:00 - Int...

Growing Korean Vegetables in our Garden - 우리 정원에
มุมมอง 14K4 ปีที่แล้ว
We love Korean food! Unfortunately, we live really far from any restaurants that serve authentic Korean food so we decided to grow our own Korean vegetables. Come along as I give a quick tour of the Korean vegetables we are growing in our garden. We are not expert gardeners, but we are trying to learn with each step we take. Hopefully, we will get a few harvests that we can enjoy throughout the...
We Got New Chickens and We Build a New Coop and Run
มุมมอง 444 ปีที่แล้ว
We got five new chicks! They are super cute, but they are growing up fast so we have to build a new coop out of our old shed because they are too little to mix in with our older hens. We also build a new chicken run to give the little chicks a place to be outside but safe from predators.
Our Drive Home in Summer
มุมมอง 664 ปีที่แล้ว
Here is a quick video for anyone who lives in a big city who might be curious what it is like to drive home when you live on a dirt road in the outskirts of a small town. This drive looks very different at different times of the year so maybe I'll post a couple more when I get footage from fall, winter and spring. There was a lot of wind noise on the actual camera footage so I simply turned off...
Unloading the Cub Cadet 125

Dealing with Some Leaning Trees
มุมมอง 1624 ปีที่แล้ว
Today, I deal with four leaning trees that are near the forest path. Although I'm slowing gaining experience with the chainsaw and felling trees, I am nowhere near an expert. Please do not consider anything that I am sharing as advice or instructions on how to deal with dangerous tree situations. If you are unsure, please consult an expert. The only thing I can recommend is that you watch some ...
