I spent a year or so playing with pentominos after reading about them in a novel. I can't remember which one, it was so long ago, but it was an integral part of the plot.

63 that's the most coherent solution : The idea of a pentomino existing only on certains grids break the basic principle of categorisation. Not considering different orientation of a pentomino but considering same shapes formed by différents pentomino as différent solution isn't coherent.

I didn’t care about pentominoes before watching this video. I now care deeply about pentominoes.

I would say either have the meaning of a distinct solution be __either__ one grid of filled in squares that produces the longest path and whose filled in squares could be filled by nonoverlapping pentominoes (this would undercount even previous euclidean 2d solutions i think), OR have a solution be a grid of pentominoes that fulfils all the conditions and where, if you outlined all pentominos (or connected the centers of cells covered by the same pentomino) it would be distinct from all other solutions (essentially, in order to transform it into a different solution you would have to translate a pentomino or rotate it in a way that it is not symmetric.) which i think is the 63 option. Edit: I am an idiot, the second option has a much easier explaination: each pentomino is the grid is a unique color, even pentominos of the same type. Edit again: Wait no then you could swap any two pentominos of the same type for another unique solution, nevermind

For a while in high school i was obsessed with fitting pentominoes (specifically including their mirrors too) into large rectangles. After succeeding a couple times, I eventually tried the same with hexominoes and heptonimoes but to no avail, they’re so much harder to work with the further you increase cell count
